Q: Iphone 3G slow after update to IOS4

The upgrade to IOS4 took forever but eventualy was completed succesfully.
But the iphone is very slow with IOS4. It doesn't work as smooth as it used to be. Also new applications such as the iBook application are very slow, doesn't respond smooth on screentaps etc. Who has the same experience?
I'm thinking about going back to version 3.1.3 because IOS4 doesn't add anything to improve the user experience on the iPhone 3G.

I hope Apple will listen to their iphone users and will release an update soon for iOS4 which improves the performance on older iPhones.

My 3g has many of the same problems others are facing. Here's the info:
    1) My phone is NOT jailbroken
    2) It worked fine and snappy before iOS 4.0
    3) 4.0.1 upgrade made no difference
    4) Slow responsiveness (5-10 seconds) for opening apps, typing, and searching.
    5) Turned off all spotlight search options and did not help much.
    6) must resort to hard resets to temporarily fix problem
    7) Tried "double hard reset" to no avail.
    8) Apple needs to allow me to downgrade. I feel as though I'm being forced out of a perfectly good phone. There is no need to upgrade to new model as it was working fine before iOS4.0

    I hope you replied:

"You mean, you work at Apple support, and haven't seen one of the longest topics on Apple's own forum about the biggest problem that is plaguing 3G owners? And none of your supervisors have spoken to any of you about that very long topic which is constantly at the top of all the topics about the 3G? So you're saying that basically even though you are called Apple Support, you actually do not specialize in supporting people by doing your best at being aware of the problems that your clients have with your products? You more or less try to ignore your core tasks as a support unit? Interesting."

I wonder what her response would've been.

Don't want to wait for Apple any longer to take action, I don't think they will.
I went back to 3.1.3, the lifehacker way and it's flying again

My phone is pretty much worthless since the update. My contract is up with AT&T and I think I'm going to go move to a Droid. I loved my iPhone when it functioned properly. I don't want to go back with AT&T for two more years and I'm less than impressed with Apple at this point. I almost think they did it deliberately to push 3G users to purchase a new 4th generation. I also couldn't believe that they wanted me to pay per minute for support to help get this resolved. Heading out tomorrow to see what the Droid can offer. I miss my working iPhone a lot.

Apple tech support acknowledge the problem and they advise that the 3g is just too slow to handle IOS4. So what do we do? Do we have any recourse? Support advise that you cannot go back to 3.x They could not tell me if this issue would be addressed. What a joke to treat loyal Apple customers like this. What do we do? Are they forcing us to upgrade to Iphone 4.0. Do I hear Android knocking on the door?

this issue is the last straw.

There's four iphone 3's in my family, two macbooks for the college kids and an imac for the wife. Except for my SLOOOWWW iphone, I'm still PC, thank god.

I will NEVER buy another apple product for anybody in this family again.

Today's Apple Computer is the Microsoft of the 1990s.

I've been watching these forums and this thread in particular for some time hoping that an "official" fix would appear but so far nothing in sight.

I'm one of the fortunate that did not update my 3G when prompted. I'd learned my lesson on Apple software updates with iTunes so now I always wait a month or so and follow the forums to see what new problems arise with each update and wait for Apple to release a fix.

I'd love to be able to update my phone to the latest OS but there's not a chance in **** until some positive resolution presents itself. I'm only six months into a new contract and there's no way I'm springing the extra money to upgrade to the iPhone 4 yet.

It's a crime that Apple has not publically recognised the problem and in fact continues to promote the software update on their site as being compatible with 3G phones. I've read elsewhere that there is a beta 3 version of a fix being tested but who knows when that will see public release and if it'll even work properly.

Don't know if this is good news or not, but I went to the Apple Store tonight and the sales person working with me stated that they are aware of the issue and by their estimates, three out of every four 3g/3gS iPhones are having serious issues with IOS4.0.x

So, obviously the voices are getting heard, it would be nice if Apple could throw a bone back and at least ack the messages being sent - at least let us know there is a plan... (maybe there isn't).

Went to my local genius bar and the 'genius' behind the counter had never heard of this problem!
Nothing more to add but thanks to all the REAL geniuses who have offered advice and possible solutions.

Apple's censors removed my earlier post trashing their customer care and hoping for a Verizon iPhone.
Why don't they actually just make downgrading to 3.1.3 legal so they don't have to take down our posts when we suggest doing it otherwise?

Apple, you are losing customer loyalty over this, fix the problem!!!

BTW, I am happily running 3.1.3 after living with an iBrick for the past month.

I am new to the forum and thought I was going crazy after the new download.Thankfully I see I am not the only one with issues. My main problem is the Calendar which takes ages to kick in.Same with text messages.Overall the phone is really slow.
Frankly,I think Apple should be ashamed of themselves. There are millions of 3G users out there now struggling with this upgrade.Apple's silence is deafening. It is unacceptable.Any suggestions on how to deluge them with complaints?

Apple's behaviour over this issue is outrageous and unacceptable. My use of my Apple product has been affected by a software update from apple installed without any warning of the consequence via itunes. No opportunity to roll back an OS which is presumeably designed for the more capable iphone4. Apple store techies just say sorry but tough - nothing can be done. Another instance of corporate arrogance or a cynical attempt to force us out to buy a new iphone. OS 4.02 is now released should I install or will it make things worse and why should i even have to ask? Who needs a virus when the company doe the job for you. Urgent action is required NOW

Just chiming in to add my name to the ever-growing list of unhappy OS4 on iPhone 3G users. Same issues as everyone else--slow, sluggish, stalls, over heating, short battery, almost useless.

Just adding my name to the list of those who are now living the slow life.

My iPhone has made me appreciate life more; Now I enjoy actually admiring views while I wait for my camera to load. My iPhone 3G is well and truly secure as the slide to unlock function generally doesn't work for the first 10 seconds. I am not annoyed by pesky calls as my phone locks up while trying to answer them. And I am sure that I save battery power due to the amount of times I have to hard reset my phone.

Yes, I have tried every solution written in this thread, and I have read the whole 76 pages! I suspect there is already more written in this thread than in "Of Mice and Men".

Anyway, fingers crossed that one of the new betas is actually meant to alleviate our problems, but until then, I look forward to this thread reaching a quarter of a million views.

Same with me. The restore and reload technique helped the situation. It's not quite as bad as before the update but still have to wait minutes for the mail app to respond. I often have to start apps 2 or 3 times before the load with out crashing.

I'm recommending to my friends on older devices, who haven't moved to OS4, to stay away from it. As I started up iTunes this morning it notified me about a new update. It just says it is a security update to fix a leak with pdf files but I wonder if the performance improves. If it does then it confirms that apple doesn't like to talk about problems that their products have.

It seems like Apple and Jobs are starting to get the Microsoft God mentality disease.

Antenna Problem??? What antenna problem?? It's not a big deal until you waste peoples time rying to explain that there isn't a problem.
