Q: Iphone 3G slow after update to IOS4

The upgrade to IOS4 took forever but eventualy was completed succesfully.
But the iphone is very slow with IOS4. It doesn't work as smooth as it used to be. Also new applications such as the iBook application are very slow, doesn't respond smooth on screentaps etc. Who has the same experience?
I'm thinking about going back to version 3.1.3 because IOS4 doesn't add anything to improve the user experience on the iPhone 3G.

I hope Apple will listen to their iphone users and will release an update soon for iOS4 which improves the performance on older iPhones.

does not get reception like it did. It will now drop out altogether and is unusable in areas where I could receive a signal before ...

if that's true, sounds like some pretty dumb programming by Apple - ie: it wasn't just a matter of what it displayed, but it also acts on what it displays so, by so-called correcting the display, they've also hobbled the 'phone ... doh, grrrrh, scream !

I managed to get mine back to reasonable speed by restoring to "new"
I then sync'd it to my iTunes, but I did not add any music or Videos and only a minimum of apps (those I use most)
I have an iPod and an iPad, so many of the apps I moved to the iPad.
It seems to be back to a reasonably quick speed (at least much better than after the update) so i can use the phone... as a phone...
But it's no longer the iPhone I had before as I had to sacrifice so much.

I repeat it again... Apple, you screwed up here and in the meantime the Android phones are catching on!

Wake up, Mr Jobs and do something about the iPhone mess, you're sure to lose market share doing business this way

I finally had enough this week and took the plunge to revert back to 3.1.3. I now have my iPhone back! I do miss the folders, but it's a small sacrifice so that I can have a phone that doesn't take 10 secs to create an SMS.

I've no update on the 3G iOS4 issue, other than to say ...
Unfortunately, I didn't hear anything about the issues until after I upgraded. Here's what happened ...
    1) Upgraded to 4.0.1
    2) 3-4 days after the upgrade, iPhone just started to hang - went dog slow!
    3) Tried to reboot, but couldn't, as it was just hanging.
    4) Eventually got it to reboot, and all was fine...
    5) For another 3-4 days, when it started hanging again. So, I did another reboot.
    6) All fine again, for another couple of days, starting hanging again...and so on.
    7) Also noticed the battery fading really quickly - even when not using WiFi or any apps (including the iPod)!?! The iPhone is not over heating though, i.e., it is not getting hot (it's normal).

Did a Google search to see if anyone was having issues ... lo and behold, loads of Apple customers are!!! Pity I didn't Google the impact of the upgrade before doing it. Apple's software is always fantastic - if I'd being upgrading Microsoft software, I definitely have checked things out first. **** it!!!

Is there any news on Apple having a solution to this any time soon? If not I think I'll downgrade to iOS3 (it always worked brilliantly).

this thread just surpassed a quarter of a million views ...

only half as many as the WiFi one, though, where some of them seem to be cooking their iPhones in ovens & perhaps even freezing them (didn't pay too much attention, being a touch squeemish about electronics & heat, 'though we did freeze our EyeTV Diversity stick, for an hour or so, to fix some reception problems) ...

we know they've been collecting data & working on a fix, & there's hope of an update sooner rather than later ...

they have had their moments, in the past, of course, but things going awry are pretty rare - this one probably takes the whole tin of biscuits !

My phone actually freezes at time when I get a call. It drops call all the time. I loved the phone until I upgraded to IOS4. Not it's horrible. Absolutely horrible.

If it's OK with highdef I would like to add my twopenneth to your very useful posting.

In my opinion I would insert the following items prior to the process.

    a) Delete any Apps you just don't need or use (you know there are plenty !!).

    b) Check iTunes THOROUGHLY for ANY duplicate media ESPECIALLY voice memos - if you find any deal with them BEFORE you do anything else.

    c) Locate 'Backup' folder in Library/Application Support/MobileSync and COPY it to your desktop. If you have not attempted to upgrade previously your 3.1.3 backup will be here in case things go wrong and you need to downgrade again. If you have tried to upgrade previously then it may or may not be here.

NB. I also found some significant duplication and corruption with media files in Bento. I have no idea if this is relevant to the upgrade problems but if you have Bento installed it might be worth backing it up to Bento on your computer, uninstalling it from your iPhone, and re-installing/syncing after everything else is done just to play it safe.

Then follow highdef's very well-detailed process to the letter.

I totally agree - the iPhone 3G is DEFINITELY capable of running OS4 - I know this because I had all the major lagging problems and ended up doing much of what highdef has described by luck more than judgement a few weeks back (I documented some ramblings here: http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=12078619#12078619).

The only minor lags I get now were showing with 3.1.3 anyway and I only have 1GB of 16GB free.

I'm as certain as can be that the problem is either with the upgrade process itself or with a data corruption issue that upsets the upgrade process.

Whatever the problem actually is should have been addressed by Apple. The upgrade should have been the same as any other. To have to tinker about with renaming your iPhone and restoring backups etc after your iPhone has been rendered useless by an authorised upgrade is not what we have come to expect from Apple and is alien to what they always seemed to stand for.

Apple's silence on such a serious issue that has affected so many customers is totally unacceptable.

Apple - shame on you… your long, long continued silence is deafening…

...but, our conversations on this board are between each other so our comments are not 'sent' to Apple.

If you want to be heard you must tell Apple what you think here: http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html - don't just assume that other people will do it - you need to do it too.

Message was not to long. It would be nice if he told us when the new software update is coming. Meanwhile we have to suffer with an IBRICK cell phone.

' "Jobs' response was unsurprisingly terse:
    Software update coming soon." '

    My experience quickly,

Had my iphone 3g loved it. (set up a shrine for my preacious)
Upgraded from 3.1.2 to OS 4.0.1

    Iphone=Brick now
Lags horribly, HORRIBLY, drops calls constantly.

    Restored phone, still lagging/dropping

Restored phone to factory and did NOT back up, this actually fixed the lagging issue considerably however i still get dropped calls (every single call multiple times).

BUT i write this because its ridiculous. i shouldnt have to delete all my voicemails, music, videos, apps, contacts, backgrounds.
Whats the F&#$ing point of an iphone if i cant have anything on it in order to "run" the OS4? Even then it still drops calls so as far as im concerned now i have a fast brick.

I actually wanted an iphone 4g (going to get a case so antenna isnt issue) however apple ****** me off that they released an OS this horrible without testing it.

If there is a comparable phone when my upgrade comes up i will probably go with that instead im tired of having an iphone that doesnt do apps doesnt work right and cant even function as a phone.

Thanks for the link, Mb702LL. That's encouraging news that Steve Jobs actually admits that there is a problem and that they're working on a solution! Here is the text of the article:

"A new email from Apple CEO Steve Jobs appears to confirm that the company will soon be issuing a software update to address issues with the iPhone 3G's performance under iOS 4. Late last month, the company acknowledged that it was "looking into" user reports of the issues.

The new email came in response to feedback sent by a customer who expressed frustration over the performance of his iPhone 3G, calling it "dog slow" and pointing to problems with system responsiveness when scrolling, zooming, and typing.

I've waited patiently through 4.0.1 and 4.0.2, looking for a fix that will make my phone work again. I've read the forums that advise me to jailbreak my phone or use some other method so I can downgrade back to a version of iPhone 3, however I'm not prepared to use a method that is not supported by Apple.
    Jobs' response was unsurprisingly terse:

    Software update coming soon.

    Sent from my iPhone

While Jobs did not offer details on the planned software update, he was most likely referring to iOS 4.1, which has been in testing with developers. Anecdotal reports have indicated that the iOS 4.1 betas do seem to be improving performance on the iPhone 3G, but confirmation that the company is addressing the issues will be welcome news to users who have been frustrated by iOS 4 performance on their devices."

In the meantime, restoring my 3G as a NEW PHONE is still working great with iOS 4.0.2

I would still like to know how to extract the 4.0.1 Backup out of the 4.0.1 ipsw file after the "restore back to new". The 4.0.2 upgrade removed all previous Backups but def fixed the lagging issues I've been having.
