Q: Iphone 3G slow after update to IOS4

The upgrade to IOS4 took forever but eventualy was completed succesfully.
But the iphone is very slow with IOS4. It doesn't work as smooth as it used to be. Also new applications such as the iBook application are very slow, doesn't respond smooth on screentaps etc. Who has the same experience?
I'm thinking about going back to version 3.1.3 because IOS4 doesn't add anything to improve the user experience on the iPhone 3G.

I hope Apple will listen to their iphone users and will release an update soon for iOS4 which improves the performance on older iPhones.

Try a hard reset. Press on/off button as same time as navigation button. This should resolve these issues.

    It worked for me.

agree, seems difficult to believe, but isn't it strange that, given how many people have the 3G 'phone, this issue isn't featuring as a major spread in magazines & newspapers - it would make a good story !

Apple... how can you treat your customers like this?
Telling me my 2 yo iphone 3g is now a relic is an insult.
You now treat your loyal customers exactly the way the competition you were making fun of did.
This is unacceptable, and so insulting that I will not even try the iphone 4 (which btw we all know doest work properly).
How can you sell devices of that price, render them useless with a single software upgrade, trying to tell the very customer that either their 2yo device is obsolete, or that they hold their spanking new one the "wrong way" (its a f**g phone, how do you expect users to hold it???) and expect customers to remain loyal to your products?
Ive had enough of your arrogance, Im moving on.
Someone at microsoft must be drinking champagne this very moment....

Well after 2 months, Apple have finally woken up to the fact that "there may be a problem with IOS 4 on 3G iphones" and are looking into it.
I hope Apple never make cars!
    Heres the report....

Add my issues to the list. I have three 3G phones and all are annoyingly slow since the upgrade to OS4. I have tried hard reset, removing all data, restoring to factory settings. Nothing works. The phones are still slow to respond. Safari constantly locks up, gps does not work, and the WiFi takes forever to connect.

I know there will eventually be some sort of fix for this but it makes me very cynical about future purchases and the longevity of the support for them. I hope that all iP4 owners realize this may happen to them in the future. Then they'll hear "geez, that retina display is so 2010 anyway, just bite the bullet and get a new iP6".

So I just found this topic thread after having this conversation with apple on the phone:

"Sorry sir, we do not support downgrading your iphone back to when it was working. You have two options, take it into apple store and pay the out-of-warranty fee to get it fixed, or buy the new phone."

I can't believe apple just said this to me. They create problems with my phone with a software update, and then force me to pay them money (fix/upgrade) to fix it. I wish I had recorded the phone conversation, because I'm pretty sure what they are doing is 100% illegal.

Anyway, I found the solution. I'm canceling my iphone today. I'm taking a huge loss in all the apple apps/peripherals/software/hardware I own. But, I'm done with apple. I'm just thinking of all the money I'll save over the next few years going with pc. I've been a loyal apple customer/first adapter for many years. I wish they cared. Oh well.

Yes, this latest software update really adds insult to injury IMO. I updated my wife's iPhone 3G and it has been severely degraded from its previous 3.x state:
    - Battery drains in a wink
    - Slow performance
    - Poor reception etc.

I ran the update today hoping there might be a stealth fix tagging along with the security update, but this is not looking hopeful. Apple, please go public w/ an official response to this issue.

    Flac,

The problem is the consumer wasn't offered a choice and the fix isn't as easy as a reboot or restore. The main problem is Apple pushed an update indiscriminately when it should have been limited to only iPhone 4 customers.

It is clear that the hardware platform of the 3g and 3gs cannot run the iPhone OS4.0.x. It is a memory allocation issue.

    1. Apple should have tested this long prior to release
    2. Set the push from iTunes to only push to iPhone 4.0 or at least have iTunes archive the 3.x OS for and give the CONSUMERS a CHOICE to go back.

They didn't do either 1 or 2 - now a LOT of users have serious issues with the 3g /3gs iPhones. I had to use Lifehacker to roll mine back to 3.x however, I lost all my contacts because iTunes wouldn't let me restore unless I upgraded back to 4.x

This is a huge problem for companies and consumers.

Apple made a huge blunder when it first dismissed the antenna problem. They made no effort to acknowledge it or even fix it. Bumpers? Free Case? First it was:
    1. Don't hold it that way
    2. It's a software bug
    3. Here have a free bumper

Then to compound the issue, they pushed an update which killed the only iPhones they had on the market that worked without issues.

This is a huge blunder for Apple, and on the verge of fierce competition, Apple's response has been the WRONG response.

They should release two versions of the OS - one for 3g and 3gS and another version for iPHone 4 users, INCLUDING the security fixes.

You wouldn't buy a new car and accept it if the engine kept dying while on the freeway, why is this acceptable in your world Flac7?

I'm not sure what happened to Apple with iPhone, clearly they released software and hardware that has serious problems, problems they KNEW about before releasing (there is absolutely NO WAY the could not have known about these issues before release date). But as with many companies, release it first, fix it later. A very out dated business concept that just doesn't work in this day and age. People just aren't "accepting" serious problems like they used to -- the "new tech" of mobile devices is no longer new so problems just aren't acceptable any more.

Not sure what's going on with Flac, he/she seems very sensitive to criticism, no matter what one says they are "rude" in his/her world.

Good luck with getting Apple to say anything official, their standard approach to information release is via ADC or carefully leaked information in which they can then deny as "rumor or speculation" or not (if it suits their needs). Good example is OS4.1 Beta 3 -- it's ok to let out the information it "fixes" the 3G problem, but Apple can deny if they like -- gives them full flexibility.

But it appears they have lost A LOT of potential customers and existing upgrade customers because of all the issues. I was just at a Verizon store getting a Droid X activated, and she noticed my old 3G iPhone (EVO 4G is on order) and indicated she's had A LOT of now ex-iPhone customers and heard the "horror" stories.

Apple have released a new 12 core MacPro, so that's a big plus!! Not ALL bad at Apple.

Ok first, im not against anybody wanting this to be fix, i support all you say even tho i have no issue with the os, maybe lucky if you want, there lots of people with no issue and maybe they dont post nothing here. Second i have read tons of people with issue and of course they have to make an statement and they have all the right to be helped, i do not have stocks in apple or work there, so i dont gain nothing if apple get more rich or bankrupt,im just a consumer, my post began cuz many people are not like you setting a problem, they just insult people tryin to help or talk **** of att, steve jobs, engenieers, pr etc. my point was that doesnt solve nothing and makes people just tired of searching for a fix. and to be real, bad press and droid comments are out of line dont you think? i mean a havent read anything about blackberry, weird huh? i get you and yes its frustrating no word from apple

Flac, you are correct. I just stuck to the facts of the case without deviation.
The facts in evidence are; iOS4.x is not compatible with 3g/3gs phones. There is no disputing this fact and I bet I can find a jury of 12 iPhone users (plus a few alternates) that will concur and rule iOS4 guilty!

My office mates also updated their 3g/3gs'(they are NOT on this forum) and they too are having the same issues I am. That's how this started with me... While at the water cooler, I said "are you guys noticing that after the update......." Everyone concurred. So I bet there is even a silent majority of iPhone users who are not speaking out about this issues.

As for switching to another company. Each person must make that decision for themselves. For me, I was able to roll back to 3.x and am quite happy. Don't fix what ain't broken. Also, very happy with my now 3 year old iMAC, my new Mac Book and 5 year old iMac G5.
