iOS4 update - now iPhone now reboots during phone call

After about 4 or 5 mins in a phone call my iPhone 3GS reboots itself for no apparent reason. this did not happen before I put the iOS4 update on it. Is the some way I can stop this happening, or revert back to the previous version?

I have the same problem. After few minutes of call, Iphone drops call and freezes with Apple logo on black screen and then after 2 minutes I get normal locked screen.
Hope they fix this problem ASAP.

I had also problem with, with 3rd apps not starting (closing after 1 second), but I hope, I found solution for that problem.

I submitted the bug on bugreport.apple.com and got a reply a few hours later with instructions how to log the phone.
For someone who get's the rebooting on every call, could you download iPhone Configuration Utility from http://www.apple.com/support/iphone/enterprise/ go to the Console tab in the program, and make a call followed by a reboot.
Then save the log and submit it to Apple so that we can sort this out ASAP!
I'm logging my calls from now on 🙂

WOW, surely with this many complaints there would be some Apple acknowledgement!

If these discussions and forums are not the way to go to get any attention from Apple, what is...? What are our options...petitions? media?

Call Apple support or visit a Genius Bar. This is Apple's primary source of information on problems. Every case is recorded and analyzed. The forums are for peer support, not technical support directly from Apple.
Actually, why it is so hard to find a common email address to send Apple for complaints and support if these forums don't do anything? Is there one one can we all use? Does anyone know? It is not just this forum listing the same IOS4 Update issue, many others are saying nearly the same thing, and I am sure that many are not even using these forum....What ever we do needs to be electronic... As we are spread all around the world, and many of us a long way away from personal Apple Support and Genius Bars. Only America and Canada can use the phone support.

http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html
Many other countries have Apple phone support. Admittedly, not all.
It seems a quick solution is to allow a downgrade or a longer solution a patch...but maybe Apple just does not realise how many of us are affected as there is actually no formal way our complaints are collectively being recorded. Even for the ones who can just drop into a Genius Bar, it amazes me that many of the Geniuses seem surprised that there is a problem and treat is individually and not an an epidemic. Do they not talk to each other...?

Well, that may indicate that it is NOT an epidemic, that it affects only a small number of the 100 million iPhones. (I'm not saying it shouldn't be fixed, but if it is a small number proportionally it is very difficult to diagnose, and you can't fix it until you diagnose it).

1. Calling is only an option if you are in the US or Canada
2. Genius Bar - this assumes that you have an Apple Store nearby. For me, the closest one is in Paris which is 4 hours away.

I have also posted the call / reboot problem on the feedback link http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html

I have also attempted to post it on the Apple bug report link - but it was rejected!

As far as i can see, your diagnosis maybe correct as it seems to fit what i have seen :
- Poor signal means higher demand on battery, means increase in battery temp.
- From the crash log and console logs that i have been able to capture, the reboot seems to be due to the battery temp not being reported back fast enough, and as the last known value is either high (or unknown in one case), the default solution is shutdown / reboot.
- This is obviously an iOS4 programming issue, as this never happened with 3.1.3, and MAY be related to multitasking slowing the response of the battery temp monitor - although i have had it reboot during a call with no other apps running.
- And i have had it happen when the phone was on the table and i was using the wired headset, so no additional heat from my hand or face.

I would certainly support a poll of users to see how widespread this problem is.

Thank you Lawrence for the feedback link:

http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html

I have registered this bug in the iOS 4 Upgrade for many 3GS iphones. I have already done all what support has said to do and still have exactly the same issue. I still would like to be part of a more formal way to see this diagnosed as a specific issue and get a fix. I would like to feel like something is actually happening, being acknowledged from Apple. I have spent so much time reading threads since the upgrade, it really seems like a lot of people are affected, even if it seems small in regard to 100 million phones.

I, like others, am still without an iphone and can't seem to think there is any light at the end of the tunnel.

This is what I indicated before: we need a formal co-ordinated poll that builds accurate numbers of those with this IOS 4 bug. So you don't go down to Apple Support and get told "that 22 pages of an apple discussion forum is no proof that a problem exists and there's not any central apple message to stores establishing 3GS phones upgrading to iOS4 having any issues."

(And this is just one just one discussion, many others were saying the same thing)

An official poll provide better ammo, something we can all use to say this is serious and affecting many others. Maybe it is an "epidemic" +defined as an occurrence of a disease or disorder in a population at a frequency higher than that expected in a given time period+ ... how do we know? How would Apple Support know if these 22 pages does not viewed or used by them, as Laurence said this is just used for peers and not used by Apple Support to diagnose and troubleshoot.)

This is what Apple takes note of -

You going to an Apple retail store and *get them* to give formal apple feedback, registering at an Apple Support Centre, Calling on the Support line or using these links:

http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html (thanks Lawrence)

https://bugreport.apple.com/ (Thanks sebamattsson)

http://www.apple.com/support/iphone/enterprise/ (For someone who get's the rebooting on every call use this iPhone Configuration Utility and go to the Console tab in the program, and make a call followed by a reboot. Then save the log and submit it to Apple.

Still it is interesting to know how many users of this thread have affected phones ... do you know...?Some good data still can be gleaned from this Discussion to be used elswhere for support.

Thanks 4 the link - here's what I wrote them:

+Hallo Apple-Support,+
+since I updated my IPhone from IOS3.1.3 to IOS4 I am having a serious problem with my device. It reboots while I am calling someone! Mostly after 5 to 15 minutes the calls are interrupted and my device is just showing the apple-sign. I've never had any problems while working with OS3.1.x but now I can't use my IPHONE as a PHONE anymore... I patiently waited for OS4.0.1 hoping this will fix it but there wasn't any improvement. This week I called Apple-Customer-Support (Germany) several times and was told to make a clean restart / to restore it / to set it up as a new iphone / to use another pc and another itunes... nothing worked! Even with a blank IPhone my calls were dropped!! This is very annoying because this is a mobile phone and I expect it at least to be able to make calls!!+

+For your information: I am NOT THE ONLY ONE suffering under this serious problem with the 3gs (please visit this link to your discussion forum http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2471090 and you will see that there are a lot of cases! And there are a lot more cases reported in other Forums.)+
+I don't really want to exchange my IPhone for another 3GS because I am quite sure that this is a software-problem which was brought by IOS4.0.+
+Please guys take this message serious and fix this bug very soon. We need our phones functioning properly!+

I had the "repeated reboot" problem unstoppably since installing OS 4.0 on an iPhone 3GS. After installing the iPhone Configuration Utility, which can be found here:

http://www.apple.com/support/iphone/enterprise/

I found that I was getting a repeated error message of

iPhone CLTM25 <Error>: CLTM: could not find Temperature in IOPMPowerSource

However, unlike hightower99, I never saw the other error message concerning sensors. I ordered a new battery and installed it myself, and it immediately fixed the problem. In my own case, I believe that the temperature sensor (which is part of the battery assembly) was bad. Now running 4.01 with no problems whatsoever. This is a very intractable problem for many people and I strongly suggest that everyone on this thread with a problem try the iPhone Configuration Utility and post symptoms in this thread, and most importantly send the log from the Utility to Apple's bug reporting URL, which is in a post above.

For the gods' sake, people, QUIT YOUR WHINING.

It's a device. There is a software problem. As long as there have ever been devices there have been such problems.

Read the **** thread, too.

First: go to http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html

The more people who file a bug here, the more they will pay attention.

Did you go there and report your bug? Or are you just groaning about it here?

Second: Phone up Apple. Go here http://www.apple.com/support/contact/phone_contacts.html to get the number.

Tell the technician that you have a 3GS. Tell them that it reboots spontaneously after 5 minutes under 4.0 and 4.0.1. My technician said, OK, some phones have a hardware incompatibility, so we will send a courier to collect your phone and send a new phone to you.

OK? It's a solution. If your phone is NOT under warranty, well, I can't say what Apple will do, but for pity's sake, folks, WHINING ABOUT IT and COMPLAINING ABOUT APPLE isn't going to do any good.

Sheesh.

Your iPhone's warranty is given by Apple, not the cell provider. Did you ring the number given at http://www.apple.com/befr/contact/ ?

Oh, and by the way, here in Ireland I bought my iPhone from O2, not from Apple.

I did ring the Belgian support number, and when you press 4 for iphone service - it tells you to call Mobistar, who is a Belgium cell operator, and not one i have my contract with.

Aug 11, 2010 1:45 AM in response to chassum20

Please... if you are having a problem fill in the feedback form and list it as a BUG:

* http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html*

From everything I've read, Apple say they are unaware of the problem (and they've made no press release or official statement saying they are looking into the reboot problem).

I've sent a few of these in, but I think it needs everyone to complete one that is having problems - maybe then they will look into it.

May be a worth also including a link to this topic when completing the feedback.

I had no problems pre-ios4, but my phone reboots during calls also 😟
