Panther and External USB HD

Hello,

Is it possible to install Panther on to an external usb harddrive has os 9 on it?

I plan to take the HD from my iMac and put it in an external enclosure. Then use my ibook to install Panther from a DVD on to the iMac HD in the usb enclosure.

iMac - 333mhz Rev. D, 196 mb ram, 20 gb WD hd.

iBook G4 (April '04), Mac OS X (10.4.3)

Hello! You can install Panther on a usb drive but it won't be bootable on usb. As I recall the iMac has firewire? Correct? If so why not boot into firewire target disk mode? Here's the info. Tom

No, my iMac doesn't have firewire but i plan to take the iMac HD out of the enclosure when panther is installed and put it back in the iMac

Hey,

I tried that and the installer would not let me install to the external drive. It said that I would not be able to boot from it and would not let me continue. Is there any way I can "force" panther to install?

No it doesnt have firewire.

I tried to install through iBook and it gave me an error at disk selection saying I cannot install to external hd because I can't boot from it.

Is there any way I can force the installer to install to it?

Mike:

Don't waste any more time trying. You cant create a boot drive on a Fire Wire external HDD, but not on a USB drive. You can attempt that procedure using a computer with FW drive and your internal in a FW enclosure.
