Q: Iphone 3G slow after update to IOS4

The upgrade to IOS4 took forever but eventualy was completed succesfully.
But the iphone is very slow with IOS4. It doesn't work as smooth as it used to be. Also new applications such as the iBook application are very slow, doesn't respond smooth on screentaps etc. Who has the same experience?
I'm thinking about going back to version 3.1.3 because IOS4 doesn't add anything to improve the user experience on the iPhone 3G.

I hope Apple will listen to their iphone users and will release an update soon for iOS4 which improves the performance on older iPhones.

I really liked my IPhone 3g when I first got it. I was impressed with the apple os so much that I was considering changing my desktop to apple. I now have reconsidered. Putting out an os that is not really backward compatable and telling customers that they should update through itunes is a bad idea. I now dislike the phone and there seems to be no going back to an os that works. Apple should give 3g owners a discount on a phone that works with thier current os or many of us will be headed to droid land. If they fix ios4 so it works with the 3g great but it will not compensate for the months of crappy phone function on a phone I cannot get rid of because of a 2 year contract. It says to me that apple cares very little for it's customers if they cannot run out and buy a new phone to run the latest and greatest new software. There could not have been much testing on the older phones. It is not a real hard to see problem.

OK. We all know just how crappy iOS4 made our 3G phones. Has anyone actually seen a solution put out by apple yet? Not one of those put your phone back to factory and then resync solutions... Have tried that twice and it does not work. Actually had to input my contacts from scratch one of those times. Last time I spoke to a representative, their suggestion was upgrade. I politely informed him/her that I was married, had a mortgage, and had children. I then asked if they would send previously mentioned upgrade to my house free of charge. Unfortunately the representative declined to "give" me one. LOL.
Seriously dissappointed that Apple has yet to provide us with an answer. I end up waiting for just about everything on my phone now. wanna send an mms message to my wife... I better plan it in advance. Like WAAAAAYYYY in advance.

Thx lifehacker, I downgraded back to 3.1.3

Lost a lot of contacts though. Hope to see my phone work like before. It already opens messenger/maps and ipod instantly with no delay.

The streaming video will be followed by A LOT of 3G owners. If the iPhone will be able to do it..

Personally I'll use my iPad to follow the event. Good luck to everybody!

If no update --> go back to 3.1.3 tomorrow.

I followed the steps from Lifehacker to "downgrade" back to OS 3.1.3. My phone is back to normal! Thanks, Lifehacker! When my AT&T contract is up this December, I plan to switch to an Android phone. I love the iPhone OS, but after this (and my experience with the iPhone 4), I am very wary of Apple products and support.

I wouldn't hold my breath that a solution to the 3G os woes will be mentioned today let alone made available. I suspect the hot topic will concern Apple TV and iPad developments.

I do think a fix is being worked on for the next os release but no idea if it will ever really solve all the issues on the 3G or when we'll see it.

My 3G positively flies with 4.0.2 after the reload. Thanks to highdef for his instructions. I found them to be usable and his explanation of the root cause - Upgrade vs. Reload - makes sense.

Since the reload, I've re-sync'd my music, podcasts and apps and the performance remains fast.

Shame on Apple! It's their responsibility to come clean by explaining the issues and the fix in layman's terms. iPhone users shouldn't have to muck through this on their own. Apple has a loyal installed base, at least they used to. They could have minimized the entire issue, but apparently elected not to.

Given the same set of circumstances, I wonder if Motorola would have handled the issue differently. I'm not in the market for a phone, but if I were, I'd take a closer look at devices other than the iPhone.

My recent issues with the 3G and iOS4 made me temporarily forget about the unqualified disaster that is the iPod Shuffle / earbud problem. I bought a Shuffle for my wife awhile back; she went through three Apple buds before buying Belkin.

IMO, the common thread between the Shuffle and iOS4 issues are Apple's stonewalling and failure to address issues that they can't possibly miss. It seems to me that this might work for awhile, but with better designs and more competition in the future, I think this will turn out to be a self-inflicted wound for Apple Computer.

Highdef's instructions can be found on Page 81 of this thread, Posted: Aug 19, 2010 12:17 PM.

I believe his point to be that the G3 Upgrade process is flawed. Rather than Upgraded, the phone must be Restored/Reloaded from scratch.
