Q: Iphone 3G slow after update to IOS4

The upgrade to IOS4 took forever but eventualy was completed succesfully.
But the iphone is very slow with IOS4. It doesn't work as smooth as it used to be. Also new applications such as the iBook application are very slow, doesn't respond smooth on screentaps etc. Who has the same experience?
I'm thinking about going back to version 3.1.3 because IOS4 doesn't add anything to improve the user experience on the iPhone 3G.

I hope Apple will listen to their iphone users and will release an update soon for iOS4 which improves the performance on older iPhones.

No it is not working great.
Your so called fix <<something many of us had done a long time ago>> attenuates the IOS4 problems it does by no means resolve them.

IOS4 is very laggy on any 3G phone even with nearly everything turned off and with a near blank phone, its just too heavy. At present I have a 3G with ios4 and a 3G with 3.1. the differences in speed are enormous, stop saying that "restoring as new" resolves the problem.

Carol you want to sell me your phone? I would love to confirm what your saying.

having upgraded my 3G to iOS4, my wife was slow in giving me her's to do as well ... meaning I happened to have tried mine before she gave me her's, and I'd Googled & found this thread just in-time ...

I don't often get to get even near her 'phone, since she has it with her just about all the time, but we swapped yesterday because she had to go out & her's had a flat battery ...

so, for short while, I got to use 3.1.3 again - and, must say, it wasn't quite as fast & slick as I remember !

    Hello,
My phone is a 16gb iPhone.
I stripped all my media, email and all content before performing
My restore. The problem people are having is they
    Are updating and not restoring.
In order for os4.02 to work on an iPhone 3 g you must restore as a new phone.
I am using my iPhone 3G right now to make this post over my wifi connection, and have made all of my posts from my iPhone. If my iPhone could not handle this task don't you think I would be using my intel 2.33 MacBook pro 17 inch instead?????

Do you have a link to the Apple Support Document that describes this fix?

Apple don't have a fix yet - that is totally unacceptable.

In the meantime our iPhones are DEFINITELY FIXABLE without 3rd party software and without jail-breaking.

I promise you I am no ultra-techy nerd but I fixed my iPhone a few days after OS4 completely ruined it. At the time it was certainly more luck than judgement but I managed to get my 3G working just fine with 4.0.0 and have since upgraded to 4.0.1 and then 4.0.2 with no problem... and with no jail-breaking. I did use RecBoot at the time but I now understand that I didn't need to go back to 3.1.3 in order to re-upgrade to a working 4.0.0 - it was an unnecessary step.

We shouldn't have to be doing this - Apple should be doing it for us - but there's no point in cutting our own noses off if there's something that might work right now.

Don't forget to complain in the right place: http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html.

Adding my voice the legions of ****** off 3G owners who have had their smartphones turned into slowphones by iOS4. I used to check maps on route, now I have to remember to check a good 5 minutes before I really need it. Apps are crashing daily. Anything that requires typing requires waiting a few minutes before the keyboard appears. It's pathetic.

I'm having the same problems with my iPhone 3G and it's driving me nuts (the cynical part of me wonders if this is a tactic to get people to upgrade to the 4G).
Can someone please tell me how to go back to 3.1.3? I was happy with my iPhone the way it was!!

WE SHOULD NOT HAVE TO DOWNGRADE. THIS IS RIDICULOUS. IF THEY WANT TO RUIN MY PHONE WITH THEIR NEW SOFTWARE THEN I WANT A NEW PHONE. A 3GS OR 4G I DONT CARE AT THIS POINT. APPLE HAS ROYALLY SCREWED THE THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE WITH 3G'S. WE WANT ANSWERS.

I read yesterday on Mac Daily News that Steve Jobs says there is a software update coming to fix our 3G slowness issue.

Another brilliant plan to get attention in the media.
The more we care, the more they sell, it always happens.
Just take a close look at "Apple Computer " history.
We buy, then we pay for it "later", with product and software beta testing.
The Apple customer is the test lab, and we willingly participate... cautiously.

Did Apple write the new code to work with the new Iphone 4? They also needed to get the new iphone Manufactured to mirror the ipad, so is anyone really surprised the old iphone 3g could not run the new code, "efficiently"? It is kinda like running leopard on a g3 laptop, prolly not gonna happen. So now Apple has to write new code for both phones. I am sure it is possible, but does not sound very easy to do.

I entered an Apple store in Colorado today and the employee there had no clue about what I was talking about, (3g iphone) problems, and also had no idea there was an issue with the software.

That pretty much raps it up for my confidence in Apples customer service skills. It reminds me, of the concept, of an un-nova. it slowly consumes itself until it disappears.

I've also had nothing but problems since the forced iphone upgrade.... my phone has over half of the memory free, but the "Genius" at the Applestore said my phone showed all the app's were crashing...

I spent 6 hours driving between AT&T and Apple store, trying to get satisfaction.... I've a contract for service til next fall, AT&T is going to let me out because the 3G probably won't be working...

The next generation of OS for the phones will limit the uses of the 3GS, and the 3G will be a paperweight....

I've bought my last Apple product
