Q: Iphone 3G slow after update to IOS4

The upgrade to IOS4 took forever but eventualy was completed succesfully.
But the iphone is very slow with IOS4. It doesn't work as smooth as it used to be. Also new applications such as the iBook application are very slow, doesn't respond smooth on screentaps etc. Who has the same experience?
I'm thinking about going back to version 3.1.3 because IOS4 doesn't add anything to improve the user experience on the iPhone 3G.

I hope Apple will listen to their iphone users and will release an update soon for iOS4 which improves the performance on older iPhones.

Wow, I hate to be just another angry user of the Iphone 3G because of IOS4, but I am. The most disappointing part is that I absolutely loved this phone, and now it's practically a brick. I can barely make calls with it due to the way it crawls. Brutal! Apple, seriously, what the **** are you doing? Fix this!

After months of 'making do' with a sluggish, unresponsive IOS4-upgraded 3G iPhone, I finally got round to downgrading to 3.13. I may have lost saved text messages and notes (I had backed-up the important stuff) and I'm prepared for certain apps to no longer function but I still feel liberated. My phone is actually usable now and my only regret is that I didn't rollback the OS sooner. The whole operation took less than an hour. If you're umming and ahhing about the procedure, I'd say the benefits far outweigh the pitfalls. Follow the instructions carefully and you'll be fine.

My advice: don't put it off any sooner, downgrade now (how surreal does that sound?) and save yourself the stress and frustration of IOS4. Thank you lifehacker.com.

As a long-time apple user I have to add my view that the quality control appears to be going down the pan. Perhaps the company's just making too many products, and is getting too big too soon to cope but the brand is suffering. I was caught up in the hype of iphone 4 and the latest IOS problems only made me want to upgrade to a new phone even more, especially as my contract has expired. However, my recent experience means I now have no problem resisting the urge to line apple's pockets further until the QA and support improves. Whatever happened to the notion that apple stuff 'just worked'?

    Just about worked more like.

I dont know why you keep insisting that only a few are affected ...

You point to one post where one particular person claims to not be having a problem, besides the fact that the poster has one total post, what do you gain by trying to convince everyone here that not all people are having problems?

No matter how you spin this debacle, there are a lot of people that are having problems. Are you suggesting that we shouldn't voice our concerns, and hopefully get a fix from Apple?

If you don't have a problem with your 3G, then why are you posting here? Seriously. Do you get paid to post?

Hey, thanks ! We do have the problem ... we are equally frustrated by it ... but just trying to understand why Apple are behaving as they are in the face of it ... not everyone has it, and those who don't would be very unlikely to post (so finding an example will be rare) ... !

It would be great if everyone with the problem would give appropriate (short & to the point) feedback via the place that will ensure their response gets logged & actioned :

    http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html

it's been going on so long, we've actually fed-back twice, and written once besides ...

I started a new job today and a company offered me two choices for a phone - Nokia or iPhone.

    Having a crippled 3G, I chose Nokia.

Apple, pull your finger, or more and more people will be turning away from you.

    Christopher....

You are wrong about the net not being full of people complaining about the 3G and iOS4. The net - including these forums - ARE full of people complaining about it. Just Google "iOS3 3G complaints" and you'll find get 2.4M hits! For crying out loud, even the Wall Street Journal did a story about this!!!

If you think it's fine with your 3G, great. But don't try to sugar coat this for Apple - it's a disaster on the scale of Windows Vista.

I moved from Wibdows mobile 1 year ago because I was bored to reinstall ROMs in my former HTC diamond to find one at least workable. I signed a 2 years contract with Movistar in Spain in order to get a iPhone 3G. In that time and during this year I was very happy with it. I never did jailbreak because I think the price policy in app store in good and to pay 0.79€ for a app is ok.

Suddenly Mr. Jobs said to us that we can upgrade to iOS 4 because they limited the features to assure a good user experience. I think this is false and the only thing they though it was to allow us in order to make our 3G slower than before and then push us to buy new iPhone 4. This is not fear. I can understand that apple is a company and they should win money but I this is not the way. A CEO cannot say in a presentation that they are limiting the features too force people to upgrade to new devices, because I dont't want to upgrade, I just want to enjoy my 3G with 3.1.4 and also to enjoy the apps I paid, of course.

If I don't get this I will never pay any app anymore, I so sorry.

Mr. $Jobs$ pls let us to downgrade to 3.1.4. Officially, of course and recognize your big big error.

I finally decided to create an account here -- just to add my opinion to this hot topic. I remember hearing Steve Jobs say that he likes hard numbers. Well Mr. Jobs, this topic is approaching a quarter of a million views -- and the problems are very real.

Fellow iPhone 3G users, consider this fact: Apple has made a WHOPPING 4 different models of the iPhone. (excluding storage capacity variations)

For that reason alone, you can't convince me that their "quality assurance" team wasn't aware that the iPhone 3G would slow to a crawl with the iOS 4.0 update.

What gets me is that to this day Apple is still encouraging 3G users to update to iOS 4. (and no official downgrade back to 3.1.3)

Oddly enough, my wife has an iPod touch that we purchased in mid-2008. She recently upgraded it to iOS 4 and it works great.

Considering that a good percentage of the iOS 4 improvements don't work on the 3G anyway, we would benefit from a stripped down version (like they did with the iPod Touch.)

My thought is that this is Apple's form of "Planned Obsolescence", since the 3G is already 2 years old (and most contracts will soon be up.) Apple (and AT&T) want you to get the newest iPhone -- and more importantly, commit for another 2 years with AT&T, as they will lose millions of customers when the iPhone becomes available on another carrier.

As for me, I upgraded alright. My personal cell is now a Droid X on Verizon. (I still have the iPhone 3G as a business cell.)

Hi - yep, there are lots & lots & lots, but it seems it's not everyone - some 3Gs are bad, some are OK, with iOS4, it seems - and no, I'm not trying to excuse Apple, just acknowledge that maybe it's not simple to fix ... how would you explain that some are & some are not affected ? Apple are way, way overdue for fixing this, but I'm sure they're on to it, and it there's no cure yet, then maybe it's not simple to do ! Goodness knows why they're handling this way, let's hope all becomes clear (in every sense) before too long, before we've all given up & gone back to Symbian (nightmares) or Windows Mobile (yawn) ...

    replying to myself.

OK - I followed a suggestion and it fixes all my problems:

Downloaded latest iOS4.x version but did not install it.
    Synced to iTunes
Did an iTunes restore from that sync.
Rebooted to the new iOS4- all OK - all apps working.

Shame I had to do it twice and shame we were not alerted to do a "clean" install rather than incremental update.

Good luck, but you will likely find it to be a temporary fix. The install via restore feature is how I upgraded my iphone 3G to IOS4. I have the exact same slowdowns and memory leaks as everyone else. Every fix so far is temporary.

    Hi

I just wanted to add my voice to this.

I am sorry to have to say that I am so disappointed with my 'new' iPhone 3G that I am going to jump ship to HTC.

Until recently my phone was perfect, it took the first photo of my son 2 years ago and since then has done everything I need. Which, admittedly is very little, but I am not that keen on games, I don't watch music videos and I can barely explain what Twitter is.

It was past the end of the contract so cost me very little.

It worked beautifully with my MacBook Pro and iMac.

Then something happened, someone decided to put iOS4 on it and it is now almost useless, it is slow, it hangs, it pauses, it freezes and it does all of this without any obvious new benefit. More importantly, it is just not reliable enough to use as my work phone and I cannot use it when I am on-call.

I am so cross about this that I cannot bring myself to buy another iPhone, much less do I want to pay the £1,000 that it will cost over 18 months. I was very happy with my existing iPhone and didn't want to upgrade, I had paid for it after all. Now someone else has broken it and there is nothing I can do about it.

Apple has never broken any of my previous Macs just because a new one came out.

I've emailed various people at Apple about this but no one has bothered to reply.

    Cheerio

Add 2 iPhone 3G phones that are slow to the list.

Rebooting every day to get speed... but it doesn't help.
Already reset, backup'ed, restored.... nothing helps, at least not noticeable after a week of working with it again.

I trust apple to fix this a.s.a.p.... or let people downgrade.
But hey: a message here is good for the signal to apple: yeah: it's really slow! (unworkable slow)
