Q: Iphone 3G slow after update to IOS4

The upgrade to IOS4 took forever but eventualy was completed succesfully.
But the iphone is very slow with IOS4. It doesn't work as smooth as it used to be. Also new applications such as the iBook application are very slow, doesn't respond smooth on screentaps etc. Who has the same experience?
I'm thinking about going back to version 3.1.3 because IOS4 doesn't add anything to improve the user experience on the iPhone 3G.

I hope Apple will listen to their iphone users and will release an update soon for iOS4 which improves the performance on older iPhones.

Same here my nightmare began while upgrading from nice and snappy 3.1.2 to 4.0. the phone never booted up after the 4.0 upgrade. I would just get a connect to itunes screen on the phone nothing else. I Worked with Apple tech support for 3 days straight trying to fix it. Took it to a store where they were able to install 4.0 and they told me they were aware of some issue which sometimes causes the phone to not upgrade on a windows machine! Anyway even after the 4.0 upgrade the phone became extremely slow and no top of that it would just shut off once it would lock and I would have to hard reset it to get back into it...for some reason that stopped happening after a few days.

The phone was so slow though that i decided to put 3.1.3. I found the instructions online and restored the phone to the 3.1.3 OS. My phone is still slow not sure why but I am hoping 4.1 will fix the issue.

I just updated to iOS 4.1 (I'm a registered developer with Apple) I can tell you from my preliminary testing that this update will fix everyone's problems. I will have more updates soon, as I still feel it's a little early to tell. I'm not 100% sure if it's just the reboot which is included with the upgrade or if the 330MB software update actually made the difference. However, what I AM sure of is the following...

Text messaging is MUCH faster - the letters all type when I touch them. No more pressing the letter and waiting three seconds for each letter.

Mail is much faster. When I am in my mailbox and go from account to account or even from folder to folder, it responds right away instead of just sitting there, looking at me.

Web browsing is MUCH faster. I can actually navigate on the web now, with MULTIPLE pages open at the same time! I could not even have one page open prior to this update without it taking about 15 to 20 seconds for that page to load. While this page was loading, I was unable to pich to zoom also. Now, that has been fixed.

Switching between app pages is MUCH smoother. The last page will actually "bounce" back when you try to swipe to the right of it again. I haven't seen my p hone do that in about 2 months. I'm so happy!

When I press the home button, all of my app pages actually fly by and it takes me right to the home screen again. Just like it did prior to the 4.0 update!

As I said before, I will continue to test and let you all know if this is the end all fix for the sad 3G issue.

    Geee, that's great news.

I upgraded to iOS 4, and literally have hated my phone since. I don't even bother taking it with me out of the car anymore. It's as useful as the early motorola LED phones.

I reset to recovery, reinstalled, removed ALL music and movies, and only had the basic apps I need, and the **** thing still takes 15 seconds to launch email, and forget about trying to go into another app while it's checking said email accounts.

I hate threaded conversations with email, and I wish I could turn it off, because the phone is so **** slow, that trying to navigate inside the email threads is a lesson in futility.

To Steve Jobs: No, I won't buy your iPhone 4. Sorry - you can't force me to upgrade with ***** software. Seriously, NOBODY tested it and then couldn't fix it for months?

My contract with AT&T is up in December, and I plan on ditching Apple in the mobile space. Windows Phone 7 doesn't look half bad, and I'm sure Microsoft's hardware partners will test software before they recommend it.

Yes, you can have my stuff - the 3G iOS4 phone

I had the same issue and suffered with a brutally slow iphone 3G for a couple months now. I just downgraded my phone back to IOS 3 and it works great like it used to. Here is instructions on how to do it:

    http://www.maclife.com/article/howtos/howdowngrade_your_iphone_3g_ios313

I can live without the new features (folders were kind of a pain anyway).

My phone was so painful I was going to upgrade to the Iphone 4 right away (if there were any available), but there weren't. Now that my Iphone is back to IOS3 and working well, I think I'll just wait it out for the next Iphone hardware as they should have the issue with it worked out.

Not impressed with Apple on this as I loved my Iphone and they made it almost unbearable to use.

Hopefully this downgrade option will help some others to get their usable Iphone back!!

Your attempt at good PR is a load of crap. For one, there is no 4.1 update. It's 4.0.2. Second even if you are claiming greatness from the latest update, you are completely wrong!

My 3G is absolutely screwed and has not been quick, responsive or anything else for that matter since I updated to 4.0.2. If I could shove this phone up Apple's @ss I would.

What is astonishing is that there is NO fix for something that seems so easy to fix. And getting answers from anyone (Apple or my cell carrier) is impossible. Everyone is an idiot.

I can honestly say that I've never despised any Apple product I've ever purchased - until now. After applying the iOS4 update, my iPhone 3G has become completely useless. It's so slow, it's not even worth unlocking anymore.

If Steve had to use this phone every day, he'd be firing people left-and-right.

Congratulations Apple, you've now driven me to Android. I hope current 3GS and 4G users are seeing their future in this thread. Unless you have the newest model, Apple could care less about you.

DennisMichael, you should do your homework so you don't look foolish in a forum. Do yourself a favor and google ios 4.1 Then, wait a few more days until it's available to the public, and then update your phone. This will solve your problems. And in the future, please gather your facts before you reply.
