Got Edge and 3G data working in iOS4 - Temp workaround!

Disclaimer
*The solution provided below is on your own risk, not from apple support. make sure you follow steps, and don't add/change other info unless you know what you are doing.*

*OK, got edge and 3g working on my 3gs with os4.0 working without having to reset my phone!* But its a bit tricky! Beginners are not advised to do this themselves without help!

Background:
For some reason, probably "bug" iOS4 removes the APN settings, as so many of you already figured out. With the help of iPhone Configuration Utility, you can see in your Console log(phone has to be attached:
Tue Jun 22 12:18:23 unknown CommCenter[32] <Notice>: SIM never inserted so no settings
Tue Jun 22 12:18:23 unknown CommCenter[32] <Notice>: Invalid PDP Context -1 specified

Which means that SIM card don't have the necessary info, and your Carrier is not sending out the info needed for the phone. Some Carriers has this info stored on SIM-card but its not very flexible.

*Temporary Solution but not recommended, do it on ur own risk:*
1. Download iPhone Configuration Utility : http://support.apple.com/kb/DL926

2. Google your Carriers APN settings or ask a non-iPhone user, normally
SonyEricsson phones has this stated in its conf-settings

3. Go to Library/Configuration Profiles, Click on "new", go down to advanced, add the APN settings, for example in Malaysia, use Access Point name "maxis" and password, "wap", rest not needed, at least not for Carrier Maxis

4. Connect your iphone, should pop up as in iTunes, go to "configuration profiles tab", chose install, a notification should appear on your phone, choose "install". After install it should work directly.

Troubleshooting:
1. Look in Devices/<phone>/Console for error messages.
2. In your Settings/General, you should now have a profile-tab, so you can choose to remove it if you experience any other problem and redo.

Good Luck!

You are definitely the man! This did fix my broken 3g problem. I knew it had something to do with corrupt or missing apn settings......It's too bad apple doesn't just let us modify these settings on our own. Visual voicemail still doesn't work though as the configuration utility doesn't let us modify those settings...

I don't understand why this works but when I reinstall the ATT_US.ipcc carrier file via iTunes it doesn't fix the problem? I've extracted it and looked at carrier.plist and the correct APN info is there but when I install it nothing happens....oh well, this should get me by until Apple issues a real fix...I'll just call in to voicemail for now. Thanks!

I HAVE SOLVED THIS!

Solved! I have completely fixed this problem without losing any data (not that i've noticed yet anyway).

First, let me summarize the problem and briefly address the known solutions. There are multiple issues people are having with the update that -HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH OUR PROBLEM-. Some people had theirs in airplane mode which apparently gives them a "no sim card" after update. *not our problem*. Some people can reset settings *not our problem*.

Our problem is corrupt APN settings after an upgrade, which can be worked around by installing mobileconfig updates or using the "iPhone Configuration Utility" to temporarily overwrite our APN settings. This is a temp fix that only makes 3g work, no MMS or Visual Voicemail.

We know that completely restoring the phone and setting it up as new resolves the problem. A lot of us are unable to restore any backups without re-introducing the bug. A lot of us do not want to lose our app data so setting up as new phone is out of the question. Some people have figured out how to set up as new phone and import SMS messages from corrupt backup to new backup. This is a good solution if SMS is the only thing you want…However, some of us want ALL our app data.

*Now for the solution!* First, go in to settings on your phone and uninstall any custom profile you may have installed to temporarily fix the APN.

Now, perform a full backup of your phone (you may want to delete your previous backups or move them out of the directory so that you're not confused with multiple backup files in your backup directory.

Go to your backup directory ~/Library/Application\ Support/MobileSync/Backup/random-backup-name-here/ and delete this file 8218978e4ab0a48035bb92653145a6be872ea858
That file contains our corrupted APN information.

Now *RESTORE YOUR PHONE* and restore the backup. It will fully restore and then give you an error, ignore the error, it worked. Sync your phone to get all your apps back. 3g works, visual voicemail works, mms works, and i have ALL of my app data! all my contacts, all my photos, all my sms messages! BAM! I RULE!

If for some reason you don't have that file in your backup directory (i have no idea, maybe they are named differently with different backups) you can find it by entering the backup directory in the terminal and running the following

for i in * ; do echo "checking $i" ; strings $i | grep -i com.apple ; done >> output.txt

open output.txt and search for CommCenter you'll see something like
checking 8218978e4ab0a48035bb92653145a6be872ea858
<string>com.apple.CommCenter</string>

The file above "<string>com.apple.CommCenter</string>" is the file you want to delete.

Thanks Silverfox. I have reenable my 3G network. Now left with MMS and voicemail which both I don't use.

Malaysia iPhone do not have the Cellular Network Settings to input MMS Settings. I come across this article which might help. I am lazy to try it as I do not use neither MMS or voicemail since they are way too expensive and age old technology. 3G is good enough as long as I can email and use Whatsapp. Cheers

I had this problem with my 3GS as well. One thing I wanted to point out, however, is that I just received my new iPhone 4 in the mail and upon update, it too is exhibiting the same inability to connect to data, visual voicemail, and MMS.

I just wanted to let you know that this problem seems to *continue even if you bring your backup to the new iPhone 4*... I hope they come out with a fix for this soon.

Was your iPhone jailbroken? If so - then they only people you will want to wait for a "fix" from are those that hack/make jailbreaks. If you were jailbroken, then your backup is of jailbroken data - and apparently there is something different in the coding with iOS4 that doesn't "upgrade" properly. I do not think it was a purposeful switch by Apple - just a byproduct of the iOS4 upgrading.
I'm doing the "Restore" - New iPhone. I'm not that worried about having to resetup things; all of my existing items that were configured in iTunes (songs, playlists, photos, notes, etc) will by sync'd the next time. Yes, you lose text messages, photos, video's & anything else that you had stored in the iPhone itself that isn't sync'd - but you can just copy that info ahead of time before doing the "Restore" - "New"...
