Aug 19, 2010 11:51 AM in response to Christopher John Hunterby highdef, try to keep 25 percent free space when you are done, os 4.02 may run slower than a 16gb model. Remember memory is a function of performance. When fre space is limited so it the ability to access the data. -
Aug 19, 2010 11:52 AM in response to Christopher John Hunterby highdef,If you perform the backup as I have explained in itunes, you wont loose anything. -
Aug 19, 2010 11:54 AM in response to n3ntoby highdef,Hellllllloooooooo, apple does not care about your data, read their disclaimer or just go talk to a "g" person. Apple makes no promises "in writing" about your data. Consult a professional who specializes in data recoveries like myself. -
Aug 19, 2010 11:55 AM in response to enosporkby highdef, email me through this thread and I will send you instructions, no jailbreaking involved, or hacks, just itunes on a mac. -

Aug 19, 2010 12:06 PM in response to DudeAbides59by glennthayer,An update...
I made a genius bar appointment for my iPhone. They tried a few things, then they replaced my phone (even though it was out of warranty).
I now have all the functionality of my 3G with none of the hassles of the new operating system (I'm back on the OS 3.1.3). They apologized for the hassle and I'll be upgrading my phone to the iPhone 4 in the next few months.
The service and response at the store kept me as a customer. -
Aug 19, 2010 12:12 PM in response to Xplorer77by pibbc1,Apple has until my ATT contract expires to fix my iPhone 3G sluggishness. All those that are purchasing iphone4 and iPads are going to be so upset when they "upgrade" to IOS6 in less than two years and their user experience is destroyed. Apples response so far has been, "That is the way technology works" YEAH, right; I would like to Steve J use my iPhone for a day, make that an hour! Its a joke! Never before have I seen an upgrade perform a downgrade in this manner. All these complaints landing on deaf ears? I would be a fool to buy another iProduct right now. Do not be a fool! Apple is currently practicing bad business! -
Aug 19, 2010 12:17 PM in response to Christopher John Hunterby highdef,Here you go.
How to restore a 3g iphone and install os 4.02, follow closely.
step 1- do a hard reset to turn phone off, wait a minute till you do next step.
step 2- turn on your phone.
step 3- open itunes on your computer, do not plug phone in yet.
step 4- after phone is started up and itunes is started up, plug in phone.
step 5- after phone is seen by itunes, verify that you have downloaded os4.02
step 6- if you have not click check for update, download if needed.
step 7- double click the text next to the iphone icon to highlight it.
step 8- rename your iphone to say something like Drews iphone ??//??/???? date
step 9- by renaming your phone you can insure backup, sync and backup phone now
step 10- wait, be patient, dont rush, this takes a while, seems forever.
step 11- make sure your computer does not go to sleep.
step 12- after the sync and backup are complete, verify backup by holding the ctrl key down and right click on the device to pull up drop down menu.
step 13- click restore from backup to verify that your backup with new phone name is in the choices to backup from, do not perform a restore from backup right now.
step 14- now after you have verified that your backup is actually there, click restore, this will erase all data from your phone. this will take a few minutes, now would be a good time for a second cup of coffee.
step 15- after the restore is complete, you now have a iphone 3g with 0s4.02, and no other data on it. Make sure your phone remains plugged in this whole process, do not unplug phone, I cannot stress this enough, and dont rush it.
Now you can hold down the ctrl key and right click on the device in itunes and select restore from backup, select the backup with the new name and with the date you changes, this is the last backup you made, you can rename the iphne later. Let the computer do the restore from backup to lay down all of your contacts, emails, and apps. You will most likely need some usernames and passwords for wifi and such.
step 16- after the restore from backup is complete let the phone connect to the cellular network by itself, do not unplug. after the phone displays " connected to cellular network, you can quit itunes and uplug your phone.
Now your iphone 3g is loaded with a fresh copy of 0s 4.02 and all of your stuff is back the way is was with the previous os.
I did not have the same luck with an "upgrade"
The Iphone 3g must be restored as a new phone with os 4.02 and restored from a good backup to work.
Good luck.

Aug 19, 2010 12:21 PM in response to glennthayerby highdef,They are banking on customers just like you.
They know there is nothing wrong with your phone, so they replaced yours with a phone from a person who was there days before, a refirb. So now you are a happy customer with a "new " phone, and they are banking on your promise to buy an iphone 4, which you prolly will.
good for you. -
Aug 19, 2010 12:24 PM in response to pibbc1by highdef,There is nothing wrong with the phone, it is the software and how it was installed.
My iphone 3g with os 4.02 works perfectly, I can't explain it, it just works as good or better than before with os 3.0x -
Aug 19, 2010 12:55 PM in response to highdefby n3nto,Although I have done this before (cleared to factory settings) I did not restore as a new phone so Im following your exact steps. I will compare the results to the 3G that I downgraded this afternoon.
Should be done in an hour -
Aug 19, 2010 2:19 PM in response to highdefby n3nto,Sorry
THIS DID NOT MAKE my Iphone 3G work ANY FASTER.
Dont bother with this restore as a new Iphone, by all means do it but your wasting your time.
Highdef maybe you just dont remember how fast your 3G was with version 3.1. I am fortunate enough (or unfortunate!) to have them both in front of me. Il compare the results and show them tomorrow if anyone is interested. -

This is what I found too. There was one restore I did that made the phone "functional" under 4.0.2, but nothing like 3.1.3. -
Aug 19, 2010 2:31 PM in response to cliffby highdef,You obviously have enough time on your hands to waste everyone else's here.
My iphone 3g with os 4.02 works better than ever. My cellular phone calls dont drop anymore and I actually can make calls from 9500 feet above sea level.
You can drone on about how your phone does not work, but my iphone 3g with os 4.02 works perfectly after a restore. If speed is what you want out of a phone buy a computer. Remember , cell phones were designed to make "PHONE CALLS" NOT LOOK AT WEBSITES AND SHOOT HIGHDEF VIDEO. That is why Apple makes the iphone , for the convience of retrieving email, texting and making phone calls.
Sounds like you need to by a computer and stop wasting time trying to make your iphone into one.
Good Day
Andrew
