Iphone 3Gs keeps randomly fetching mail

Same thing is happening to me. I have everything set to manual and it's constantly "dinging" since I updated to os 4.0. It's starting to annoy me. 🙂

I "think" I've figured out what is going on with my phone. I double clicked the home button, and it pulled up all the apps that are multitasking in the background, which included mail. Then I held my finger on it till the "-" sign came up to close down the apps. Since then it quit fetching mail and my battery life has improved. Hope that helps!

I've encountered this same issue, and yes, it must be down to multi tasking of the mail. I don't want to have to remember to close down Mail in the multi tasking every time I check my mail though! Anyone found a better way round this?

Luckily, mine is the new Iphone 4, and the battery is amazing so far, but surely Apple have thought of this, and invented an easy way to kill off all background apps automatically? If not, I guess the first person to design this mail specific app solution will be on to a winner.

This keeps happening to me as well. I've done some testing over the past two days and it happens even if I manually 'quit' the Mail app. I've double-checked and Mail is not running in the background.

I have a Gmail account that is set to 'Fetch' and a Yahoo account that is 'Manual'. So now with iOS4, the Yahoo account is fetching too.

It's only a minor inconvenience, but I hope it's something that gets addressed soon.

Anyone seen any confirmation from apple of this bug? Its really annoying me now. When I'm at work, I have all my accounts open on my PC, so I don't want my Iphone collecting my email every 15 mins and running the battery down.

Same here on both me and my wife's iphone4. Both for Yahoo accounts, push is off and fetch is set to manual.

I have the same problem. I didn't realize that every application that you access stays running in the background. So I had like 15 apps down at the bottom (after you double tap the home button)

I think that should be addressed. Apps shouldn't stay running all the time and or you should have the option to allow or not allow once you exit the app.

I have this problem on my iPhone 4. Push is off and fetch is set to manual for all email accounts. Yahoo mail keeps automatically getting new mail. Only Yahoo mail though.

It's totally annoying. This needs to be fixed like yesterday.

Same problem here, but on an iPhone 4. Only my Yahoo! account is affected.

Killing the mail app process had no effect here. Very frustrating to find that it's a widespread issue and there's not a workaround!

Ya the multi tasking is a good idea but you should be able to use I as a second choice the app should close out with the home button and like the jailbreak hold the home for multi task that app

I have the same problem on my yahoo account on the iPhone 4, where is fetches email while the email app is in the background even though the settings are push off and manual fetch. Force closing the email app via the multitasking bar works around the problem, but opening the Contacts app re-opens the email app.
