IOS4 A Big Mistake...THE END

For those that followed the previous thread, here is where i end it. I was on the phone with tech support well into the night and morning. Countless restores, reboots, etc. Same story. Keep in mind, I consider myself an IPhone Power User...business wise. Yes, I have games on there that my 11 year plays on trips and a solitaire and spades game that I use while stuck at airports but I use this 3g HEAVILY for my companies. I have 8 email addresses on it, extensive calander and contacts. I have some music and occassionally put a movie on it but its a business tool for me.

I was finally passed to a tech that was a manager and we had a lengthy discussion. Here is a summary of our conversation.
*They, Apple, know they have a major problem with 3g upgrade to IOS4, they actually anticipated it. IOS4 was developed for things going forward, not backwards. There was a debate early on if IOS4 should even be included for the 3G. IOS4 was specifically written for IPhone 4. Future not past.
*He did not give me a solution on how to rollback to 3.1.3 because Apple does not support that type of fix. He suggested I purchase the IPhone4 or research online on finding a way to rollback.
*He said there may be an update/patch later but their concentration now is the rollout of IPhone4 and making sure those owners have the best experience.
*The IOS4 update was free to consumers. If we choose to use it, then we must be aware it is "freeware" and there will be risks. Using IOS4 was not required by the consumer so they take the risk.

It was a good conversation and very frank on both sides. From a business side, I understand what he is saying, but holding this useless 3G, I am an irritated consumer that has no recourse.
I will continue to search out a way to rollback to 3.1.3 so if anyone knows a good fix, please let me know. In the meantime, I have a phone only so it will be a transition on how to manage without my IPhone. I will definitely hold off on the IPhone 4 as I anticipate problems with that rollout also. Seems like Apple is becoming infamous for this type of stuff but we keep buying the goods.
I never thought I would ever say this but I am going later today to look at a Droid to see if it will fit my needs.
For those of you in the same boat, I do feel your pain. I wasted an entire day on this that I could ill afford. When technology begins to hold us back then we have to wonder if it is really progress.

Hello Steve,

I finally found a way to roll back to 3.1.3. (I made a time machine backup before the roll back to save my data.)

How to:
1. You need the old software, named something like "iPhone1,2 3.1.3_7E18Restore.ipsw" (this is the name of the file I found in my trash.)
2. Set iPhone into DFU mode: hold home and sleep for exactly ten seconds, release sleep and continue holding home for exactly ten more seconds, release both, all while plugged in to your Mac/PC
3. iTunes should find iPhone now.
4. it shows a message you need to restore the iPhone -> OK
5. while clicking the restore-button hold down Shift (Windows) or ALT (MAC)
6. choose the above mentioned firmware
7. the iPhone is being restored with 3.1.3
8. iTunes shows an error message you may ignore
9. now you need to exit recovery mode: there is a program to do:
Recboot für Windows : http://bit.ly/9he64R (Requires .Net 4.0)
Recboot für Mac : http://bit.ly/bBelW2

Last thing to do is restore your backed up data. I could choose it, but if it isn't there I would try to get it from the time machine backup located in library/itunes/mobile backup

Hope it works for you!

I don't buy that the "vast majority" of iPhone 3G users are having issues. Nor do I buy for one moment, regardless of what a phone support rep, who isn't in on any type of company decision making, that Apple knew it wasn't going to work on iPhone 3G phones, but decided to release it anyway because "it's free so it's your problem." That's complete hogwash.

Remember, there are literally millions of iPhone 3G's in the wild. Millions of them. I do buy that a small, but still significant number of users have had issues. Even if it's only one percent, that's still thousands of users with a problem and that'll fill up a forum fast.

However, I personally have 7 iPhone 3G users in my circle (coworkers, wife, friends), and none of them have had any issues beyond the long "backup" time. Took me about 2 hours for the update to run, but once it was done my 3G has run great. Love the folders, love the unified mailbox, wish I had multi-tasking.

Hopefully Apple will work quickly to address those who have has issues with the update, because even if it's only 1 person, that's still 1 too many. However, to suggest Apple intentionally released an update to millions of phones that they knew in advance wouldn't work is ridiculous. If anything, Apple errs on the conservative side with these things (ie it would probably work fine, jailbreakers do it, but it's not perfect so we don't officially support it on this model-- see wallpaper).

What, may I ask, would be their incentive? As you point out, it's free so they don't make money giving you iOS 4? If you get the new iOS, you're less likely to rush out to buy a new iPhone, so the incentive would be to withhold it from you.

I too have definitely noticed a performance hit on my 3G - nothing like as bad as some of you guys seem to have had, but the phone is undeniably slower. Try typing reasonably fast; whole words are blank until they catch up now. And, I haven't figured out exactly what's causing it yet (Flash probably) but Safari crashes much more often.

Fortunately for me, I intend to upgrade to a 4 this week - but I can totally sympathise with all those who've been left stranded, or at best with a slightly worse phone than they had 2 days ago.

I second that statement.

My opinion and experience...

I think that iOS 4 has been a major headache for probably tens of thousands, not just thousands of users. My particular problems were an annoying Exchange password screen that appeared when entering the phone application (not mail as you might expect) and a bigger problem of not being able to transfer my apps onto the phone. After many hours of troubleshooting, 5 calls to Apple support, and 3 factory resets, the apps issue was resolved. It turns out that the new version of iTunes apparently changed something about how or where the database for iPhone apps are stored - at least on machines running Windows XP. My laptop runs Windows XP sp3. Although I've never had problems connecting my iPhone with iTunes or even with upgrading the iPhone OS or the iTunes software, this time was a different story. The senior agent was able to determine that iTunes was not looking in the right location for my apps. I had to highlight all of the apps on the drive, then drag and drop them into the iTunes library, and individually okay the transfer of each of the 180+ apps on my iPhone. Shouldn't this have been caught by the quality control folks at Apple or during a beta test of the software? Anyway, that problem was resolved.

The other issue regarding the annoying Exchange password pop-up, I was able to resolve, no thanks to a different senior agent, who was very rude and continually told me that what I was seeing couldn't really be happening. It turns out that Google (which I use for my contacts synchronization on the phone but not email) uses the Exchange account settings. I simply needed to enter my Google password, and all was well.

My conclusion - for all its self-righteous posturing as being the puritan in the technology industry, Apple still has a lot of things to fix internally.

Sorry should have said - that although itunes 9.2 is installed - when i connect my iphone i get an error message saying the iphone cannot be used because it requires version 9.2 of itunes and that i should down load it.

But I have downloaded it - that is what i'm running - infact i've downloaded and installed it five times now to be on the safe side. I'm going round in circles and tearing out my hair! HELP!!!

I THINK I'VE GOT IT! My iPhone was stuck in recovery mode and i couldn't restore the setting a error kept popping up so if this is happening to you, i think i have a solution (: I sent my iPhone into DFU mode and did alot of petting it and telling it it was the best iPhone 3G ever and it worked! Before it wouldn't let me restore its setting because after waiting for ever for it to back up and getting really frustrated restoring was what i turned to. When that didn't work shortly after i read this. Here's the link for sending it to DFU mode: http://askville.amazon.com/iphone-dfu-mode-explain-breif/AnswerViewer.do?request Id=12881693
I now i have the iPhone 4 software which, like everyone says, *****! Now i just need to downgrade to the software i know and love.

Hope this works for some1,
Sophie (:

I updated a 3GS, a 3G, and a iPod Touch to 4.0 without any problems. The 3GS and the iPod are about the same speed as before, while the 3G is slightly slower. My daughter is still using the old 3G and doesn't mind the performance, but it might bother me. The 3GS is greatly improved with the 4.0 features. At some point I will probably grab a iPhone 4 for myself and let my daughter have my 3GS, but I don't want to deal with trying to get my hands on one in the first few weeks. Overall, it's a worthwhile upgrade.
