Phone froze during IOS4 update

HELP!!! Have a 3GS, during the new OS update, it froze!! and my iphone now has the picture of a USB cable and Itunes disc on the screen....keeps telling me i need to restore. i click ok to restore and the status bar moves a about a 1/4 of the way and stops. NOW WHAT?

Same issue here... but not even a note saying restore.. just frozen and computer doesn't recognize it any longer.. I can power down, but when back up, same pic of usb cable to itunes logo. Shoot itunes... proprietary POS.

tell me about it...what makes it worse is , I updated my 3GS, without a hitch. I went to update my wifes 3GS and i have this problem. I am ready to throw in the towel for tonight. this blows...I don't get how this can happen from one phone to the next. I am disappointed to say the least. I will keep reading the threads in the support forums for help. tks

Having this exact problem as well. Have left it running while I'm at work in the hopes that it will somehow go through, am not very hopeful though. If anyone has managed to solve this problem, I would appreciate an explanation of how to do it.

Same issue here. Finally downloaded the new iOS last night. Installed it and it was taking forever. Went to bed, it was still froze when I woke up. Rebooted phone and iTunes, now it's stuck in restore mode. I've tried restoring it three times, keeps freezing a 1/4 way through.

Same here. Update froze around 3/4 into the upgrade. Restarted, reconnected, downloaded the update file again, etc, no dice. Freezes same place every time. Now I have a dead phone 😟
Any ideas how to get the original back?

I had the same issues. Try and delete the update from last night. goto C:\Users\Alex\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Software Updates and delete all the files in the folder.

Then connecte the iphone back to the main computer and try again. That did it for me, after. Trying uninstall and reinstall itunes and trying on another pc.

Thanks for the quick response.
I finally got it to work: re-installed iTunes, rebooted. No change.
Downloaded the update again (by deleting the previous one), re-install and it worked!. This was the third download and all downloaded files have exactly the same size, up to the last byte (so perhaps there is lame bit somewhere in the file: don't they have a check-sum?)
But whatever, I have my phone again!

After more than 15 hours that my phone frozen what i do was to unplug from the computer, then i reboot the phone (after this my phone keep telling me just for emergency) then I quit itunes and star agin itunes. The I connect the phone, I wait for 5 minutes and my phone works... But i loose all i have on it. But it doesn't matter because i have all the information on my mac.
