Perhaps this might also explain some issues with battery life reduction. If your hand or fingers bridge these lines and cause an addition resistance in the antenna then just maybe this also drains the battery a little more. I would like to hear from an engineer on this.

This is fun. I'm having a happy day. Thanks Apple (sarcastically), you're getting a little more like Microsoft every day. Rushing a product to market before it's been thoroughly tested.

Not exactly a coincidence that Apple decided to sell the bumper things at the same time as the iPhone. They knew about this all along. But I guess form won over function on this one. At least it looks pretty....

yeah, it's a huge conspiracy. apple did it on purpose. their evil plan was to p* off hundreds of customers so that they could sell a $29 item. it's that kind of genius marketing strategy that made them one of the most successful tech companies in the history of the world.

if you are not willing to accept the glitches that come with a brand new tech product, then don't get it on the day it comes out.

    Double ***?????

So when I get my Otter Box cover it will make my signal go ape ****? So Apple will now come up with the 4Gs after they fix this?

Confirmation on this major issue people! Touch the black lines and the true signal drops (not just the bars!) and it does it everytime, everywhere. Goes straight from 5 bars to 1 bar. This is a major design flaw. The beautiful stainless steel edge could have just been made out of rusty Mr.Pibb cans, since it has to be completely covered up to work anyway. Apple?!? I love you, how could you make such a huge quality mistake? Did not one person hold this phone during testing?

Some of the comments on this thread are insane. I cannot comfortably and securely hold the phone without touching the black lines...and right handed people hold the phone in their left hand people...and no, a free bumper does not solve the problem, as they are fugly!

*Fix the problem Apple, and move the black line to the bottom where nobody touches the thing!*

My bumper just arrive via FedEx minutes ago and so far it seems to solve the problem. The bars remain the same no matter how I hold the phone. Mind you I'll have to experiment with it some more. Even without the bumper my reception improved a lot since yesterday. I was getting "No service" yesterday and I have not encountered that problem at all today even when I bridge the aerials with my hand.

Even with one bar I can make and receive phone calls. I do have to admit that we do not have any cell towers nearby and reception has always been spotty even with Verizon.

This is horrible! Although I haven't received mine yet but this definitely unacceptable!
For those who think this is OK, just use a case and get over with it, think again! You really would let APPLE get away with this? I won't. I will ask my money back as soon as I experience the problem.

Some of you will buy anything that has an APPLE logo on it, this is pathetic. A phone that has no reception when you pick it up? This is a joke!

You're right. I love Apple products as much as anyone, but come on. This is total BS. I have been able to repeat this problem 20 times in a row with my iPhone 4: 5 bars, touch bottom left corner, 0 bars in 30 seconds, repeat. When running a speed test over 3G if I touch the corner it stalls the test completely, instantly. The signal is instantly being cut to nothing. That is TERRIBLE and not acceptable.

*Saying "buy a case" is NOT a solution to a clear manufacturing/design defect!* Thats like a car manufacturer saying you need to buy a blue tarp to cover the roof of your new car because it leaks rain water in otherwise.

I opened a support ticket. Temporary resolution is to hold the phone differently. I verified and the phone cannot be returned if it has been opened. This issue could not have gone unnoticed.
  • Frodo B Level 1 (120 points)
Well none of us expected this to happen. I was under the impression that the new external aerial would give the phone better reception.

As you said the reception issue is problematic...

I don't think the location of that join is going to make any difference. The fact that your are holding the antenna is going to upset the way that it works. I don't remember whether the different antennas are fully separate electrically, I am assuming they are though, but effectively joining them together by holding it in your left hand is going to make things worse.

When designing an antenna, and its receiver/transmitter, they are designed for a particular frequency or range of frequencies. By holding then antenna you are throwing this out the window.

I used to work for Philips as a radio engineer and you could see this effect quit clearly on a spectrum analyser. When you are transmitting, and you would see a nice clean spike, if you then grabbed the antenna, you would see this lose a lot of power but then see its harmonics gain in power.

As far as moving the lines they might need to rotate them all around the outside of the edge, so that the individual antennas are the same length, if you see what I mean.

Its a good looking design, no doubt, but a messy one technically by the looks of it. Poor Apple.

Apple will quietly come out with a 4GS or alternately you will begin to see a change in the stainless steel band that solves this problem Don't expect them to publicly admit it though.

Or the iPhone 4L, for left handed people.

Well, I bought a case for it (Not the overpriced bumper, but a very sleek one for $5) so hopefully this will not be an issue when I use it on my i4.
