No accessory = "This accessory is not optimized for this iPhone..."

Anyone else having the same message pop up repeatedly?
Immediately after activating my phone and restoring my data, this message starts popping up for no reason I can identify.

No audio from iTunes, video files, or applications coming from the bottom speakers (only available via headphones).

Ringtone, alarms, and regular speakerphone work without any problem.

Never plugged into an accessory device and bluetooth has remained off since delivery...

It's madness...or perhaps a spooky ghost device haunting my new iPhone 4...

basically the dock connector is very sensitive to moisture and dust, and very suceptable to corrosion. I've found that a solution mentioned earlier was effective in temporarily fixing the problem, which was sucking air through the dock connector (dont blow (moisture)).

I also think that alot of these problems occur because people get their in-car accessories a little damp or wet or dirty and do not realize it and plug it into thier iDevice. Thus introducing moisture into the dock connector.

Funny thing is, most protection I've seen for iPhones do not include protection for the dock connector.

i had a pint of strongbow tipped on my phone tonight..

lost all sound (except for phonecalls.. they would work in normal an loudspeaker)

the music would not work unless plugged into headphones. no sound on any apps or key strokes

did hard reset. held both buttons for 10 secconds.. nothing

tried cleaning the headphone port but nothing worked. there was nothing left in there after i finished it..

tried reset again nothing...

did it again with charger plugged in and i heard the charging initialised "ping" the keystrokes worked while plugged in but the music and apps didnt..

cleaned out all the dust in the charger port with toothbrush and air duster and all is PERFECT =] thank god for that

This fault can be caused by a build up of dust in the charger port simply putting it in a charging cradle or connecting it to your computer via usb cable you can displace the dust or dirt onto one of the pins which in turn makes your the device think its connected to an accesory. If you clean out the port regular or when the problem occurs it should clear up and operate correctly.apple should consider making a cover for the port as the problem seems to be a quite frequent complaint which they cant simply answer over the phone instead they want to see the device in turn charging more money.

My phone started having the "this accessory is not optimized for this iphone" popup about a week ago after i plugged it into my sisters old dock/alarm clock combo. it also wouldnt play music from the iphone speaker. I assumed it was because it was a very old dock (ipod mini era) that caused a brain fart in my phone's computer. It turns out that because she had never used the dock and the plug was VERY dirty. this dirt transfered to my iphone dock port making my phone think that there was an accessory plugged in. Because the dirt was obviously not responding the message popped up every five minutes or so which irritated me to no end and drained my battery.

the fix:

buy some isopropyl alcohol 70% and soak a tiny piece of paper towl in it. wrap the paper towel around a toothpick and squeeze as much excess alcohol out of the paper towel as possible. GENTLY insert the paper towel into the dock port and rub it around until the entire port and reciever are clean. blow into the port gently to dry the alcohol and VOILA!!!

I hope you find this helpful. you can buy port plugs on amazon to protect the port from dirt in the future. also the Otterbox sells cases that cover the dock port.

Everyone,

A soft reset or hard reset will NOT fix this. The solution is simple. As posted by another on this fourm

Had the same problem and found this on another forum

SIMPLE ! Don't folow that soft garbage posted. As another person posted your connection is likely coroded and making your iphone think it's plugged in to a device. SOLUTION. Take a dry toothbrush and clean the bottom connector out. I could not believe the dirt that came out of there. Works like a charm now !!! Just don't use the toothrbrush anymore !! Use it to clean your uphlostery in your car so your not wasting a toothbrush

I powered off the phone. Used this technique making sure the bristles rubbed the top and bottom of the connector. Blew it out. Make sure you do not blow any spit into the connector. Repeated the process a few times. I was surprised at the fine particles that came out. Powered the phone back on and the message has not returned.

I started experiencing this problem after a road trip with friends. In reading through the posts (and I read through a lot of them) there seemed to be at least three separate reasons and fixes for this problem.

1. Miscommunication -- so you charged your iPhone with (particularly auto) older version charger. This is what happened to me.

FIX === hard power down, plug in computer (newer) USB for restart

2. Dirty holes (ha)

FIX === compressed air or dry toothbrush -- or you can try the repetitive plug, unplug method to loosen the gunk.

3. Water

FIX === I would first try placing it in a bag of rice over night. Rice helps absorb the moisture. Try the reset, and hard shut down with USB restart. If that doesn't work - take it to the Apple or your Phone provider and see if they can fix it. Hopefully nothing was damaged permanently.

Good luck! I am just hopeful I will not run into this agian.

This Hapoened to me this morning out of the blue while watching a YouTube video and thought it might be a software issue. I plugged it in and out of a dock I had to see if that would make any difference but it didn't. I thought I would have to do a full restore, but after seeing the toothbrush trick on this forum I decided to give it a go first, and sure enough it worked ( well 15-20 mins later no problems yet). You really would be surprised how much dirt gets into the dock connector, I didn't think that that would be the issue at all before I read this Forum, So thanks very much to everyone who suggested the toothbrush trick .

so I just contacted Apple tech for the same issue. My iPhone presented the optimization error directly after unplugging it from my aux cable through my car stereo system. The Apple Care representative and I both came to the conclusion that the phone must have still thought it was hooked into the car stereo (thus, the problem must have been some kind of interface confusion). To fix the problem, I simply plugged and unplugged a pair of headphones into the aux jack 5-8 times and the problem was immediately solved. This was a rather odd error. This is how I solved my issue.

Good luck,

Dan.
