This is NOT a permanent fix.

It will wipe out your wireless setup settings, but it restored my proximity sensor and others.

    Good luck

This appears to have worked for me. (*crosses fingers*)

OK, thank you! I, will keep an eye on it. It might have been covered before on this this thread, but this is a crazy thread to try to follow. It is getting ridiculously overwhelmed with antenna complaints and others making rants here off topic, shesh. Maybe we can get a little more organized on sticking to relevant threads to post to?

Sure, that must be the reason apple hasn't done anything yet to solve the problem, the thread complaints aren't pure enough....Sorry for my angst, but this post was on topic for the first 1,000 posts.

    For anyone new:
    1) we have yet to find a permanent solution to the issue. Many people will hop on to report that "resetting their settings" or "restoring their phone" fixed the problem. Sadly a great deal of these people come back only to report that it's still happening.

    2) TrentP is our team captain. His findings seem to be the closest anyone has gotten to solving the problem. Look up his posts for more info.

    3) On page 109, TrentP posted an open letter and some links to send it to. Please do that.

Just adding my proximity sensor to the list of those with issues.
On a call with the phone to my ear and the sound will all of sudden go to external speaker. Pull the phone away from my face and the ear piece is now got the sound. Weird, because when I look at the screen coming out of black, which would normally indicate that the sensor is working properly, the option for pressing speaker phone is available.

It must happen so fast that it looks as if everything is normal, except for the fact that I was listening to the other caller via the speaker phone, and he was saying I was breaking up.

So, in desperation and panic about the 30 day return period coming quickly to an end, I called Apple last night to explore my options. The first time I called, I spoke to a nice lady who told me that she had to get a senior tech and put me on hold. After I waited about 10 minutes, I, ooops, accidentally PSed (proximity sensored) the call and hung up on her!! I called back and got a nice fellow, who also claimed that he had to get a senior tech involved because I was his first caller who reported this issue. I promptly laughed in his ear (carefully, tho because I didn't want to PS the call again). After remaining on hold for several minutes again, the rep told me that Apple would replace my phone. They agreed to send me a new 32GB iPhone in exchange for letting them put a hold on $699.00 of my hard earned dollars. I was assured that as long as I sent back my current phone ASAP that the hold would come off quickly in a few days. The only reason I did it is because I truly want to exhaust all possible options before cancelling my contract and going back to my 3G. I also didn't go back to the store to swap it out because we are being told that the 32 GB are out of stock in all the local Apple stores. I have to say that I am on the way to being totally disgusted by all of this. If I had the death grip issue, I would have certainly returned the **** thing by now. I really love the phone, i think it's an awesome device if I want to play games, shoot video, answer emails or shop on ebay- just not stay on a phone call for more than 5 or so minutes. The rep on the phone assured me that the new device would not have the proximity issue like the first one, tho, I wonder how he knows that if I was the first caller to report this issue to him . Do they think we are idiots??? I'll be sure to report back and let you all know how the replacement is.

I have the same issue. I never had this with previous iPhone.
this is very annoying as it suddenly mutes most of my calls!

    Hello All,

I just wanted to log my own complaint on Apple's servers. I too am suffering from a defective face that isn't compatible with my iPhone. I'm constantly pushing mute/contacts/facetime. The first time I noticed this issue was after repeatedly hanging up on my boss 3 times in 5 minutes. Apple, please, I beg you, fix this issue in the next update. I hope you've delayed 4.01 because of this. It would be shameful if you were devoting your time to breaking jailbreaking when you should be fixing this farce.

As for the reception issue... There are certain geographical areas where I can make use of the new pause button on the lower left side of the phone. This button is great!! Unfortunately though, app developers haven't incorporated it into any of their games yet. It only works when browsing, chatting on the phone, or running speed tests. Fortunately though, apple's new update with longer bars shouldn't interfere with the original functionality of this nifty new pause feature.

I have the same problem-- and I've only had the Iphone4 for a week and it just started muting and holding my calls... my 3G did the same thing so much I had to resort to the headset...Will try the reset...

Same issue! i've ended about 25% of my calls. it is really ******* me off that I upgraded my 3GS to the iphone4 when it doesn't work as well. totally awesome.

Add me to the list... the sensor is whack.

My phone hangs up in the middle of calls. I never had this problem with my prior iPhones.

I was having problems with my proximity sensor too! I tried the "reset" and other tricks but nothing worked. ...finally I started trying a few troubleshoots on my own and, and well I fixed it! What seemed to work for me was deleting all my photos, then I put the phone between my armpit (I advise doing this without deodorant) for 30 seconds, and then after that I put the phone underneath my pillow for about 30 minutes ...worked for me, give it a try.
  • germanwarfare Level 1 Level 1 (15 points)
The fixes are only temporary... The sensor starts to go off whack again... Every time I reset the settings the sensor is extremely snappy. Then it reverts back.....

It's funny how high everyone's expectations are from Apple. Other companies have released junk for years. And they resolve past issues by releasing new model after model. I really want to cut Apple some slack here. Please figure this out.........
