AT&T won't support Tethering on the 3GS!?! WTF!

After updating to iOS4 I decided to explore the new option for Internet tethering (since we've been waiting for a year for AT&T to support it). After switching to the DataPro 2G service I could not find an option on the AT&T website to turn on tethering, so I called them. What they told me is that they will only support tethering on the iPhone 4!!! You've got to be sh!?ing me! Is this AT&T's way of getting us to upgrade to an iPhone 4 and lock into a new 2 year contract? Or am I missing something?

Raymond, there's a "set up tethering" button in my preferences under network. Scroll down. Every time I open that pane, it has a little spinny wheel and then some text appears explaining that the button should be used to set up internet tethering. As I have no interest in dropping my current data plan for a 2GB plan, I haven't gone past that. Have you?

Yes, I did. This is what started the process and led me to call AT&T after I could not figure out why and did not have an option for tethering among the AT&T features. AT&T said that they will only support tethering on the iPhone 4.

I believe AT&T said just that when they announced the feature, so what is the problem?

When iPhone OS 3 came out, AT&T said they would have tethering in September 2009. The iPhone 4 didn't exist then.

In Canada tethering works on the iPhone 3 and 3GS, via USB or Bluetooth. You can still use the iPhone for calls or other functions while tethering. There is no extra charge, as long as you have at least a 1 GB data plan. It does not require iOS 4 or the iPhone 4.

If AT&T is restricting it to the iPhone 4 it is just to limit the data on their network, not due to hardware limitations in the earlier iPhones.
