Error Code -402653077 and -402653...from OS 4.0 update on 3G PLEASE ANSWER

so it seems I too have joined the ranks of non-working iPhone 3G members. Im sooooo mad because no one from Apple has responded, put an URGENT message anywhere.
-402653077 is the second error I got, the first was something like -4026530.....
Has ANYONE been able to use the DFU setting to restore. I can't even do this. The only thing that does work is turning the phone off holding the two buttons down for over 15 secs. Odd the website says do not disconnect your phone while updating but in my situation iTunes stopped syncing.
Now as i sit here and type iTunes tries to sync the update on the loading screen that only shows the apple icon and the progress bar. (Black background)

Whats up everyone I too have had the same problem! This is what happen. I downloaded the new version of iTunes 9.2 and installed it on my Mac. Then downloaded ios 4 to upgrade my 3G. What a problem that was. My 3G acted the same as everyone else, stuck in reboot but I let it stay that way for 8 hours thinking it was just slow. Now before I did this I spoke to a Apple support rep and he tried to help me. Once it started syncing he got off the line and I thought everything was ok! Wrong!!! This is where the 8 hours came in, I let it set overnight. Next morning same problem. Now I called another Apple rep and he suggested I try another computer to restore it on and then come back to my Mac to restore from backup. First I had to put my 3G in restore mode. This was done by shutting the phone off, holding down the home button (circle button on 3G) and placing it on a charger connected by USB. This will bring up the restore screen on iTunes. Well the other computer did restore it back to factory settings but all my info was still missing. I didn't want to do a backup restore because I knew what the outcome would be. I decided to try just sync. I tried that and it worked. I selected all the info I wanted back on my phone and sync put it there. The only thing I am missing now is the notes. So after all that trial and errors my phone is back working!!!

I have the same looping error. I did do the DFU thing suggested. I was able to "restore iPhone" but as soon as the itunes paged opened and I went to restore it back to my stuff (I picked an earlier date to restore it to) it did the whole thing again with the looping. I've been at it for six hours now and it's almost 3 in the morning. I need my phone to work. My honey is battling cancer and undergoing treatments. I need to be able to use my phone for emergencies! This is frustrating! I had the same error code 402653077 when it first happened. Now, continuous looping!

Hi everyone. I managed to battle my way into making iOS4 work on my 3G last night. It was a lengthy and tedious process, but I managed in the end with a little workaround to turn my "paper-weight" back into an iPhone again!

I had loads of sync and restore errors with the update so married up some tips I'd read with some of my own knowledge.

If you get to where I was - Apple logo...loading bar...ERROR...Apple logo...loading bar...ERROR... I suggest the following as a workaround until 4.0.1 is released:

- Open iTunes
- Connect your iPhone with the USB cable
- Battle away until all error messages subside or until you can DFU (see next step)
- DFU the phone:
- Switch off your iPhone by holding HOME & POWER buttons together
- When Apple logo appears release POWER and continue to hold HOME
- When iTunes message "iTunes discovered a device in Recovery Mode", release HOME.
- Perform a manual override Restore by holding ALT/OPTION and clicking Restore
- Navigate and select the recently downloaded iOS4. (This will be in Macintosh HD/Users/~YourUserName/Library/ iTunes/iPhone Software Updates/iPhone1,2 4.0_8A293Restore.ipsw)
- Allow the device to reinstall the firmware. iTunes will then access the iPhone database to verify and activate your phone.

Now you are presented with options: Restore from an old backup / Setup as new device. Select restore to try and preserve as much of your iPhone as possible.

However, if like me you get stuck, repeat the above 3 times trying to restore from old backups with continual problems, "Setup as new device". I lost my camera roll images and all my SMS/MMS messages, but as I use SMTP mail and sync with iTunes, I found alot of my sync settings were easy to setup to put all my iTunes, Apps and Acccounts (iCal/Mail/Contacts) back on by syncing. A small price to pay for making my paper-weight a phone again!

From your manual override Restore, you may be able to select the iPhone1,2 3.X.X_7B367Restore.ipsw version for your old OS 3.X version although mine was corrupted and I had no option but to install the iOS4 firmware.

Good luck.

This happened to me twice today when trying to update, here's the way I got it to work and it doesn't require anything complicated:
1) plug your phone into the computer like normal and click on it under devices
2) hit SYNC in the bottom right hand corner of the screen
3) when it says it's finally done click it again just to double check it really worked
4) re-attempt to update your phone and it should work this time 🙂

have followed instructions here
http://www.maclife.com/article/howtos/downgradeiphone_os_40_beta_back_iphone_os313
to downgrade to 3.1.3,

had to download libusb from here http://www.ellert.se/twain-sane/ as the version on the page above is only for snow-leopard and i'm using leopard.

UPDATE:

Seem to have a happy iPhone again. almost a whole day of my time wasted whilst I've been incommunicado.

Confirmed. This method worked for me. Before that I was getting -40something errors during backup before update.

I did two consecutive Syncs, one by one, and then tapped update.

I took terribly long to process, about 40-50 minutes whole thing, but my iPhone 3G is now running OS4.

Ah, be sure to have GOOD iPhone connection with your Mac/PC. Good USB port, good cable. And first connect the iPhone let it settle down, then launch iTunes. I don't know if that ever matters but it's semms to be a "good practice" during any fail-conditions...

After my husband did the upgrade yesterday without a hitch, I decided to go for it this morning, well I was not so lucky. I spent an hour with AT&T support which took me to Apple support, which I can't believe they knew nothing of this problem and was not able to help me. Have an appt. with Apple store tomorrow, hopefully my backup will work. Read about DFU setting and will try it when I get home, anyone had any luck with this?

Lost all of my Pictures/Camera Rolls on my iPhone, but iTunes is saying that there are 500MB worth of pictures on my phone? Almost seems that 4.0 is looking in the wrong place for the pictures, but iTunes able to see everything on the phone.

Are there any tools out that allow browsing the 4.0 filesystem? I think Ill start looking for one today .. I need some of my pics back for work.
