Q: Iphone 3G slow after update to IOS4

The upgrade to IOS4 took forever but eventualy was completed succesfully.
But the iphone is very slow with IOS4. It doesn't work as smooth as it used to be. Also new applications such as the iBook application are very slow, doesn't respond smooth on screentaps etc. Who has the same experience?
I'm thinking about going back to version 3.1.3 because IOS4 doesn't add anything to improve the user experience on the iPhone 3G.

I hope Apple will listen to their iphone users and will release an update soon for iOS4 which improves the performance on older iPhones.

I agree with you. You have the option of calling Apples customers public relation, consumer relation (can't recall exact department) they put in an appointment for me at the Apple store and they replaced my 3G no charge.

Your second option is to search this forum or the Internet and follow the steps on down grading your phone back to iOS firmware 3.1.3, there a lot of success stories of people who completed the task and are happy once again with their 3G phones.

I just want to raise my hand and say I am having this problem too. I was looking at the roll-back solution. It looks a bit scary. I don't want to risk having my phone not work, or lose data. It would seem the instructions are more clear for Mac users.

    Good Luck everyone!

so far as I can tell, it does seem to be the case that only some are affected - but what would make teh difference ? How about available space vs capacity (as in Settings / General / About / Available & Capacity) - mine reads 880MB vs 6.9GB - ie: getting near full ... wonder if that's the case for all of us having problems ?

My iPhone 3G has not been jailbroken, has no apps installed other than the apps that came with it, has no songs loaded, no videos, and only a few pics. It was as basic as they come....Ran great too....UNTIL I updated to iOS 4.0.1. Now I have most of the problems that have been indicated in this thread.
    Capacity indicates: 6.9GB
    Available indicates: 6.6GB

I dont know why you keep insisting that only a few are affected as I dont know anyone with a 3G that is not complaining about it.

The moment I have some time on my hands I am going to time it doing simple day to day stuff and then post a video. (like others have)

Just a moment ago I timed 16 seconds to open a weather app and display todays weather (accuweather) the norm is round 10-11 seconds, weather pro takes around 13 seconds, messaging takes from 3 to 7 seconds to open and another 3 to actually start writing a new message. I timed 24 seconds for google earth to start working. Bloomberg 13 seconds, a well known newspaper 12 seconds etc etc I could go on and on and I am not even going into the games because most crash after a while. When you want to close one of theses apps it usually takes three clicks of the Home button.

Quite unbearable when your in a rush.

not sure I'm insisting - it's just the logic of the situation ... there are a lot of 3Gs out there, and yet the paper's & magazines & 'net are not full of the problems we're seeing ... ... ergo, everyone can't be affected. Added to which, speaking with someone over the water, it seems they have friends who are & who aren't. Plus I know Apple are looking at it, did test, were surprised by what's happened, and do not yet have an answer to why & what to do about it ... so, who knows, we're as affected & annoyed & frustrated & aggravated (grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrh) by it as anyone !

These last few months have been a fiasco for Apple, which comes with the territory when you try to go from idealistic upstart to monolithic corporate master of the universe. It's a sad fact, but to gain market share, something has to give. Whether it's OS security (re: exploitation of iPad security weaknesses), or costumer loyalty (re: this current thread), or even integrity in your corporate culture (re: Apple manager and his million dollar kickbacks), this is the byproduct of Apple's never ending pursuit of Microsoft's piece of the pie. Unfortunately, they cater to a costumer base that is much more rabid, loyal and self-conscious than any Microsoft user could ever be and lately they have really either forgotten that or hope that by ignoring it, we'll eventually give in for the greater good of Saint Jobs.

Don't get me wrong...I don't believe this upgrade issue with 3G is by any means a cataclysmic event. It's obnoxious, to say the least, and the lack of official response or acknowledgement from on high is glaring, but the sun will still set tonight and rise tomorrow. Of course, whether you'll be able to catch the moment with your now-pathetically-slow-to-load-and-take-a-*******-picture camera is a completely different story.

Apple bit a pretty big and embarrassing bullet with the whole Antennagate B.S. They should simply do the right thing and quietly offer an official downgrade to 3.1 for 3G users and simply live with the fact that we aren't all going to jump onto the 4G wagon all at once no matter how much they try to push. We get it... you can't shoehorn an OS into an ill-equipped vessel....just as Microsoft and all those pitch-fork wielding Vista customers learned years ago.

Thanks for the feedback form Link.
I sent one more mail to apple to request an Ios4 with better performance.
No difference seen with iOS 4.0.2

No way to go back to Ios 3 as most apps update required ios4 and not work in ios3 ..

I am sure someone could explain this better than I can.
Many people have 2 year contracts and opt for an upgrade to have the latest thing on the market. Many just don't come to these forums because they either dont have time, dont know about them or cant be bothered.
Other ex Iphone 3G users handed down their phones to family members (children / wives / others that dont know any better!) or just sold them. Some moved on to Android/other OS phones. Magazines dont really care about a two year old phone because that does not sell magazines or clicks at the Blogs/forums. The other press just want to be in with Apple because the name helps sales so they would not look for anything bad to say about them.
Apple I am sure wants you to upgrade so they will not make life any easier for you... I would suggest maybe they would either make it more difficult or just not care enough.
In an age where you should be more ethically responsible/greener I dont think that keeping a phone for two or three years is a bad thing.

    conclusion: Were pretty much alone.

yep, agree & disagree ... basically, we're dumbfounded, not only that it happened, but by the response, including the lack of it, and their continued response ... is this the company, the same company, that we've known for so long ? What's happened, what's going on, have we become disconnected, have we gone mad ... ????

Ok ... I was miserable with my iPhone for the whole month since the software upgrade..the other day i restored my phone to factory settings like it was a brand new phone and it seems to be working ALOT better. It's not the same but it's worlds better! I also took off alot of my music which is ridiculous that we would have to do but it's sped up so much since then so even though I think this whole thing is absurd until I can afford the new iPhone, this is working a lot better. Try it

Please report back in a week or so. I did the same restore and as mentioned it was a lot better for a little while, then it gets bogged down again. I believe a previous post about low level of RAM once a few apps are running and a likely memory leak are the issue. Regrettably I think the better performance you are experiencing now will diminish in time.

Thanks for your input...I wish I could read allllll the posts so excuse me if I repeat things but there are thousands of posts and I just don't have the time.

How could they just ignore all of us? Apple literally told me there was nothing they could do for me but send me a new one with the same exact software?? Are you kidding? You broke my phone that I just bought in January for 150 bucks and you won't do ANYTHING to fix the problem? It's just not right. Period. Bottom Line. Give us all 3gs or fix the problem or SOMETHING but to ignore it!!? Even if I could afford to go out and buy the new iphone 4 - Why would I?? The antenna is all messed up so it needs a bumper to function??? This is almost like a crazy joke!!! What can we do? There are THOUSANDS of us...

As a Mac user for >15 years and iPhone user since day one...I must say that I am profoundly disappointed at almost all aspects of my 3G after "upgrading" to 4.0. I agree with the comment that it's just about only good for a phone these days. Patience is a virtue, but this is stupid! Almost everything crawls or worse. From the camera access time to SMS typing, this is about the worst I've ever seen an Apple product perform. Frankly I am surprised despite all the views on this post that more hasn't been done or more noise hasn't been made to get Steve & Co. focused on how many of his vast legions are disappointed beyond belief. Sure the 4G is sweet and but we 3G'ers are in a death-grip of our own with a really really slow OS4 plus our ATT coverage quality.

Folks at the Stores say 'yes, we know' and 'hang in there'. Clearly this OS4 on the 3G is a >death-grip quality issue. I hope the community will continue to pressure Apple to fix this problem ASAP.
