iPhone 4 will not turn on

The title says it all. I opened the box. I plugged it into my MacBook. Nothing. I pressed the buttons, held the buttons, tried a different cable, connected it to the charger and waited an hour...

nothing.

Anyone know anything that can make a good iPhone refuse to turn on, or did I get a bad one?

I just had the SAME thing happen to me with my iPhone 4S 64gb. Out of no where the phone just turned off. No response from any buttons or charging it.Curious as I didn't think the battery was gone yet. So I plugged it into the car charger. Nothing. Held down the power button for a LONG time just to make sure, but there is NO response. Then power and home. Nothing. Plugged it into the battery case. Nothing. Got home, plugged it in to the charger. Nothing. I've had the phone for about 2 days. Then I let it charge for a few minutes and then held down the power and home for a LONG time -- until the Apple logo popped up. Yey! So now I have to figure out if this was a once-in-a-lifetime occurence or I need to negotiate a new unit. I guess time to wait and see, though I might document the problem with Apple Support. But it's working now (phew!!)

Just had a colleague come into work with a dead iPhone4 that had been working fine for around 6 months.. Screen was black, holding the Sleep/Awake button did nothing..

Googled and found this thread which said to hold the Sleep/Awake and Home button together and that did the trick.. eventually the Apple logo appeared and the phone was fine.

Oh well.. I have learned something new.

Cheers!!

3.5month iP4 failed to turn on. Talked for 2 hours to Apple support who were very helpful but unsuccessful.

Tried on different computers, changed USB ports, and everything suggested in this thread but no go.

Finally advised to return the iP4 and I would be provided with a replacement, however this will be a refurbished phone!!

I wonder how many people out there have had the same experience & whether Apple will address what is obviously a problem with some iPhones?

Thanks 'The handyman'......that worked!!! I was having the same issue as everybody here but my other problem is my lock/power button doesn't work. I thought I was screwed so as a last resort I gave your suggestion a try. I took the cover off and unhooked the battery. I left it unhooked for 15 minutes, put it all back together and plugged it into the computer. In a few seconds I got the Apple logo and I was good to go!!

Thanks again and I just wanted to co-sign just in case anybody was thinking of giving this a try.

Here's another video for getting to the battery. (just ignore the part where he actually removes the battery...we don't need to go that far)

Thanks everyone! I've just had the same thing happen to me. I was using my 4S 16GB this morning and then next time I looked at it, it was dead. No power, wouldn't charge, wouldn't turn on, no hard reset etc...

I only bought it a few days ago AND being New Years Day - the shop isn't open 😟

However, I persevered and finally got the phone up and running by holding down the hard reset buttons...

Still going to take it back when the shop reopens and not particularly happy.

Cheers all and HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

Lou 🙂

hi there,

i just received as a gift iphone 4 32gb...however the telephone has been "dead" for about 6 months without anyone bothering to fix it to take it to the store.

Anyaway I tried hard reset - nothing

DFU - iTunes recognizes the telephone only in this mode, however, it could not be reset - errors 1602, 3194 and 2005

Even removed the cover and disconnected the battery (didn't remove it from the body...just disconnected from the beard to cancel this "loop") - again the phone is in the same "dead" situation

The screen is black...and the only time that it goes on is when it is in the wall charger....starts for about 2-3 minutes...then tells me that I need to reset it (yeah like i didn't noticed) and then restarts itself and the same thing over and over....

The moment I disconnect it from the charger...ot goes black

I'm going to visit the service these days but before that...do you have any fresh ideas?

Thanks in advance!

BR,

Martin
