Q: Iphone 3G slow after update to IOS4

The upgrade to IOS4 took forever but eventualy was completed succesfully.
But the iphone is very slow with IOS4. It doesn't work as smooth as it used to be. Also new applications such as the iBook application are very slow, doesn't respond smooth on screentaps etc. Who has the same experience?
I'm thinking about going back to version 3.1.3 because IOS4 doesn't add anything to improve the user experience on the iPhone 3G.

I hope Apple will listen to their iphone users and will release an update soon for iOS4 which improves the performance on older iPhones.

presumably upgrading must include a re-boot, so wonder if powering down & up every day would help ... we keep ours on 24/7, week in, week out, which ought not to matter (it's 'phone, afterall), but wonder if it does ??

'spoke with someone within Apple central, a week or two back, and got the impression they hadn't yet bottomed the problem - it's cause, its occurrence, who it affected, and when ... then, anyway ...

such things do happen, sometimes ... eg: SWMBO's (*) always expecting answers from me, and I don't always have them - now & again - pretty rare, of course !

IS ANYONE listening to us?!!! I am just sooooooo angry! I LOVED my i-phone 3G. Didn't even feel the need to get a new phone. Now, looks like I'm forced to. Hmmmmmmm..... conspiracy?

This is not fair. APPLE, you owe us a working 3G!! I'm not asking for more than I had before, just a 3G that works nicely like it did before the "upgrade." For 3G users it was i-phone suicide.

HELLO, APPLE??? ANSWERS??? Do you CARE, or just want us all to buy a new phone?

(Oh... yeah, I waited an hour at the Apple store to have the guy tell me.. oh, yeah, sorry... they are trying to fix that problem. Then, he gave me the customer service number. She said we could try to restore the phone to original settings, but since the softwear had been updated... it probably wouldn't help.)

    Nice.

    Angry, Sad, Basically i-phoneless,

I've been following this thread and have tried all the suggestions listed here to try and relieve my frustrations with my slow 3G after the update, but all I can say is that nothing works. I haven't tried restoring it to an earlier firmware as some of my paid apps won't work and its also not a method released by apple. I was very happy with my 3G before I updated and feel as if I got scammed after the update! I've been waiting patiently for an official fix but it's been more than a month since this thread was started with no hope insight.

On most days, I would say that although its slow and basically useless for surfing, text messages, and gaming (if it doesn't crash), it's not hurting anyone right? Well, the other day I was sluggishly surfing and suddenly I needed to call 911 for a medical emergency. Guess what, it froze in safari. Repeated home button presses were completely irresponsive and that's not a good thing when you're panicking. I calmed down and performed a hard reset. Rebooting process felt like an eternity and when it started up, I was finally able to call for help after what was probably 3-5 minutes of delay. Thank god it was just a minor fracture. Had it been anything worse like a heart attack, this phone currently is not only unreliable, it's dangerous.

I felt that I should post my story just as a warning to everyone who's suffering from this slowness to not rely on it until a fix is out. I'm actually suprised that there hasn't been more serious cases yet. If I end up getting the new iphone 4, I personally wouldn't give this phone to a child who might end up needing to call for help if he/she were being chased by kidnappers only to have it freeze!

I hope apple releases that fix sooner than later. Even I as patient as I've been has had enough.

IOS4 is an absolute mistake for 3G users.
In my case, it takes more than double the time to perform any single task.
Additionally, applications have started to crash, which never happened before.
    I am downgrading straightaway.
    Good luck everyone

Same here. Went to my provider and they told me to post my issues here, so Apple starts to react, but don't think they really care.
iOS4 destroyed the whole iPhone experience. The main issues I have are:
    - iPod app crashes always when starting 1st time. Second time it takes between 25-35sec to start the app
    - Safari takes always a break of 20sec when loading a page
    - iPhone is unresponsive for over a minute (2-3 times a day)
    - 35sec before I can type a message
    - all apps crash the first time I try to open them
    - music stutters when playing in the background

If the hardware cannot handle the update, put the model on the not supported list (like classic iPhone). But probably it looks really bad if you cannot update your iPhone 3G after 2 years... Probably it's a bug to force the users to buy a iPhone 4.

I upgraded and my phone and it vibrates from time to time afterward for no reason. Then I upgraded it again to 4.0.2 and crasded during the upgrade. I lost everything including my phonebook and SMS messages. iPhon does not have any backup copies in my computer. Think twice before upgrade to 4.xx. It's a nightmare.

I also have been dealing with the horrible performance and crashing after the iTunes prompted me to upgrade to the new OS4. I have tried all of the work arounds posted here short of downgrading to 3.13; some of which provided short term minor improvements. Alas, here I am over 2 months later, still no formal acknowledgement or fix from Apple, and a sluggish, bug ridden device. I have contacted both Apple and AT&T and was basically told to go pound sand. This is my first and last experience with either of these companies and I have a feeling I am not alone. I do not hesitate to relate this terrible experience to everyone I know and am strongly warning against this company given the way they have treated millions of customers.

It has probably been mentioned before in this overwhelmingly long thread, but here it goes:

For those of you not too bothered about the spotlight feature, switching off all its features on the Settings>General>Spotlight Search menu will improve the performance considerably.

Then again, you lose the spotlight search.

    Good luck.

Thought I would just add another "ditto" to increase the length of this thread. Maybe it will help Apple wake up.

The "upgrade" has essentially destroyed the usefulness of both my wifes and my iPhones. Before the "upgrade" the telephone part of the iPhone was highly unreliable as AT&T's "3G" service is pretty much unavailable where I live--1/2 mile from a giant billboard explaining how AT&T's 3G is the best! Now, my iPhone hardly works on my wifi and when I'm travelling elsewhere in the city the functionality has been destroyed by slowness, unable to get a response from the touch, etc. All the things everyone here is complaining about.

What a total mess. I have an iMac, a mini-mac, 2 iPads and 2 iPhones. I hope the rest of my Apple system doesn't get wiped out like my iPhones did. Believe me, I will seriously consider any softare "upgrades" from Apple before installing. I will wait awhile to see if there are complaints before I make any changes to any of my systems.

Just adding my voice to the chorus of people upset about the performance of the iPhone 3G running iOS4. I just hope Apple listens.
