Q: Iphone 3G slow after update to IOS4

The upgrade to IOS4 took forever but eventualy was completed succesfully.
But the iphone is very slow with IOS4. It doesn't work as smooth as it used to be. Also new applications such as the iBook application are very slow, doesn't respond smooth on screentaps etc. Who has the same experience?
I'm thinking about going back to version 3.1.3 because IOS4 doesn't add anything to improve the user experience on the iPhone 3G.

I hope Apple will listen to their iphone users and will release an update soon for iOS4 which improves the performance on older iPhones.

yep, quite agree - the comparison we'd like to see is iOS 4.1 with OS 3.1.3 ...

who cares how 4.1 compares with 4.0 - people with 3G iPhones would have been quite happy to be told iOS4 wasn't for them, that they'd have to stay with 3.1.3 ...

if downgrading back to 3.1.3 is too-diffiicult, for Apple, then - since iPad has its own iOS version, it seems - why couldn't the 3G iPhone have its own version of iOS4, too - bet it would be 95% common, so why not ?

fingers are crossed for iOS4.1 on 3G, but pardon our scepticism - once bitten, and all that !

re-reading this thread just makes me sad. i've downgraded to 3.1.3, and (other than the fact that i can't upgrade my apps and there are a few i can't use 'cause they only work with 4.0) that did seem to solve the problem.

i dunno, maybe this problem isn't as big as we 3g owners think...it doesn't seem to be getting any traction in the press or elsewhere. i hope apple is actually working on a fix.

You've not re-read very well. You've not read the news, too...

Apple will give the 3G users a fix (4.1) next week. Good luck to us all!

My 3G was still working pretty well on iOS 4 but I decided to try the 'highdef' procedure just to lay down a clean version of the OS and it worked well and was completed in a few hours. I do notice that my 3G is even faster now and will have to see if this lasts over time.

I might even want to do this for iOS 4.1 but I wait and see how my 3G is after that upgrade.

I also installed a fresh copy from restore to factory settings... It does seem a little faster but still laggy as ****!

Been licking my wounds for 2 months since Apple suffocated my 3G. Disbelief, anger, sadness, self-reflection on why am I so upset my phone lies bleeding.... I just re-watched the 1984 Apple release commercial....welled up all my old love for my favorite brand. Sitting at my drawing table hoping that the software update next week will release me from my daily 2-minute hate.

Anyone ever read section 7 of the warranty for the iphone 3g?
pertaining to the software, it's really good... from the way i am reading it, basically looks like we bought a used car as is with no warranty. It can be found here

I have been having the same problem also. In addition, Evens I add to my iPhone calendar no longer sync with my MobileMe account. Frankly, this reminds a little bit of the PC Vista fiasco. My iPhone is not just slow, it routinely crashes. It is so slow it is virtually unusable. Am waiting for the upgrade but if that doesn't work will have to downgrade.

I loved my iphone 3g until this ios4 b.s. and yea, I realize it is probably time to upgrade to the iphone 4, but the fact that apple has dumped on a loyal customer by putting out software that basically renders my previously speedy 3g a worthless brick makes me reconsider my allegiance to this company. Even worse, is the fact that in order to revert to the previous software, I would have to jump through some hoops which are not recommended nor endorsed by apple, which I really don't want to do. Is this some scheme to render iphone 3g useless and thereby force everyone to upgrade to the ridiculously expensive (and from what i hear, faulty and unreliable) 4g? Seems like it....

Fat chance of Apple listening and actually doing something to rectify the problem they have caused (for me too. Now when I receive a call, I swipe to accept it and it kills the call! This is my business phone and they are clients phoning me!). Thanks Apple for so comprehensively denying there is a problem and for stonewalling us all about it. We will no doubt all die of old age before they officially admit to the problem and there is a fix that works because the one APple employee who dared to make a comment in a shop about the 3G/iOS4 debacle told me the iPhone 3G processor was not fast enough to handle the new iOS4 firmware. I don't care if its true or not because what is true is that my 3G is almost useless despite the so-called 'help' being offered via telephone.
You would be better off going to get a Samsung Galaxy S on Android, or even a RIM Blackberry - unless you want to enter into the ridiculous denial along with Apple.

Mines running much better after i performed a restore as a new phone. Turn off auto brightness, also turn off spotlight search and the phone performs okish.

I agree its not a solution but it is running much better after i did a restore.

I guess its like installing windows 7 staight over xp rather than doing a complete fresh install.

Its ok to have your service packs and your windows updates after the install but you are best off doing a fresh install for a compeltely new operating system.

I have to agree. I did a restore and my 3G is running much better. I do have spotlight search off but that's all. I have never used it anyway. Others have not seen this but at least we have working phones now. Hopefully the iOS 4.1 release will fix the issues and everyone's 3G will be working well again!

It is very very slow but even for standart things like taking photo, sms, entering the camera etc.

I would like have my 3.1.3 version back!!!!

    Slow!!! Slow!!! Slow!!!
