Q: Iphone 3G slow after update to IOS4

The upgrade to IOS4 took forever but eventualy was completed succesfully.
But the iphone is very slow with IOS4. It doesn't work as smooth as it used to be. Also new applications such as the iBook application are very slow, doesn't respond smooth on screentaps etc. Who has the same experience?
I'm thinking about going back to version 3.1.3 because IOS4 doesn't add anything to improve the user experience on the iPhone 3G.

I hope Apple will listen to their iphone users and will release an update soon for iOS4 which improves the performance on older iPhones.

    Plug into iTunes
Double click on iPhone in iTunes.
Change phone name to today's date.
Option click on iPhone and perform a sync.
Option click on iPhone and perform a backup.
Option click and click restor from backup and see if your phone with new name(today's date) is in the list, do nothing .

Now cancel out of that window .
Make sure you have properly downloaded the new os4.02.
Instead of hitting update, which millions of people did and Apple didn't tell us not to, hit restore. This will wipe all data on the iPhone, and resetting essentially erasing all data on the iPhone.
Next, after this long and boring process, remember not to be in a rush. The software is very sophisticated, let it do it's job. After the iPhone has restored it's firmware and os4.02, let the phone startup and connect to the cellular network, do not unplug phone at all yet.
Most restore mistake are users being too impatient and unplugging the phone during installs, and this corrupts the install and the phone will never work right.
Now your iPhone thinks it just came out of the box new. Leav it alone.
Now option click the iPhone in iTunes and select restore from backup, a list appears, choose the new iPhone name, (the date) I had you change it to and select it.
Your iTunes will now put back all of your music, text messeges and contacts .you may have to resync iTunes after the restore from backup.
The only other thing you may have to redo or reinput is your wifi passwords and your voicemail password.
    This fix worked for me.

    Hello,
FOR ALL OF YOU OUT THERE HAVING IPHONE 3G PROBLEMS WITH OS4.02, PLEASE LISTEN CLOSELY.
ALL OF THE POSTS I HAVE READ INVOLVED """""UPGRADE""""""".
THIS IS THE PROBLEM. YOU NEED NOT DO THE """""""""UPGRADE"""""""",
BUT RATHER A FULL BLOWN RESET/RESTORE/ERASE ENTIRE DEVICE AND LAY DOWN THE NEW OPERATING SYSTEM. I GROW FRUSTRATED GETTING EMAILS FROM USERS QUESTIONING MY METHOD AND BASICALLY CALLING ME A LIER.

"I DON'T WORK FOR APPLE COMPUTER". I HAVE BEEN A USER OF APPLE PRODUCTS SINCE 1989. IF THE USERS EMAILING ME CONTINUE TO COMPLAIN WITH THEIR "UPGRADE", TRY DOING A RESET/RESTORE/RESTORE FROM BACKUP, THEN TELL ME IT DOESN'T WORK.

THE IPHONE 3G IS THE BEST PHONE THEY HAVE EVER MANUFACTURED. OS 4.02 WORKS PERFECTLY ON AN IPHONE 3G. And secondly to the poster who wants to see video, send me a link or a place I can post it, so I will stop getting ridiculous posts from you.

    Remove all of your content.
    wipe the device.
    restore from a good backup.
Your problem with os4.02 may not be with the software running the hardware, but a corrupted backup.
Try backing up and syncing again, and try restoring from a fast computer like a 2.33 or greater intel processor with lots of ram. The iphone is plauged with problems that occur from users putting too much data on them. Memory is a function of performance on the iphone. the memory is static, not rotational. the memory on the iphone can be severly compromised if you pile it in. I have a 16gb iphone 3g, and it works perfectly with the new software now. The iphone 3g basically became a paperweight after an """""""upgrade""""", not to be confused with a restore. A restore wipes the device, meaning every "bit" of data is erased and when you lay down the new 0s 4.02 on your iphone 3g, it puts the data at the "head" of the memory . Basically after a restore and install, it puts the data in one large block. If you do an "upgrade it puts bits and bytes of data in different places. The iphone 3g now has become a super fragmented device, and the lack of builtin memory only makes the problem worse.
Stripping the device and laying down a new os is always the answer with any computing device. It places the os in one place, not all over the drive, making read write access faster and more efficient. If I put data in nNew york and you live in LA, it might take you longer to get it. But if you put data in Culver city and you live in LA, it will take less time to get it.
    GIGO

Can someone/anyone take this advice , try it, and if it doesn't work, try it again. It worked for me.

    thanks - one query :

option-clicking iPhone, not sure what that means- 'cos when we move the arrow to lie over iPhone's name in the column on the left of the iTunes window & option click, nothing happens ...

    ctrl-clicking brings-up a drop-down list, which includes syncs & backup & restore from backup, etc ...

sorry to be pedantic, but just want to get it straight, first ...

    Hello,
I do not represent Apple computer / nor do I work for them, I am just smarter then they are and figured out how to fix the problem. I am here to share my knowledge and experience with other frustrated users so they can fix their phones.
Apple bit my hand back in 2000, and now I watch them with one eye on my computer and another on the forums. Apple will never admit they have a problem.
Seriously, the most successful company in America admit they were wrong not giving instructions to users. I can hear it now at the next Keynote , ooops.

    Hello,
If you perform the restore as I have explained, your phone will be fine.
Worked for my iphone 3g with os 4.02.

Apple doen't care about you, they only care about selling units.
Read my posts about how to restore an iphone 3g to os 4.02 the proper way.
Apple will never post a solution. That is why i am here to help millions of people with their $400 iphone 3g phones. Ummmmmmmm, Apple made how many millions selling the iphone 3g, which made them the most powerful computer company on the planet. They sell waaaaaaaaayyyyyyyy more phones then computers. Selling phones makes money for Apple, they don't make much on computers, its the phones.
There is an estimated 600 million phones in America. Do you think Apple really cares about putting all of their time into educating customers on how to sync/backup/restore their phones, nooooooooooo.
That is why they have slick computer software engineers who think up ways to slow your phone down so you go buy a new one. If buying a new phone at $400 makes you happier, go right ahead. If you want your iphone 3g to actually work, read my posts.

A downgrade can solve the issue, but Apple will not support a device that has been "hacked" in a warranty situation.

A double hard reset is essentially the same as shutting down a computer and restarting it. Wont fix the problem, just reboots the device.
You must perform a restore as a new phone and reinstall the os fresh.
