Q: Iphone 3G slow after update to IOS4

The upgrade to IOS4 took forever but eventualy was completed succesfully.
But the iphone is very slow with IOS4. It doesn't work as smooth as it used to be. Also new applications such as the iBook application are very slow, doesn't respond smooth on screentaps etc. Who has the same experience?
I'm thinking about going back to version 3.1.3 because IOS4 doesn't add anything to improve the user experience on the iPhone 3G.

I hope Apple will listen to their iphone users and will release an update soon for iOS4 which improves the performance on older iPhones.

I'm on day 4 after using the fix described by "highdef" in this thread. I've experienced no slow down over time as feared by some. Phone is just a fast as out of the box and all apps respond as designed (with the exception of Slacker Radio. That app really took a dive.)

I think Apple should have had itunes wipe the device initially. This would have saved a lot of headache.

My 3G is basically been rendered useless. I have restored twice. I have reset twice. And nothing. the email is painfully slow, the phone freezes about 20 times a day, the calls drop all the time. It is the worst phone I have ever had. And was the BEST. I am an Apple lover but about to take my ipad, my two imacs, my macbook and trade it all for PC. I have never been this upset and can't believe how long it is taking apple to fix this problem. I will not go get the new one because I feel betrayed by them. They need to make this right. NOW

Did you restore as new? Highdef's instructions are flawless if followed by the book. I do have one additional suggestion if you have Windows7. Take the first backup described and copy it to another location before doing anything else. Then continue with his process.

Install as new phone does not make it faster.

If you updated from 4.0.0 to 4.0.1 its as fast as it ever is going to be under IOS4.

Maybe you think its as fast because you dont remember what it was like when it was NEW, I can and it is no way as fast.

IOS4.0 was the worst of all with constant crashes, IOS4.0.1 made it slightly better, less crashes freezing but it is still laggy and is frequently overwhelmed when texting, phoning or using calendar. A clean installation with hardly anything working (spotlight, location services etc etc etc all turned off), hardly any apps and with plenty of space works frustratingly slowly. I wont even go into the heating or battery issues.

IOS4.0.2 is only about the PDF exploit so I dont know how it can be better than IOS4.0.1.

I'm not saying my iPhone is running faster because of 4.0.2. In fact I never had 4.0.1. Because I installed as a new is what's making it much faster. It wouldnt matter anyway since the OS was wiped out upon taking it back to "newness".

I measure the speed by how long it takes the keyboard to respond to my typing. The response is instantanious. There are no pauses between letters or pauses navigating between emails as before. How many times do you have to press one of the "back" buttons before the device actually acknowledges your request? (i.e Inbox, Messages, Edit, etc.) I press once and instantly the button darkens for not even a half second then executes.

BTW - I still have all of my apps.

Apple, Please respond to this ongoing issue. You are alienating your current/future customer base. I have 2 Iphone 3g;s that are virtually worthless after updating to iOS4. For almost 2 years I said how I couldn't live without my iphone. Not only a good product but a stong word of mouth campaign helped grow the iphone hype. Now I am to the point I cant live with it. Is there a response to when and if this will be fixed?

not to stoke this fire further but...I need to complain to somebody

My iPhone is PAINFULLY slow after this iOS 4 update.
I wish I had not updated. It severely hampered my phone's performance.
If the performance was not acceptable then why did Apple say it was compatible? We would have been better off being "no longer supported" than the current poor state.

...at least provide an Apple approved method to go back to version 3?

    Have a nice day.

very nearly threw mine (3G iOS4.0.2) out the window yesterday - had to borrow wife's (3g OS3.3.1) not only to use 'Maps, but just to be able to the simple thing of answer a 'call - mine would tell me someone was 'calling, but would never let me answer it .... grrrh, bad day, and got really really really annoyed with how Apple have & are handling this simple but terrible hiccup in their usual smooth & tight user-centric operation ...

The problem here is two fold with Hidef's fix. One, you have to carve out a ton of time to do this, secondly, one must be somewhat technically savvy. Luckily I'm the latter, however, time is something I just don't have.

Second problem is a wipe and reload may work for some. The Apple Store Genius told me that this upgrade has affected 3 out of 4 iPhone 3G's. As I understand the problem to be that iOS4 requires more memory allocated than what iPhone 3g physically has, which is the main cause of the crashes. Obviously this isn't a problem on iPhone 4's.

So, goes back to to this. What may work for you isn't going to work for the masses. If you have the time, skill and the 1 out of 4 iPhones that don't have the issues - Go for it! If not, most will have to wait for the fix from Apple (if). For me, I downgraded back to 3.1.3 and applied the theory, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". The phone is night and day between os4 and os3.

I just wanted to add my voice to the list of unhappy 3G owners who upgraded to iOS4 and found significant performance problems. All the issues described above are manifest in my phone to the point it is almost unusable. The worst issue is the response time to access applications and enter in data. The synch between touch input and phone response is unacceptable (i.e., the phone takes seconds to recognize touch input).

I trust Apple will release a fix soon. A once well integrated product that was a joy to use has become a brick.

It's been two months since the first complaint on this thread, and Apple has not even bothered to advise 3G Users who are still on 3.1.3 that they might not want to take the upgrade to 4.x just yet.

No, my friend ... I'm afraid they just don't care. I trust they are willing to abandon 3G users for their own reasons.

It's a pity, but I'll live without Steve Jobs for my phone needs in the future.

My iPhone 3g is so slow its basically unusable at this point. And that combined with AT&T’s pathetic coverage, I have no choice but go back to Verizon and maybe get a Droid or something. I need a reliable phone first and the iPhone/AT&T are not that.

When I read about the iPhone 4 being released in South Korea and China I think with the size of those markets the 3G problem probably seems pretty insignificant. Seems like a few million reasons.
