Q: Iphone 3G slow after update to IOS4

The upgrade to IOS4 took forever but eventualy was completed succesfully.
But the iphone is very slow with IOS4. It doesn't work as smooth as it used to be. Also new applications such as the iBook application are very slow, doesn't respond smooth on screentaps etc. Who has the same experience?
I'm thinking about going back to version 3.1.3 because IOS4 doesn't add anything to improve the user experience on the iPhone 3G.

I hope Apple will listen to their iphone users and will release an update soon for iOS4 which improves the performance on older iPhones.

I will add my comments on this issue.

I have been happy over the past two years UNTIL the iOS4 update. Between the changes within Apple and issues with AT&T and now this disaster called iOS4 on iPhone 3g plus the lack of response from Apple on this. When my phone won't allow me to answer calls from my daughter as the touch screen becomes unresponsive, the device is useless to me.

    I have determined my solution.

I will be leaving both Apple and AT&T in hopes of a stable/functional device and a more cost efficient provider.

My iPhone will become my boating iPod and home Pandora streaming device via Wifi but I may have to downgrade to 3.1.3 so Pandora doesn't crash as it does with 4.0.x

Hopefully Apple will step up and do the right thing for it's customers but my patience has reached it's limits at this point.

    Good luck all.

Let's face it. When the iPhone 3G was first released, it was a revolutionary "game changer". That was then. Today we are blessed with competing smartphones (on less congested networks) that give the iPhones a run for their money.

Ooh, and "Can you hear me now?" :-D

DAY 5 after what is now being refered to as "The Highdef Fix". (pg 81 of thread) Phone is still running at iOS3 speed. Keyboard and typing are still responding instantaneously as day 1.

    HOW LONG DID IT TAKE:
Here's what I remember as far as how much time it took to perform highdef's 3G iOS4 fix. (I rounded up when in doubt.) It took about an hour, give or take 5-10 min. Your time may differ. At the beginning I was willing to take all day if needed and felt that I had nothing to lose since my phone was so slow as it was.

    step 3- (0 min)Already open.

Sorry to doubt your word but you must be a minority.

I have two Iphones 3D did that to both and not much good came of it. I have also been in contact with a friend who also has a 3G and he did the same thing and did not notice any diference.

You must be very lucky (I hope so) or your a troller (more probable)

I'm having the same problem. I have called the apple customer service and they adviced me to reinstall the software, but this hasn't solved anything at all.
I'm really annoyed that I cant easily just go back to OS3.1.3 and just have a working phone.
    Thats all i want now.
    Can anyone help.

3-4 days after the 4.X upgrade my 3G became erratic.. Searched the forums for a quick fix and decided the fix with the least amount of brain damage would be to return the phone to an Apple store for a replacement..

Within minutes of discussing the issues with a genius I had a new 3G with 3.X and I was good to go..

Plugged into itunes, declined the upgrade, reloaded all my data and problem solved..

It is perfectly clear to me that Apple does not care about us as customers after the fact. They read this forum and understand our problem. They have not offered anything, whether you call them, email them, or visit them in person. Now on the other hand they will gladly sell you a brand new iPhone 4 where this IOS4 operating system works just fine. Sometimes you have to wonder if Apple just gets a little cocky sometimes, just like they did when they refused to fix the antenna issues on the iPhone 4. Then they told us we were holding the phone the wrong way. Buy a case that will fix the problem. Never even offered to admit it was their problem and they should fix it. Yes we all love our iPhones and are proud of being an IPhone owner and user, but they should never take us for granted! Ask yourself who's the BOSS! Its all up to you!

    Same issue.
I cannot deal with the slowness and hanging anymore.
Doesn't Apple test releases anymore? Why improve and make things worse?

I am hoping Apple comes up with a fix soon....

    memory ...

hmm, not sure it can be as simple as that ...

eg:quote from the Apple (UK) website, just a few minutes ago :

The iOS 4.0.2 Software Update includes a new security update and the iOS 4.0.2 improvement to the signal strength formula for iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, and iPhone 3G. The real signal strength remains the same, but the bars on iPhone will indicate it more precisely. Updating is easy.

iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS owners. Haven't upgraded to iOS 4 yet ? The free iOS 4.0.2 Software Update brings over 100 new features to your iPhone. Here are a few ... ... ...

Compatibility ... iOS 4 works with iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G. Not all features are compatible with all devices. For example, multitasking is available only with iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS.

FYI from John Gruber's Daring Fireball website about next week's Apple event. His predictions in the past have been pretty good:

Update: Readers are asking about iOS 4.1. I expect that, too.......

So maybe we have an answer next week?

I did the 4.02 update last week and it was a bit better but now it is back to slowness and all the other problems.

I am so sick of taking so much and dealing with this problem.
I just finished my 2 year contract in July and I was hoping to have a nice cell phone for another year because my husband has 1 more year with AT&T contract.
Now I have to wait 1 year before we change to AT&T. I do not have money to go buy a new phone or change phone carriers. So I am stuck with this brick.

I guess Mr. Jobs does not care about his customers. I was happy with this cell phone till he decided to break it. I will never buy another Apple product because when he feels like it, he will break it again.

Apple please remove the thumb from you know where and fix this.

Countless hours of my time completely wasted trying all of the recommended fixes. I am so frustrated with the pathetic performance of this phone it is very tempting to throw it in the trash and dig out my old Motorola RAZR. What is the point of having all the extra features and apps on a phone if you cannot use them?
