I've been able to downgrade my 3G back to 3.1.3 from 4.0 without any problems by following the directions here: to-ios-313

Working like a champ for me.

Yeah, that's what i'm going to have to do.

My phone is totally unusable with OS4... I've had a few phone calls that take so long to answer, the people who have called me end up hanging up before my frantic "hello?!"s can get through.

Maybe it's a ploy to get us to upgrade from our 3G phones to something more modern and expensive ...

i also have a problem with my iphone 3g after i upgraded it to iSO 4...i feel so bad when after this, my phone crushed...before, i am not experiencing a lag when my operation system was 3.1.5...but everything just caused me so much stress...i was expecting there could be a way apple company could help their customers who at first very impressed on how apple's iphones change the trend in cellphones...they cannot just say that because it's us who chose to upgrade our iphone 3gs to a better operation we are the ones who are to be held liable in what they have offered to be a better operations for our iphone 3gs....i think apple should be aware that customer's feedback is the thing that they based if the products they offer is at its quality...its a very bad reason that upgrading is customer's sole decision and held liable if something happened wrong...come on!!!! THE REASON WHY WE UPGRADED OUR IPHONE 3GS IS BECAUSE WE ARE RELYING WITH YOUR EXPERTISE ESPECIALLY IT IS YOU WHO KNOWS WELL ABOUT APPLE'S PRODUCTS....SO NEVER EXPECT US TO DECIDE ON THINGS THAT WE BELIEVE THAT YOU ARE EXPERT WITH....UPGRADING MEANS OFFERING A BETTER USAGE NOT A DOWNGRADED OPERATION!!!!DON'T EXPECT US TO MAKE A WAY OF BRINGING IT BACK TO HOW IT WAS YOU SHOULD TAKE THE WAY OF HELPING US MAKING IT OK AGAIN.....

Yup, i hear you all! Mine is dead slow, OS4 upgrade failed took 3.5 hours, finally out of the blue it started to restore... Hello, what type of developers create bad code for updates like this...I feel, thankful that it finally restored back everything but not the way it use to be. Camera is blurry now and really slow at taking photos. Email, bring back the old... who cares about the archive feature, I just want to delete not archive... Camera zoom, fat chance it only magnifies. yeah, why are apple products so popular, they crash harder then windows. Analogy: Apple = girl drinks; Windows = scotch...

I experience the same slow service with the "sticky" unlock. Also, the new OS 4 is not compatible with many iPOD/iPhone players! Not only will it not play on my Parrot 9200, but it will not even charge! Apple.....I am not happy.

Same problem: very slow, "lagy" apps after os4 upgrade on 3G (e.g. 5-20 second wait where response was usually almost instantaneous before). "Reset", as suggested by others, (versus off/on), improved immensely. Reset (hold down On/Off button and Home button simultaneously until it restarts).

I finished my upgrade to 4.0 yesterday. Some how and for some reason, the updated version of Itunes 9.2 un-checked the boxes for Outlook to be used for my Contacts and Calendar in Windows XP. My contacts were not there. Also the back-up restore does not keep track of your email account address settings, bookmarks, text messaging history or notes.

Itunes is supposed to be the "do-all" program, why doesn't it?

I know in the past previous versions of Itunes has backed up notes but in this time they were completely hosed. Not a big deal, but these aren't minor issues, they are rather major ones. Why don't they first fix what's wrong before making a new toy. Oh wait this is how the whole industry works. Wow you with new toys so you will forget all about the old unresolved bugs.

There is a little utility program to back up your text messaging. Unfortunately I didn't think to do it before I upgraded to O/S 4.0. It is called: Iphone SMS Export. I believe it is also supposed to be able to import messages back, but I was too tired to fiddle with yesterday after I upgraded. Almost everything is restored, with the exception of my text messaging history and bookmarks. Annoying but I guess I'll live!

After simpy installing IOS4 in my running (non jail-broken)3.1.3 I had a lot of problems, especially the already known "crashing settings", that is extremely annoying considering Apples advice to software developers to collect there the preferences of their apps.
After trying this and that, I decided to wipe out all the data ('restore') and doing by that a fresh install, knowing that by avoiding the reinstall of my backup data I would erase forever my SMS because iTunes doesn't deliver a method to sync them with the backup data as it does with contacts or calendar.
Now it runs - well... a short time... but settings are crashing as before, eventually crashing all the phone, and certain other apps[1] do the same as well.
Waiting for a fix - and then downgrading to 3.1.3

    A shame!

[1] I should add that the number of my installed apps is around 300. I think Apple didn't test against this situation.
