iPhone 3G - wifi not working after upgrade to OS4

After the OS4 update completed last night, I am not able to access wi-fi networks. At home, I can't see my own wifi network nor any of the neighbor's networks which I could previously see. At work, I can see the wifi network but am unable to connect to it.

I bought the 3G only 15 months ago and now I don't know if it is going to become a lemon. I have heard rumours that you are not allowed to downgrade to OS 3.1.2 which was working very well for me - is this true? I didn't see any warnings in itunes and I did backup my phone before saying OK to the upgrade.

I have tried all of the diagnostics I could find on the forum:
- resetting the router
- resetting the iphone network settings
- disabling cellular data
- turning off security on my wifi network (still couldn't see it)

Is my only option to do nothing and live with a broken phone, hoping that this is addressed with a software update? (i.e. my own fault for upgrading?)

Hopefully there will at least be an announcement of which problems apple is working on a patch for so I know whether I should be patient or if I need to try and research some more desperate measures such as trying to find a way to downgrade to 3.1.2 (which could lead to even worse problems... but honestly I would rather take the risk then not have wifi access anymore.)

If anyone has any ideas I'd appreciate hearing them.

Thanks.

I have tried all the suggestions (hard reboot, reconfiguring router, etc.) I have read for past four days and nothing worked. Went to bed late last night frustrated nothing would work. When I got up this morning I looked at iPod and iPhone and both were working properly (connection to Wi-Fi without me trying to connect them). I feel that Apple did something on their end during the night. Support called me this afternoon and wanted me to download 4.0.1 which came out today. Support stated all problems were corrected with this upgrade. Mine is still working properly after the download.

I did a soft reboot, then reset the network back to default. It finally gave me the option to put in the password for my mifi device. I did not think this was going to work, but after typing in password, my wifi icon showed up on my 3GS! It did work and I don't know why?? All I can say to everyone, I believe this 4.0 upgrade is going to take patience to deal with and could be hit or miss, depending on your attitude for that day. Lol. This worked for me, doesn't mean it will work for the next person. I will definitely wait on switching iPhone, after all the problems other people are encountering. Best regards to everyone!

Same problem here with my 16GB 3G. I'd seen this kind of problem once before on another WiFi enabled device. Like others here, power cycling didn't help. Fortunately I was able to fix it by 'forgetting' my home network, then rejoining it. Go to 'Settings' -> 'Wi-Fi' -> 'Choose Network' -> (name of network you are trying to use) -> 'Forget this Network', then rejoin it.

My phone does not give me a prompt to Forget this Network. I did see that prompt once when I was trying to troubleshoot this problem, but I did not use it and I've never seen it since.

Also, it doesn't matter what password I type in for my network, it just has to be 8 characters. My password in 9 characters. Perhaps not coincidentally, the first thing I noticed in my network settings on my phone after WiFi disappeared was that the first 8 characters of my password were visible in the Client ID field. The response to any 8-character pw is always "unable to join".

My phone never stopped recognizing my network; it just won't let me join. None of my other wireless devices have this prob. And it did not happen immediately after I installed 4.0. It was about a week later.

FREEZER SOLUTION!!!! AMAZING!!!!

After Tech Support tried everything with me I just decided to try the Freezer Solution. It made absolutely no sense to me and no one has been able to explain why it works but IT WORKS!

I turned off the phone and put it in the freezer for 8 minutes. Turned on the phone and connected via Settings/WiFi and BAM... first connection since installing iOS 4.0!!!! It has auto-connected every since!

Amazing!

One more testimony: iPhone 3G was working fine until the 4.0.1 upgrade. Now I am unable to connect to any WiFi service. The phone sees the signal but is unable to connect. Two visits to the Genius Bar: 1) They sent me home to restore. 2) They did a restore as new at the counter - still no connection. Genius solution: Give them $99 for a restored replacement phone. They see this as just normal hardware failure.

This problem occurred a couple of days after I installed 4.0.1. I don't see how it could be a normal hardware failure, and I don't see how it could be my fault. The big question: Did 4.0.1 destroy the WiFi component or just disable it? And how long before we see 4.1?
