From my experience they will not let you. what you need to do is go online under your account and add yourself as a authorized user for the retail store. Before I did that they would not let me get a new phone or change anything on the account seeing that my wife is the primary. I even had them call her but they said she needed to be there. Since I added me as a authorized user, I have not had any problem.
