Q: Iphone 3G slow after update to IOS4

The upgrade to IOS4 took forever but eventualy was completed succesfully.
But the iphone is very slow with IOS4. It doesn't work as smooth as it used to be. Also new applications such as the iBook application are very slow, doesn't respond smooth on screentaps etc. Who has the same experience?
I'm thinking about going back to version 3.1.3 because IOS4 doesn't add anything to improve the user experience on the iPhone 3G.

I hope Apple will listen to their iphone users and will release an update soon for iOS4 which improves the performance on older iPhones.

other sources mention iOS4.1 is in Beta 3 & there are still significant memory leak issues to be solved ... sounds relevant to 3G, but who knows ... (?)

I was planning to purchase an Iphone 4 and an Ipad as a gift but I will put those purchases well and truley on hold until Apple addresses this issue with the 3G. Even then my trust of the Apple brand has taken a severe beating given there lack of reponse and acknowledgement of this problem.

Apple is doeing this to give a push for sale of Iphone 4.

Well I'm done with Iphone. My next two phones would be HTC- Android.

It's so helpful that the most relevant bit of information after all this time is a cryptic one line from an email that may or may not even be legitimate! Great PR.

I am sure someone at Apple can read.
How cool would it be to actually
make our complaints in "audio email" format?
I am sure the someone would hear something.
Honestly, it feels like they don't care about sat all.
It's has become more about the product and not the customers
Positive experience. Apple has the opportunity to
to change, but just like my momma told me,..." people/ companies don't change, they just become more so.

    I own an iPhone 3G
I admit that is a piece of hardware 2-years old
I admit that iOS4 is a new software full of nice features
I admit that I like all this features
but I can't admit that all this new features must work really fine in a hardware so old...

When iOS4 came out I upgrade and iPhone go slow... and this is totally normal... how can I expect that will work so fine than in the new iPhone 4?... this is impossible... iPhone 3G isn't iPhone 4...

I start to quit features and things start to came back to work fine...

    turn off spotlight
    turn off MMS
turn off locations (only works in maps...)
    turn off push email
    turn off autobrightness
    turn off notifications
    turn off genius in appstore
    don't use folders

ok... all of you can say that without this I don't have an iPhone with iOS4... but I disagree

I have new email inbox unified.. nice feature
I have calendar and contacts sync with google account... nice feature

I have my iPhone 3G working fast like first day
I can use a lot of apps
and the most important... I have the latest upgrade in terms of security bugs solved

I think that the problem is that we want to use all features that we can... but we must use the features that we need... and forget features that really we don't need

I really want to have a phone that makes a lot of things... but I can't expect that the phone makes more that it can be done... and more than really I need

the best feature is the lack of features

I totally disagree with you. The upgrade proposed by Apple should at least give the same possibilities, the same working frame as the previous system. If not so, Apple should have warned users of iPhone 3G and not encouraged them to upgrade (nearly forced automatically !).
And they should give us a way to go back to the previous system.
Although I consider Apple failed considerably on this matter, I still hope, they will put everything right in a next upgrade.
With many normal functionality turned off, my iPhone 3G works although sometimes very slowly and with unacceptable stalling from time to time, even on the Home button or on Settings.

I updated my phone just a few weeks ago and immediately saw problems with function. It has worsened every day. I had had enough when I tried to answer my phone on Friday and it crashed. I went to the Apple Store hoping they would resolve the issue by giving me a new phone but I was told to wait for an update, even after telling the kid there that my phone was completely unreliable. I wasn't surprised.

This morning I decided to follow the post in lifehacker and downgrade my phone back to 3.1.3. The process was easy and worked like a charm. A few things though. I did loose several contacts and all my pictures because my last saved updated that wasn't a 4.0.1 was from June of 2009.

I'm just glad to have my phone back and in working order and I'm ready to pass it on to my husband. He can sit around and wait for the next update!

    Hey Folks,

My I phone 3G was terribly slow with OS4. I tried everything mentioned in these forums. Some things fixed it for a little while but it eventually returned to its sluggish ways.

A few days ago I rolled back to 3.1.3. I'm happy again. I do not recommend upgrading to 4 until apple specifically addresses the issues with the 3G phone. In the mean time, I recommend rolling back to 3.1.3.

I've had it with my iPhone 3G. Like most of the other users here, my phone is basically a brick. It takes seconds to execute any command - open the calendar or email. Most applications fail the first or second time I try to open them. It's just not the performance I expected when I bought the phone 21 months ago.

When will the rumored iOS4.1 update - the one that supposedly addresses the iPhone 3GS problems - be available??

I feel it is a reasonable expectation that a will work for the two years of my cell phone contract. Current performance of my phone is totally unacceptable, as is Apple's complete lack of an adequate response to the issue. Get on it! If my phone isn't working to my expectations when my contract runs out, I will not be purchasing an iPhone 4. Until then, I'm going to have to live with this agony, or shell out some major bucks to get out of it.

And let's not get started on the issues with AT&T.
