    @goody2b
My 3GS was out of warranty at the end of June. I have a genius bar appointment at lakeside store on Sunday. The law provides protection for people even after the warranty period if the product is plainly unfit for purpose. Will report back how I got on, here and at www.ios4rum.com
Will show this thread to genius and see what happens

I'm going to Japan today which only uses the 3G network so I'll be keen to see how the phone reacts to this.

I'll report back, although I can't afford to actually make a call from this Country, too **** expensive!

Well it only gets worse! Today my iPhone rebooted when I was reading my mail! Opened my mail and about 10 seconds after that it rebooted!

One common reason for electronics reboots, is overheating.
If that is the case, then the iPhone clearly has a problem.

a new phone is on its way from apple. Cant fault them on that service.

Now just wondering what software will be on it.

I think you are right! I allso think it is rebooting due to overheating. Every time my phone reboots it is warm/hot. The question is what is OS 4 doing to overheat it? I am not running any programs at once.

    little update here for all....

i spoke to Apple support yesterday who put me onto a senior advisor. He seemed to genuinely be unaware of the problem. He was extremely helpful and was very keen to learn about the issue, as i pointed out this thread to him and he became aware this wasnt an isolated incident, and one that was affecting many many people. He basically wanted to solve the issue properly by finding the glitch and putting it right.

We started trying to get the logs from my phone so he could analyse them but lack of the right system at my work meant this couldnt be finished so I intend to finsih this at home tonight, and at this point we should know more....

Has anyone tried iOS 4.1 (Beta2) that was released yesterday?

We are really looking for some feedbacks about iOS 4.1 (beta2).

After much delay UPS finally came yesterday to collect my iPhone which is now on the way from Ireland to the UK. I was told it will be 5-7 days before I get my new iPhone. I was also told that if I paid €60 I could get it quicker, which didn't impress me as the phone is under warranty.

"The question is what is OS 4 doing to overheat it? I am not running any programs at once."

It's connected to the network, so if the signal is poor it will need to push more power through the RF amplifiers to stay in touch with the cellular network. Same is true if you are using WiFi and the signal is poor.

My reboots mainly happen during calls, but I have had one or two for no reason at all, that is prior to moving up to 4.01.

    Hi Evertype,

I can empathise with the extra cost they suggested -- I'm literally mulling it over now following a call with AppleCare earlier today. I wanted to discuss the options I had available.

If I pay £30 then a courier will deliver a replacement 3GS and at the same time take away mine -- but the new one will be a refurbished unit. I really don't like the thought of paying more money to get something that's not new, especially as I only got my 3GS in March and it was fine until iOS4 came along. I was told however that the replacement would be preloaded with iOS4.

If I don't pay £30 then a courier will take my 3GS away and then I have to wait whilst it's being tested etc, whereby I may still get issued with a refurb'd 3GS. Alternatively I can spend money on fuel and car parking so I can go Genius and do it face-to-face.

Or I could just wait for Apple to acknowledge there's a problem and get it addressed correctly via another update. I asked the enginer if he was aware of the reboot problem -- he said Apple were only aware of the iPhone 4 issues.

Well, that wasn't quite my experience. First, Apple said Thursday that UPS would collect it on Friday. They didn't. Late Monday I rang Apple to find out where UPS was. Then Tuesday (yesterday) my UPS guy turned up but UPS hadn't given him a container or a tracking number. He went off to do some more deliveries and to call the UPS office. I rang Apple. This particular agent wasn't very helpful. He went on about how I could purchase Advance Repair (I think he called it) which was basically 2 years of AppleCare for my phone, which I am not sure I want because I may wish to upgrade to an iPhone 4 after November. But he wouldn't get to the point about how much it would cost, and by this time the UPS guy turned up with a tracking number. So now I try to get the Apple guy to actually say how much it will be (he kept citing pounds though I kept saying euros), and then also said that the UPS guy would have to go away and then in a few days the UPS guy would come back.

So I gave it to the UPS guy even though the Apple guy said that it would take 5-7 days when the first Apple guy had tole me it would be 3 days to get my new phone.

At no point did the Apple guy say that I would be getting a refurb. In fact he kept saying "repair" over and over again, and I had to keep saying "replace" had been agreed.

I am now using a borrowed Nokia 3210. Gods help me.

    My update:
My 3GS 16GB was reseting like crazy all the time , wile calling , surfing the web, or checking the weather app.

What I did is reinstall from the backup of iOS4.0 switched off 3g, turned off the brightness sensor, got rid of most non iOS 4 apps and now for about 2 weeks it is fine. Hadn't made any long calls thou...
What i thought also might have been a problem is that it started after I used a 3rd party USB car charger.

Now I updated to 4.0.1 still no reset. Go figure !

Very good point here actually. It may well be that the code Apple have screwed-up in iOS4 is somehow unable to connect as well to the cellular/3G/WiFi connection so the phone is pushing more power through to try and compensate thus heating the device up more than normal. If that's the case it explains the mix of complaints regarding signal and rebooting devices.

Fingers crossed Apple will take their fingers out of their ears and start acknowledging and sorting out these issues.
