Until Apple fixes the issue, the only work around is to add the artwork one track at a time. I have added approximately 2000 songs since this trouble began. While adding art track by track is a royal pain, I have not had one single issue utilizing this method.

Thanks conehd for the recommendation, is a waste of time, but it does worth it.

Can someone else confirm that adding art track by track doesn't hurt files? I'm not completely sure.

Also, the same way MP3 scan+repair works for MP3s, is there any utility to check FLAC or ALAC files?

I received an email from Apple yesterday. The engineers were able to duplicate the issue.  It occurs only when applying artwork to muliple tracks. Once the problem is resolved the fix will be part of an iTunes update.

I can confirm that I have not had 1 single corrupted track since adding artwork one track at a time. As I stated in my last post I have added over 2000 tracks since this issue began.

Thanks again conehd. One last question, just to make sure I'm doing it right:

By "adding artwork one track at a time" you mean:

    1. Select first track of the album,

    2. Get info (Command+I), go to "artwork" tab, then paste image (Command+V) or drag & drop an image from the desktop,

    3. Click "NEXT" button.

    Right?

Am I doing it correctly, or do I have to click "OK" and Command+I on every track?

    Exactly!

    1. Select first track of the album,

    2. Get info (Command+I), go to "artwork" tab, then paste image (Command+V) or drag & drop an image from the desktop,

    3. Click "NEXT" button.

The bug has something to do ONLY with adding art to multiple tracks at once. Something that some of us have been doing for years. The issue was first noted back in 2010. It didn't affect me until August of this year.
The problem for the iTunes engineers was that is a totally random issue. It took them a couple of weeks to even duplicate the problem.

Hopefully it will be fixed in the next update.

I'd like to add my voice to this, as I've been wrestling with the same issue.  iTunes 10.5.2, OS 10.6.8.

I ripped a dozen CDs today, and only one showed the issue, where several of the tracks became corrupted after using multiple-track selection to add artwork.

Re-ripping the CD and using the same technique (multiple-track-selection) to add artwork resulted in the exact same corruption, but with different songs on that same album each time.  That's the only album that had the issue.

Re-ripping the CD and individually adding artwork to each track solved the issue, the tracks are playing normally and they display their artwork properly.

I found that I can reliably tell which tracks are corrupt by looking at the files' icons in the Finder (I did a Spotlight search for all music files modified today in the iTunes folder).  The ones with album artwork as the file icon are all good, the ones that show the generic music note icon OR a black field icon are corrupted.

Thanks to conehd and all above for tracking this issue down!  Where would Apple be without you?

In case it helps anyone, I've ripped over 50 CDs since last Wednesday using Apple Lossless, most of whose artwork was found by iTunes automatically.  I've manually added 24 album covers using the multiple-track selection method, of which two corrupted some of the music files.  Those CDs were the Pulp Fiction soundtrack (bought new in 1994) and Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits Vol. 3 (also bought new in 1994).

The latest iTunes version fixed the issue

How many cds have you tried since the update?

Almost ten. Remember don't play any song before any input.

The issue back again after 20 CDS input, now I delete the music/iTunes/album artwork/cache, does help

Sorry, I mean to trash the whole folder of cache under album artwork, dont worry after that the whole folder will appear again, and everything back to normal again.

Thanks for helping with this.  iTunes 10.5.3 has the issue.  I just had it happen again with Neil Young Unplugged (1999).  It's maybe 1 in 20 CDs that does it, but those CDs appear to do it every time.

I did not have success with the deleting cache technique, it changed nothing that I could tell.  Songs still were corrupted, and would continue to be newly corrupted after artwork added to multiple tracks.

As best I can tell, the best workaround is to add artwork to tracks individually.  Bummer, but it does work.

The part taht ***** is that it's totally random. Like Mitch experienced you rip a bunch of cds and have no problem. You think everything is good then Bam! it happens again.

I was told by Apple that it should be fixed in one of the next iTunes updates. The 10.5.3 update did NOT address this issue.

Usually when there are fixes in an update they are usually described in the about section of the update window.

This latest update ONLY introduced support for the new iBooks 2 application for iOS and allowing users to sync their textbook purchases.

Until then it's one track at a time.

Having the same issue on Windows 7 here, it started after iOS5 on my iPhone.  What happens for me is if paste it in the artwork thumbnail the song will just not play, even if its individual files.  I have to paste it in Windows Media Player (who I trust more!) and I'm ok.  I also can't paste album art by going into info for one song, unless I do a batch of stuff, which then corrupts all affected songs.

    iTunes drives me nuts!
