Flap on the Apple iPad case?

Maybe I just expect more, but I don't see what the point of this flap is on the case. After sliding the iPad into the case, it's clearly not going anywhere. Tucking a flap in over it seems pointless. And otherwise, I don't see a need for the flap in any other function. Also, even when i tuck it in, it seems like it doesn't tuck neatly. Am I missing something?

Mac SE, P-book 160,MacMini,G3,G5,MBP, iPad, lots of boxes with lights and things, Mac OS X (10.5.8), desk, chair, lamp.....

While the fit of the iPad into the case seems very secure, it might loosen up as the case stretches a bit over time. So, the flap seems to be extra security to ensure the iPad doesn't slip out if picked up or carried carelessly. It took a bit of doing, but the flap will tuck behind fully and neatly if you patiently work it in. Also, I like the suggestion it helps keep dust bunnies from accumulating behind the device.

Thanks for the feedback all and yes there is a question here: "What purpose does the flap serve?" If I tuck it in, as some kind of 'seal' to the iPad in the frame of the case, it's pointless. This thing isn't going to slip out, with or without the flap. Plus, when you tuck it in, it puckers out on the edges. If I leave it out, it just hangs out there like some extra microfiber remnant looking for something to do.

To be sure, this debate is about aesthetics. It's not like the case doesn't work. I like the case. It's light and protects the glass, looks sleek. But I'm not going to take an Xacto knife to this thing. Apple's known for great product design and this is fine...but who needs this flap??

I'm not going to try to convince you that there is a point to the flap, but if you're having trouble tucking it in, try using a butter knife or something that won't damage the iPad or the case to help get the edges of the flap all the way down. Once it's fully tucked in, it's not an issue--unless you plan on taking the iPad out of the case in which case you'll have to deal with it again when you put the iPad back in.

Cruft and dust bunnies? This isn't like some huge gap under the bed...it's a few mm of space.

The consensus here is that the flap is to be tucked in; it's not, uh, a handy Post-it note space or anything else. I'll fly with that. When tucking it in, I also see these 2 puckers sticking out on the corners. It doesn't matter how snug I tuck it in.

I know I'm nitpicking, but I just had to raise the issue. We have high expectations from our Apple products. If this were a Dell, it would come with some hideous Targus case with 27 zippers and pockets.

Very, very tiny dust bunnies....

When tucking it in, I also see these 2 puckers sticking out on the corners. It doesn't matter how snug I tuck it in.

Looking very closely at mine, I think I see what you mean. If it bothers you, it bothers you. It doesn't matter whether it bothers anyone else. That kind of thing can drive you nuts. If you can still return the case, you may want to do that. There are lots of others out there. I also have a leather(ette) one I got on Amazon for a bit less when my Apple one was on back order. It's much better looking, I think and has more options for use as a stand. However, it's bulkier. I decided to keep both.

Ask anybody with a case that doesn't have a similar flap (like me) no matter how snug it feels today in a month it won't be so snug and that flap will be your friend.

I think what he means is that the Apple case is so tight, that it isn't going to slip out, no matter where the flap is.

This whole flap over the flap is pretty comical. And that includes the suggestion to make an appointment w/the Genius Bar (you are joking, right?). If people are tucking it in and they're seeing a little imperfection, let's call it, then they're not +doing it wrong+. If it were just me, then my bad. But there's more than one. (BTW, mine did not come with instructions or a diagram or anything.

Muddy, I'm wondering if you have a genuine Apple iPad case without the flap? Or is it some other manufacturer? If it's Apple, maybe they made some without the flap and they learned the flap really helps.

Looks like people are flip flopping over the need for a flap. <insert more puns below if you dare>

An appointment to learn how to fold the flap... No comment.

When I took my iPad for replacement the girl behind the bar handed it back to me and told me... You remove it... And I can see why. It took two of use to remove the iPad from the case. When it came time to put the replacement into the case, it was easier compared to the first time. I would imagine that if you remove the iPad from the case from time to time it will loosen over time. The flap probably adds to the strength to the frame of the case. Cutting it off might deform the frame of the case over time.

I never even saw the instructions.... just wrestled the iPad in and got busy with it........

Do the developers take into account "old eyes without glasses" when they create these things?

I wondered, for a moment, what the flap was for, but just figured the flap was there to make people ask "why is it there?".
I wasn't about to fall into that trap!

As it is, well, it just flaps around, which is what any good flap should do, huh? 😉
