Aug 12, 2010 12:08 PM in response to Xplorer77by lusciatti,Still waiting for some kind of fix for my 3G iPhone. It has been running pretty well lately with 4.0.1 but there are still some slow times! It would be nice if Apple could at least acknowledge the problem and let us know a fix is in the works and when it is scheduled to be available. Just give us a little somethin'. -
Aug 12, 2010 12:11 PM in response to Xplorer77by twrevis,Well, here we are at iOS4.0.2 and still getting snubbed by Apple.
Seriously, if the 3G fixes were as simply as dual hard reboots, turning of Spotlight Indexing, etc., Apple themselves would simply be telling people about these things themselves (instead of people stumbling across them and others finding out about them via Google searches).
I find it hard to believe Apple didn't know about this when iOS4 was released. Either:
a.) they know about it and didn't care and let 3g/3gs owners load it anyway,
b.) they knew about it and thought it would be a good sales strategy for getting those folks to run out and trade up to iPhone4s, or
c.) they really had no idea
Any of the above represent inexcusable behavior by a company with a reputation for quality, reliability, and dependability like Apple. It's a huge stain.
Remember the "I'm a PC - I'm a Mac" commercials? Can't wait to see the "I'm an iPhone 3G/GS - I'm a Droid" commercials.

Aug 12, 2010 1:21 PM in response to twrevisby cliff,Hmmm, since the update is still being touted as being available for the 3G on the Apple site, I'll go with (A). -
Aug 12, 2010 2:18 PM in response to Xplorer77by Peter DiSalvo,Just want to throw my name in the hat...regrettably my iPhone 3 now ***** thanks to iOS 4. Only thing I like is ease of tethering. I tried following some of the steps to downgrade but two attempts failed. I will try more again. I also tried reset and that seemed to work for a while...but then seems like phone gets clogged up. Nope, not buying iPhone 4 until January, waiting to see if Verizon gets it. My inner geek cant help looking at the droid though I really dont want to go that way. Come on Apple admit this iOS4 was not made for iPhone 3 and give us a frickin' fix. -

In some surreal parallel universe, if people were iPhones, we are currently witnessing the mass euthanasia of all those of us over 40 regardless of physical or mental condition. iOS4 might have well been a virus for what it has done to us - overnight we have become sick, slow, forgetful, slurred, crippled and ready for the ground to open up for us. Landfill. Carbon footprint.
Make way for the next generation.
Yes, yes,
Spoke to some young thing from the Apple technical Dept. on the emerald isle today. She said that Apple WAS aware of our issues and HAD got a team sweating away working on it (not sure if the team in question were software developers or attorneys) but hey-ho.
She had some pre-prepared hoops for me to jump through (she was reading from a list) that were 'workarounds' (she was very clear that I was NOT to refer to them as 'fixes'), that's kind of the equivalent of applying pressure to a wound as opposed to curing a disease.
20+ years as an Apple zealot and you manage to alienate me more and more each day you MUPPET of a company. -
Aug 12, 2010 4:51 PM in response to Xplorer77by usakiwi,I have the same problem.
EVERYTHING is soooooo slow on my 3G after the update to iOS4, that Its now a major effort to even think of opening up any app, send a text, use google maps, open the calendar, etc.
Now a new problem!!!!!!!! I get a message that I have no SIM card available!!!!!!
I've had to restore my phone twice in the last month.
What the F!!!! -

Aug 13, 2010 1:45 AM in response to pgirolamby step_andy,Even Micro$oft has learned that certain hardware can run only certain software and are offering operating system and apps with a downgrade option. -
Aug 13, 2010 1:50 AM in response to Xplorer77by jammerking,Apple please update the os4 so the phone works at least like before - this is bad! Or make a official downgrade to os 3! waste of my time:-( -
Aug 13, 2010 5:44 AM in response to Xplorer77by Jonty71,Well, after a couple of gruelling months, today my new iP4 has arrived from Apple. The 3G model has been reset and then I will get rid of it. Hopefully the iP4 will end the problems I had with the 3G model since the OS4.0 updates and give me back a fully functional phone. -
Aug 13, 2010 6:46 AM in response to Xplorer77by BenedictW,I would just like to add my voice to the growing crowd - after updating my iPhone 3G to iOS 4 it has become incredibly slow.
I was just about to (frustratingly) downgrade it a couple of days ago when iOS 4.0.2 was released, so I have given that the benefit of the doubt. I realise that the release notes said nothing of any fixes for 3G iPhones, but simply a security patch to do with PDFs, but given Apples apparent silence acknowledging the problem, I hoped they might just be silent about fixing it.
My phone seems slightly faster since the update, but I think someone said elsewhere that it might just be due to having fresh firmware (if that is the right word) installed on the phone. If it grinds to a halt again in a week's time, I'll post back here.
I am bitterly disappointed with Apple - the main reason I use their products is that I don't have the time to faff around working out how to fix the products that I have bought and use as recommended, and my past experience with Apple was that their products did 'just work'. I am very wary of 'downgrading' my iPhone because I inherently do not like using third-party workarounds because it tends to lead to a lot of excess faff just to be able to start using the product as it was intended.
Unfortunately, it seems Apple is forcing this upon many of its customers. I've just been helping my mother set up her iMac, and I hope that this won't prove to be a big mistake when an automatic update renders it useless for her in a years time. -
Aug 13, 2010 6:47 AM in response to Xplorer77by twrevis,Here's my last assessment on this issue....
Apple iOS4 = Microsoft Vista
Same type of blunder. Both had foreknowledge (no way they didn't).
I'd bet the Google Android folks are absolutely LOVING this! They've GOT to be reaping a HUGE windfall in new Android based phones! Hmmm.... think I'll run out and buy up some Google stock.... -
Aug 13, 2010 9:30 AM in response to Xplorer77by JG1234,I have successfully "Downgraded" my iPhone 3G to the last working version of the iPhone operating system v. 3.1.4
The good news is that the phone now performs just as expected with a noticeable increase in speed and performance as compared to iOS-4. I followed the instructions found on lifehacker showing both written instructions and a short video on how to complete the "downgrade".
The bad news is the phone is still vulnerable to any of the known bugs/hacks that have been addressed in recent iOS updates, notably the PDF hack recently patched in iOS4.2. So, note to self, don't open any PDF documents on my iPhone 3G unless I am certain they are from a Safe source.
I'm looking forward to an iPhone 3G compatible version of iOS-4, but until then, I'm sticking with iPhone version 3.1.4 -
Aug 13, 2010 10:55 AM in response to Xplorer77by rstoppiello,Ive given up hope of a fix. I was trying to use the iPod this morning and crashed for 5 minutes straight. That did it for me.
Rebuilding my iPhone on 3.1.3 now thanks to lifehacker link.
Expect me to never purchase from you, or bother you again, as this will be my last apple product.
