No accessory = "This accessory is not optimized for this iPhone..."

Anyone else having the same message pop up repeatedly?
Immediately after activating my phone and restoring my data, this message starts popping up for no reason I can identify.

No audio from iTunes, video files, or applications coming from the bottom speakers (only available via headphones).

Ringtone, alarms, and regular speakerphone work without any problem.

Never plugged into an accessory device and bluetooth has remained off since delivery...

It's madness...or perhaps a spooky ghost device haunting my new iPhone 4...

If it's with a brand new iPhone 4 I'd bring it in to Apple to be serviced/replaced as this appears to be a hardware related issue.

Having said that, and for others experiencing the issue on older devices, this issue typically occurs when damage occurs to the dock connector on the iPhone.

Most commonly this is seen when liquid comes in to contact with one of the 30-pin connectors and causes the phone to "think" an accessory is being plugged into itself when it really is not.

My iPhone 3GS was doing the same thing after I applied the InvisibleShield and it seems that the spray to apply the shield got into the dock connector when I was wiping away the excess liquid. Really annoying that it pops up with this message all the time.

Now by connecting the USB cable in an out of the iPhone, I can get the iPod volume control to come up and the message does not appear anymore, seemingly fixing the issue. Yet when I have to enter my passlock code, the message pops up again and the iPod volume control has disappeared again.

The only solution now is to disable the passlock code and never to switch the phone off.

Dodgy connector is the issue people and as Sakumo says it is either a manufacturing problem or caused by getting liquid into it!

As it seems everyone started having this problem at about the same time I find it hard to believe that we all got water in our connectors. I am positive that I did not, I was on a job site all day and I don't take my phone out often to keep from getting dust in it. I will attempt to blow it out with compressed air when I get home if it's possible that dust in the connector might cause this.

APPLE please listen and help. I have same message now repeatedly popping up when I dock my iPhone 3GS into my iPod universal dock to charge. It no longer allows me to play any sound through speakers whilst in dock. Total silence from iPod and TuneIn radio app. Very inconvenient as this has become my clock radio and no longer works. All OK for last 6 months, only failed since OS 4 upgrade.

Well My fix was to get the phone replaced. I called apple support and they had me run a few extra restores until they decided it was probably something related to the OS4 upgrade. They had me go into an apple store and got it replaced with a new 3GS. Pretty lucky too since my warranty was 2 days expired.

I am avoiding using any kind of dock other than anything that is 3GS/iphone 4 certified, and of course the cable to plug it into my computer

This problem is not unique to OS4, but the new OS makes the port more sensitive. The annoying pop-up message occurs on my wife's 3GS OS4 phone. I upgraded mine as well, but it doesn't occur there. In my car when I plug in my iPhone, if I plug the power in as well, there is interference with the music.
I will try cleaning the port first, otherwise I may take it to apple and replace the phone.

Have the same exact problems. Tried everything with no success. Gonna have to make an appt. Apple team member said he hasn't seen the problem but of course I couldn't get it serviced while I was near the apple store. I'm an hour away. Isn't that what they send out the drones testing the iPhones for so this doesn't happen. I also have the iphone4 32g. My wife's is 16g & she has no problem.

Plugged my new iphone 4 into my USA-spec GMC ipod interface only to be met with the now famous message followed by "this device not supported by iphone." It would not play the ipod mode as my 3g so faithfully did. After that, that dang message of "this accessory is not optimized for this iphone" began to appear randomly. Also I noticed that the typing clicks were no longer audible or only intermittently so. I rebooted the phone and did the headphone plugging in and out 10 times and that too did not cure the problem. Called apple and they had me do an all settings reset. Seems to have done the trick. Now that message no longer appears and it works in my truck with the USA-spec interface. Perhaps that will help someone here.

Had the same problem and found this on another foram

SIMPLE ! Don't folow that soft garbage posted. As another person posted your connection is likely coroded and making your iphone think it's plugged in to a device. SOLUTION. Take a dry toothbrush and clean the bottom connector out. I could not believe the dirt that came out of there. Works like a charm now !!! Just don't use the toothrbrush anymore !! Use it to clean your uphlostery in your car so your not wasting a toothbrush
