Q: Iphone 3G slow after update to IOS4

The upgrade to IOS4 took forever but eventualy was completed succesfully.
But the iphone is very slow with IOS4. It doesn't work as smooth as it used to be. Also new applications such as the iBook application are very slow, doesn't respond smooth on screentaps etc. Who has the same experience?
I'm thinking about going back to version 3.1.3 because IOS4 doesn't add anything to improve the user experience on the iPhone 3G.

I hope Apple will listen to their iphone users and will release an update soon for iOS4 which improves the performance on older iPhones.

NIGHTMARE. This is obviously me just venting. I was happy as could be with my 3G and then Apple decides to absolutely screw things up by having me upgrade (there's a laugh) to 4.0. Nothing works right. The phone rings and I cannot get the slide to unlock. I am ready to throw this thing against the wall. I have called support a few times. I've done all the fixes and the reduction of apps etc. My phone has become a piece of ####. If a fix doesn't come out soon, Android here I come.
What the #### were you guys thinking? Did anybody check this out before it was issued? NIGHTMARE.

Ive had the 3g since last May. After the ios4 update the phone started acting up. Mainly the texting was horrible and there was a slight pause in anything i opened. Sometimes in safari it would freeze for more than 10sec but it works. I had over 400 pics on my phone so i burned most of them and got rid of them on my phone then i unchecked everything in spotlight search and did 2 hardboots. Long behold my 3g is running great finally not pausing while texting and safari runs alot smoother. This will have to do until the 4.1update hopefully apple can fix it permanently.

    nightmare ...

and yet, despite everything, the strange thing is, they are still, today, encouraging people to update :

"iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS owners. Haven't upgraded to iOS 4 yet ? The free iOS 4.0.2 Software Update brings over 100 new features to your iPhone ... "

    bizarre, totally bizarre ...

I've got an iphone 3g and am still on the 3.1.3 software version. I've heard such bad things about the upgrade and 4.0.2 still seems to be bad. What's the latest on this? Apple seem to be trying to get 3G owners to upgrade even though there are all these issues. What will they do if I upgrade and my phone is a mess afterwards? I'm still in the one years warranty, will they fix it at the Apple store?

For now, I'm avoiding the upgrade until I know for sure.

    Thanks all.

I'm another one with the same problems. The texting is REALLY sluggish and so is unlocking/locking the phone.
I have the most recent update as I thought it would solve all the problems...but now I am left with a new problem...
I can connect to my home wifi, along with my notebook, computer, other iPhone and several other computers. However, it doesn't use it to go on safari or anything. So, it knows the network is there and shows that it's "connected" in the settings but when it comes to actually doing something, like downloading a big app or something, it doesn't use the wifi and just acts like it's not there. Has anyone else had this problem or know how to fix it? I have reset the network settings but am reluctant to restore the phone as it takes forever and I am on the go all the time so need it. If this is the only way of fixing I may have to do it.

This is my thrid iphone and I thought it was going to be okay, but it looks like it's just going to keep on messing about. I thought about buying an iPhone 4 but I think that's what Apple want you to do, and a lot of people aren't even happy with those so now I'm thinking about changing to a totally new manufacturer especially as I am going travelling and will need a working phone!!

Just an FYI for people "stuck" on IOS4:

If you download an old ipsw file (thats the firmware for your phone, you can get it from: http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=750 its also on Apple's website somewhere) you can restore it to the old firmware by holding alt (on a mac, maybe ctrl in windows) and clicking on the "Restore" button on the iphone page in iTunes, then browse to the firmware you want to use (i.e iPhone1,23.1.3_7E18Restore.ipsw) and follow the prompts, admittedly you will likely lose all your data but its a small price to pay to get a phone which actually works

would we lose data, anyone know for sure ?

also, since one of our 3G 'phones is still on 3.1.3 & has nearly the same (*) data as the other on 4.0.2, wonder if there's a simple one-click way of making one a clone of the other ?

(*) calendars, contacts, notes, photo's, music & videos, but not messages

I went back to 3.1.3 and my phone and I are happily married again. No freezing and slow performance issues anymore.
sure I lost some of the fancy new features and newer app functionality, but oh well...the phone flipping works.

By the way, to set the record straight: one does NOT have to "JB" to downgrade.

    Thank you.

Every time I try to use my bogged down Iphone 3G my loyalty to the Aplle brand just slips and slips and slips.

What really stuns me, is why Apple released ios4 to 3g owners at all. What utter contempt Apple has for it's loyal customers!

*** Apple! You destroyed my phone. The phone is sooo sloooow, buggyyyy and
hangs/restarts all the time. And the worst part is that safari crashes and I can´t even play games becuse of the lagg.

It´s like you are forcing us to buy a new phone.

Give me my money back or fix the OS!!!
