Q: Iphone 3G slow after update to IOS4

The upgrade to IOS4 took forever but eventualy was completed succesfully.
But the iphone is very slow with IOS4. It doesn't work as smooth as it used to be. Also new applications such as the iBook application are very slow, doesn't respond smooth on screentaps etc. Who has the same experience?
I'm thinking about going back to version 3.1.3 because IOS4 doesn't add anything to improve the user experience on the iPhone 3G.

I hope Apple will listen to their iphone users and will release an update soon for iOS4 which improves the performance on older iPhones.

    {quote:title=Ian Cashman wrote:}They even recommended that we upgrade to ios4 because it wasn't that that caused the problem. {quote}

I'm amazed that they still recommend this after all this time and the issues that have been reported.

Or should i stick to the 3.1.3. that it has shipped with? I heard the hardware in these is better that the 3G and they are not affected. Is this true?

The 3GS seems to not have exactly the same issues. Read through that forum and see what you find.

Since OS-4 has ruined my phone, I have tried everything Apple support has advised including getting a replacement phone under warranty. None have helped beyond a few days. As much as I liked the iPhone befored it was ruined, I must have a functioning phone; I bought an Incredible yesterday, knowing that I will have to pay a penalty for leaving AT&T 7 months before the end of my contract. As I was doing the paperwork, another Apple customer came in behing me to also dump his iPhone for a droid. For what this has put me through the last 10 weeks and the arogance of Apple not to even admit that there is a problem, I will never buy another Apple product. I have a plan to recoup some of my money lost; I'm shorting Apple stock today.

I just want to add my two cents: my iPhone 3G is barely usable after the iOS4 upgrade, too.

Writing in block capitals is usually taken as equivalent to shouting and is seen as very rude.

However frustrated you are (and I do understand that!) please don't shout at us. We here aren't the problem - we're just trying to exchange info and help each other.

I just hated the OS4 upgrade to the core. My battery drains in a few hours. Texting while listening to music was a dud.
The iphone OS4 doesnt improve the performance one bit. I decided to roll back to 3.1.3 and was successful in doing so. Thank you apple for making things miserable for a couple of months. I can live without folders and playlists compared to the speed of 3.1.3

This is very sad !!! Whenever Apple release a major upgrade on iphone something goes wrong. If you remember last year with the release of v3 (major breakthrough in the phone industry where Apple introduced the "copy""cut""paste" functions) a large number of iphone users complained about missing the wifi reception!!!! And now, the new iOS4 is slowing down our "smartphones" !!
Come on Apple , get involved in this and release a 3G "friendly" version of iOS 4 !! I really like the new folder organization and multiple MS Exchange accounts ,etc, but i hate to have to spent big $$$$ for the new iphone !!
Its obvious that the new iOS is way too much for the poor cpu of the old 3G !!!

obvious, but not necessarily so - given some are not having the problem (it seems) with their 3G 'phones. Sometimes I think this web-site might be a hoax, and the real one is elsewhere - that's not a dig at anyone, just a reflection of how Apple seem to be handling this - how can they be so unresponsive ... ?

I'd be thrilled if they'd just let me go back to where I was before IOS4. Just say it didn't work for me - but good luck to those for whom it did something good - and either allow me back where I was or better still, hold my hand and show me how to go back there.

I'm baffled as to why they seem to be so anti anyone doing that... They'd keep my goodwill and faith in them better that way than what they're doing now.

I think that ALL 3G iphones are having performance issues with the new iOS .. Its that some of them are just "basic" users that did not notice or bother to deal with it... and dont forget that there might be thousands of others that are just not posting anything, so you wouldn't really know how big the problem is . Now there might be some others that can say that their 3G goes normal or even better after the upgrade , but ....... how many are they and most important WHY ??

You couldn't be a more "basic" user than me.

I have never installed any apps beyond those it had installed when I bought it.
I have never put any music or videos onto it (can it even do videos I wonder?)
I have addresses in it. (Ok, there's 1700 of them via mobileme)
    I have emails (2 addresses)
I phone, text and email. And sometimes I take a few photos. Occasionally I'll look at a site on the internet.

That's it. And IOS4 can't run 'em without slowing to an unusable crawl.

Just to say i have done lots of research on this and although technically rumour i find it a little reassuring to read.

    This is from macrumours...

+"A new email from Apple CEO Steve Jobs appears to confirm that the company will soon be issuing a software update to address issues with the iPhone 3G's performance under iOS 4. Late last month, the company acknowledged that it was "looking into" user reports of the issues.+

+The new email came in response to feedback sent by a customer who expressed frustration over the performance of his iPhone 3G, calling it "dog slow" and pointing to problems with system responsiveness when scrolling, zooming, and typing.+

+I've waited patiently through 4.0.1 and 4.0.2, looking for a fix that will make my phone work again. I've read the forums that advise me to jailbreak my phone or use some other method so I can downgrade back to a version of iPhone 3, however I'm not prepared to use a method that is not supported by Apple.+
    +Jobs' response was unsurprisingly terse:+

    +Software update coming soon.+

    +Sent from my iPhone+
+While Jobs did not offer details on the planned software update, he was most likely referring to iOS 4.1, which has been in testing with developers. Anecdotal reports have indicated that the iOS 4.1 betas do seem to be improving performance on the iPhone 3G, but confirmation that the company is addressing the issues will be welcome news to users who have been frustrated by iOS 4 performance on their devices."+

Hope this sets a few minds at rest.

    G
