Aug 13, 2010 11:48 AM in response to Xplorer77by Hawk_Eye,My warranty ran out on my 3G and with such bad performance I've jailbroken to try and help me understand the issue with comparing against a friends 3GS iPhone which is also jailbroken.
I'm not promoting jailbreaking in anyway before I get any abuse - I have done this to se if there is anything obvious I can do to stop the problem.
What I have found is that even after a complete reboot on the 3G there was only 30MB of memory free and whenever an app is loaded this drops to 8-11MB. Coming out of the app only appears to recover 10MB thus showing there is some sort of memory leak. Given that the 3G has a reported 128MB some 100MB is used for the iOS 4 and phone functionality.
The 3GS however has 256MB ram and after a complete restart had over 100MB free and only dropping to 90MB with multiple apps running.
The problem with the 3G would appear to be the lack of ram and the iOS not efficiently using it.
After playing with an iPhone 4 and seeing the performance improvement (even on a 3GS) I suspect I'll be giving up the 3G and moving forward.
I feel sorry though for those who thought they were getting a good deal when they signed up to a 2 year contract back in May on an 8GB 3G iPhone!! -

Ive given up hope of a fix.
My take is that whatever fix there is will be in the 4.1 update and appear at the iPod reveal in mid September. Since the overall update focus will be on iOS4 and iPads, there will be no mention of it fixing 3G issues even if it does. With all that's going on with Apple, this 3G fiasco is just a blip/non issue in the overall scheme of their corporate strategy. -
Aug 13, 2010 12:58 PM in response to rstoppielloby rottenapple7,Out of major frustration, I am posting for the first time. As everyone on this board, I am having a terrible time with my 3G. Although my phone is 2 years old I cannot blame the problems on age. My phone worked beautifully until the fatal update. At this time my phone is more of a hassle to use than a pay phone, and I am tired of the slow operation, dropped calls, crashing and freezing. I keep hearing about how phenomenal the "4" is, but I do not want to upgrade just because my phone isn't working as well as it did before the update. We consumers have hit the wall where Apple is concerned, and sadly they are the victors given the record sales that their new model generated. I know that I have options - not only is the droid an amazing phone, Sprint's service is much less expensive than AT&T - but I keep hoping that Apple comes to task and remedies this situation. My posting concerns are the same as everyone else's, but the time finally came for me to voice my opinion.

Aug 13, 2010 5:05 PM in response to Xplorer77by DiesArma,I updated my Iphone 3G to iOS4 and it has been nothing but terrible. I upgraded to iOS4.1 I noticed my phone began having trouble from time to time locating its iTunes library. I've tried to downgrade my phones per the instructions on the internet but I still operate OS X 10.4 and recboot isn't compatible with that version. I've been wanting to upgrade my OS software for awhile but I really don't have the extra cash to spend right now to upgrade. With no fix in sight what am I to do? I shouldn't have to shell out money to fix a problem Apple created. They shouldn't have released iOS4 for the 3G if it was this bad for the phone. I was perfectly happy with the previous phone. I hope Apple will do its customers right and provide a solution for this problem. -
Aug 13, 2010 10:37 PM in response to DiesArmaby cliff,I've had a usable 3G with iOS4 not the like what some have seen with the pausing, dropped calls etc. Mine was mostly just slower and 'sticky". I did "all the above" in terms of fixes and thought I could wait for an update, but finally went back to 3.1.3 tonight. What an incredible difference. This is the way the phone is supposed to be. -
Aug 14, 2010 4:29 AM in response to cliffby Dennis van Spanje,so it is a non- functioning phone with the latest security update or a good- functioning flow with security problems...

Aug 14, 2010 12:38 AM in response to Hawk_Eyeby Hawk_Eye,I've now dug out my old iPhone 2G for comparison and carried out the same jailbreak.
Running on 3.1.3 on the iPhone 2G the free memory available is 38MB when using Safari only (plus whatever the JB stuff is using). On my 3G iOS4.0.1 browsing the same site I'm down to 7MB.
There is a serious memory management issue in iOS4 which needs addressing which is probably happening on all versions of the iPhone but not noticed as they have at least twice the amount if ram.
Hopefully Apple have spotted the memory management issue and are addressing in 4.1 -
Aug 14, 2010 5:24 AM in response to Hawk_Eyeby n3nto,That was quite good. I frequently get 2 to 4 MB. I was updating an app and had a look at how much memory I had left and it was 2 MB, now if by chance someone called me, the phone would have frozen completely.
Its a pity that such a great phone has been paralyzed like this by a software update. -
Aug 14, 2010 6:51 AM in response to n3ntoby cliff,I found that with 4.0.2 I would see 6-8 megs when using FreeMemory that would then jump up as it was cleared. I'm seeing over 40 clear now in 3.1.3 without having to do anything. -
Aug 14, 2010 9:37 AM in response to rottenapple7by Encryptionist,I agree with you. You have the option of calling Apples customers public relation, consumer relation (can't recall exact department) they put in an appointment for me at the Apple store and they replaced my 3G no charge.
Your second option is to search this forum or the Internet and follow the steps on down grading your phone back to iOS firmware 3.1.3, there a lot of success stories of people who completed the task and are happy once again with their 3G phones.
