iPhone 3G Home Screen Background

Yea, I can not load a background either must be one of the iOS 4 things the 3g does not have.

why?

I agree that this is a basic feature and really should've been included in the iOS4 update for the 3G. However, supposedly Steve Jobs sent an email to show that he disagrees.

Now, I personally think Apple was a bit lazy in their testing of iOS4 on iPhone 3G. Mine's been slower overall, and I can't listen to music through the iPod and browse Safari without the music skipping anymore. On top of this, leaving out "easy" features like orientation lock and background images prove to me that they pushed this out for basic security fixes and marketing, while not really caring about putting in the extra effort for a polished release on the 3G. But that's just my opinion.

I know it's funny how this is suppose to be such a techy phone but doesn't have some of the simplest features available but yet available on the "newer" phones. LoL

Simply put, the 3G doesnt have the required resources to run a wallpaper on the homscreen. How do I know? I tried it by 'doing something' to my phone which enabled the homescreen wallpaper on my 3G. Doing so made my phone very sluggish and caused alot of apps and even simple tasks to freeze up.

well can some one explain to me how a jail broken phone can do all these things?

Why is it I can down load an app that lets me take Videos, and it runs fine, yet Apple cant enable this as standard feature on the Iphone?

Apple can do it. And did. But they didn't like how it performed. At that point, they could either spend more developer time (and associated costs) optimizing the code to get it to perform to their standards or they could disable the feature.

Based on Steve Jobs' comment, they decided to disable the feature after performing that cost-benefit analysis.

So, why can jailbreakers do it? Because they devote their own time to that feature. And according to my friends who have jailbroken, they do it with less quality than Apple would demand before including it in a general release.

If Apple had unlimited time and budget, and (most importantly) if Steve Jobs wanted to make it happen, Apple could make this happen. But meanwhile, in Apple's collective opinion, it wasn't worth the time and effort to make it happen.

Im not 100% certain on jail broken Iphones, but if its allowing me for freedom and with the state I am in now, I might look that way

Mine is doing the same thing...It's because 4.0 has to be using more ram for some reason...I have an app called System Activity Monitor which tells you how much ram your using and it can also free up ram with the press of a button...i've noticed that i have a lot less free ram available since the upgrade and if i go to free up ram, it can't...That would explain the slowness and skipping...

In general, all software releases will use more RAM than the earlier version due to feature bloat unless you make a conscious (and typically costly) effort to optimize code and use less memory.

This isn't a big problem for the 3GS, since it has 256MB of RAM compared to the 3G's 128MB, and I've seen several sources say the iPhone 4 has 512MB of RAM to handle the load due to the video features.

For the 3G though, between the lower RAM and the slower processor, I think Apple would've been wise to move the 3G and the original iPhone onto a maintenance only release that could remain optimized for lower RAM, while the 3GS got the full iOS4 release.

Then again, from a marketing perspective, it would've looked bad to drop the 3G onto maintenance only releases after ONLY two years. In my perspective though, that's still more feature enhancements and release improvements than other smartphones, although the other thing they'd need to balance (and probably drove them to do this update) would be losing support for Apps that rely on the iOS4 SDK that would no longer be compatible with the 3G.

I realized that I am eligible to upgrade to iPhone 4 from 3G even my contract still remains more than 1 year. I think Apple is willing to replace all non multi-tasking iPhones (3G and original)?
