Q: Iphone 3G slow after update to IOS4

The upgrade to IOS4 took forever but eventualy was completed succesfully.
But the iphone is very slow with IOS4. It doesn't work as smooth as it used to be. Also new applications such as the iBook application are very slow, doesn't respond smooth on screentaps etc. Who has the same experience?
I'm thinking about going back to version 3.1.3 because IOS4 doesn't add anything to improve the user experience on the iPhone 3G.

I hope Apple will listen to their iphone users and will release an update soon for iOS4 which improves the performance on older iPhones.

Also seeing the slow lag when launching apps; even core apps like Phone and SMS...very frustrating. I am not going to upgrade to an iPhone 4 if Apple doesn't demonstrate basic backward compatibility principles.

I also don't believe the OS 4 features offered to 3G are that stellar to begin with, as if there was a strategy to drive 3GS (mostly coming off of contract) to the new hardware. Seriously, why can't a 3G device show a picture behind the home screen????

I really want to like this product ... Love my iPad!

    Apple please fix this problem.
Since the time I have upgraded to OS4 my iPhone 3G that I used to boast about has started embarassing me. It's worst than working on MS Vista. Its slower than snail.. I cant do anything, I have tried the master re-boot many times, my calls hang, sms, all applications.. its just a mess.
Mr.Jobs can you please fix this problem, or provide an alternative to downgrade to OS3. I can promise, if this problem is not fixed soon.. you will have a lot of angry customers, you will lose ur loyal customers and no one will ever trust Apple products anymore.
    Frustrated customer..

Slllooooowwwww . . . Glacially slllooooowwwww . . . Pre-global warming glacially sssslllllooooowwwwww. I type in a word and the first letter expands and hangs. I continue typing in the word and then one by one, each letter subsequently ssllooowwllly falls into place. I've done the double hard reboot numerous times, and it is somewhat better for a short time. I use my phone for my business and it is exceedingly embarrassing to have to put the phone away and ask for a sticky note from my customers to write down an appointment. I've taken to carrying 3x5 cards clipped together.
I had ordered a iPhone 4 and my wife was to take the 3G. I can't pass this on to her and after viewing a video of the iPhone 4 reception issue last night, I can't risk dropping customer calls, I will cancel the iPhone 4 order today.
A very un-Apple like experience throughout.

Iphone 3g IOS4 update is now officially a Bad Apple =((((( it looks like $teve job$ is trying to get us to upgrade by bricking our otherwise functional phone. not happy jan! Mr jobs please do the honourable thing and provide us with a down grade update on itune. This alpha update should have been entirely optional with an option to revert if we are not happy with the performance.

But will they? I agree that all these" fixes" are a waste of time. It's a CPU and software issue that Apple has very little incentive to fix. They didn't inform 3G users of this problem because "it's time to upgrade" if you're carrying around one of those clunky 3G affairs. I do want to upgrade and the iPhone 4 sounds very good. I hate being tricked into it though. Apple makes great looking stuff but there're always flaws . The iPad for example has iffy wifi reception ( mine does and I'm not alone). The iphone makes random calls from the contact list ( never acknowledged by Apple). The apps used to crash all the time--that was hugely frustrating. You have to hold the new phone in such a way that you don't interfere with the antenna. And lastly -our problem--the os upgrade was never designed with the 3G in mind.

Apple: your design is great. Lots of interesting innovation. Just make everything work!

I am having the same issue. It takes about 7 seconds for the SMS app to load. I just did a restore this morning with now luck. I had a strange thing on the first update (first installation of iOS 4) was that it lost my voicemail password, had to rest it.

    Any fix would be helpful

    Heeelloooooo Aaaaaapple!! Is there somebody?

All iPhone 3G do not work as they did before. My iPhone 3G is also very, very, slow. 5 - 10 seconds before the slider reacts when "opening" the iPhone. Apple, please do something!

    Dear Apple,

I have been a faithful Mac user for many years. The first Mac I owned was a Macintosh SE FDHD, and I was thrilled to be able to boot it without swapping diskettes because it came with two diskette drives (I later upgraded to a 40 Mb hard drive, which is a whole 'nother story).

In short, I've stuck with you because you've almost continually made good products better, and supported so-called "legacy" products for what I consider to be a long time (I just gave up on the 7200/75 last year).

Now, I have until December before my current AppleCare warranty runs out on my iPhone 3G and after upgrading it to iOS 4, my Apple experience is suddenly sucking like the vacuum Nature abhors.

This is not how you will get me to buy a new iPhone. Nor any iPads (why should I spend a dime to buy what I know will be relegated to paperweight status by a company dopey enough to release an OS that uses all the RAM to idle?).

FIX this ASAY (As Soon As Yesterday), or I'll be telling my kids how great Apple used to be while we shop for boxes to run UNIX ports.

    iPhone 3g runn idling iOS4

This may or may not be the solution but take a look at this page from appletoolbox
    http://appletoolbox.com/2010/06/iphone-3g-slow-after-ios-4-0-update/

My personal experience was that the "hard reset" didn't work. Haven't tried the "restore" because I haven't backed up my files yet.
But after going to Safari and closing all the unused windows (had two open) along with deleting Opera. The phone appears to be more responsive.

Give it a try and let us know the feed back.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh !!!!!!! Why, oh why did I upgrade !?!?!?!?!?

I think it is completely criminal that Apple has treated such a large cohort of loyal 3G fans in such a shabby manner. Is this the thank-you we all get for buying this phone and paying for the associated apps / tunes? My 4-year old daughter was able to comment on how the slow the phone had become. It does not take a genius to see that the performance of the device has become very seriously impaired. Was the testing done by monkeys ???? Surely with all the revenue Apple are taking, they can do better than this? I think this thread should be a wake-up call to apple. SORT IT !!!

Assume that Apple doesn't follow this thread, nor any others on this web site. If you want to express your feedback to Apple, you should do so here:

    http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html

If enough 3G owners submit a formal complaint, perhaps they will notice the extent of the problem and do something about it.

Our 3g 8Gb iPhones are both suffering - besides being slow in the various ways, we're also getting occasional memory running out messages ... even though checking Settings / General / About tells us they both still have over 20% free (1.7Gb free, out of 8Gb total) ...

we're also getting occasions when it seems to freeze completely, and we find we have to go back a step & try again ...

grrh, if we'd known we were likely to be thinking of throwing them across the room, we wouldn't have updated them to iOS4 !
