i got my iPhone4 today and i couldn't activate it online, and by phone the lady told me to switch the SIMs..she is obviously wrong and a poor excuse for customer service. she called me back and told me to go to an AT&T store so i did and they said they can't activate it tomorrow. has anyone with AT&T activated theirs yet? and do u think i can try and midnight tonight?

i am forever converted!
I have a premier account with AT&T and they sent me an email with an activation link. Once you get to that link, you need to put in the IMEI & SIM numbers to start the activation process. I did that while my iPhone was being synched - after the refresh my activation was still pending. Hence I restarted my iPhone and it immediately activated the new device.
Try the universal solution of restarting the phone!! :P
My phone kept stating that the "Activation had timed out" and to check my time, date, and region settings on the computer. I just rebooted my computer and reconnected the phone and it activated. I hope yours is as simple. (Imac 27" i7)
ok, now what do i do if my old iphone is still on? cuz it's just switching service from one phone to another, does my old one have to be off, or not have the SIM in or something. or should they both just lose service/gain service at the same time?
I read on other posts on this board from people who also had trouble that they dialed 611 (to reach AT&T) from their old phone and one of the options was to activate a new phone and they did it almost instantaneously.
still nothing!! i've tried everything! called apple they said it's AT&T's problem.
call AT&T and everything seems to go fine, he said my old iphone would disconnect the call and it did but still nothing on the new iPhone 4.
i restarted everything about 6000 times and still nothing, this is getting to be very frustrating, i guess my best bet is to wait till tomorrow when the lines are jammed and i'm on hold for hours.
Wow that's crazy! I had no problem activating mine via the website. My SIM was already installed with all the IMEI numbers already typed in when I pulled it up on the website. Sorry you're having so much trouble. 😟
When I plugged mine into iTunes the SIM already had my phone number plugged in. All I had to do was activate through iTunes, that took about 30 seconds and it was ready for usage (the restore of my old data took about 15 minutes though).
can u be more specific about activating it through itunes, cuz everything is snyced, photos, music, apps, everything. i just have an iPhone 4 with no service, maybe i missed something? like i said before i'm still using my 3g, would this be causing any problems?
---------EDIT
alright i had to make an account from my family plan, i hope i didn't mess anything up for my step dad( the main account holder haha) and after i made my account i was able to change my IMEI number....lets see what this does. it told me to turn off my phone for 5 minutes then turn it back on
I've had the same problem, been on the phone with AT&T. From their perspective the iPhone 4 has been activated; from mine, I kept seeing the "No Service" indicator. What finally solved my problem was that I remember a popup came up on my iPhone 4 screen saying "Please turn off airplane mode". But since I checked my screen and saw that it was OFF I ignored it. While I was on hold, I decided to turn ON Airplane Mode and then turn it OFF. Within seconds the No Service sign went off and I got the AT&T Symbol plus bars. My iPhone 4 was now activated.
What happened in my case is that when I do an iTunes connection for backup I put my iPhone 3G in Airplane mode. Somehow my iPhone 4 software or AT&T network servers read that my iPhone 4 was on Airplane Mode and the No Service problem started.
Also, you might want to check your iPhone 4 ICCID number (Settings>General>About, then scroll down) . Mine was blank, but after the network activation it was filled.
