Q: Iphone 3G slow after update to IOS4

The upgrade to IOS4 took forever but eventualy was completed succesfully.
But the iphone is very slow with IOS4. It doesn't work as smooth as it used to be. Also new applications such as the iBook application are very slow, doesn't respond smooth on screentaps etc. Who has the same experience?
I'm thinking about going back to version 3.1.3 because IOS4 doesn't add anything to improve the user experience on the iPhone 3G.

I hope Apple will listen to their iphone users and will release an update soon for iOS4 which improves the performance on older iPhones.

OK. Apple Moderator removed my previous posts.. Difference of opinion on why.. Atleast it may show that Apple is monitoring this thread... anyways.. here is where I stand on trying to get my phone back to working like it used to.
Please note I tried many of the solutions listed here in this thread. Many of them worked for a short time. Issues always came though.
As of this morning, I was running iOS-4.0.1 and I called Apple Support. (not the first time I have contacted them) The representative nicely stated that I needed to update my phone to 4.0.2. Did not argue with him or anything. Simply thanked him and got off the phone and updated my phone. This was about 2 to 3 hours ago. I am already seeing certain issues come back. When Locked and attempting to unlock, slidebar is unresponsive and/or appears to lock halfway across bar for several seconds when unlocking. Safari is already crashing or becoming unresponsive. ATT Mark the Spot App crashes and wont even load.
    Any new ideas?

I don' understand why support omits to say that this week (could be tomorrow) 4.1 will be available to 3G in order to try to fix the issues reported in this thread...

So let's wait a little bit more.

I am waiting and hoping but not to much. Have you seen the test results from gizmodo and other sites? It doesn't look to promising.

This update abruptly made me switch gears from an iPhone fanboy to being completely indifferent about iPhone vs. Droid. My phone is painfully slow. Its faster to mail a letter than to text now. When I called Apple support they told me to upgrade to .02 to increase the speed and the increase was negligible. Most upsetting is that there is no legitimate, Apple supported way to simply go back to the old operating system. Apple knows this is an issue...look at the number of comments here!

I've seen, but I think that only the individual feeling with 4.1 on our 3G phones will tell. Everyone of us uses the phones in quite different ways, so what I expect happy and unhappy people, tomorrow.

I do hope that happy people will be the most part. In any case a jump back to 3.1.3 is still possible for those who will be unhappy. From this point of view, I think Apple would be great if made possible to go back to this version.

    We'll see.

Emphasis is mine. Where did I see this before? Oh yeah, the last time I took a suggested upgrade. Won't do it again on my MAc, iPad, or anything else until I research.

"ViOS 4 works with iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, and i+Phone 3G+. Not all features are compatible with all devices. For example, multitasking is available only with iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS."

    Me too!

I have given up ... and gone back to iOS 3.1.3! It was a pain in the proverbial to revert to the old operating system. But I got there. I will NOT be upgrading to iOS 4.x - until it has proved itself on the iPhone 3G.

The 4.1 update has been posted. It took about 15 minutes to download and install. So far, it seems to have brought a little life back to my 3G. Though it was not as slow as others I am seeing minimal delays in texting, emails and apps. Time will tell.

Installed 4.1 one one iPhone. Still slow if compared to 3.1.3 (have another iPhone running 3.1.3)

I did the same and upgrade to 4.1 too. It is a little bit faster but still slower than 3.1.3. It took a good 10s to open messages and I've switched off auto-capitalization, auto-correcton and check spelling.

I'll see what happens in the next few days.

The 4.1 upgrade didn't do the trick. It's still a pain. I don't know why Apple does this.

I have updated to iOS 4.1 a bit faster, I wonder if it has to do with the free ram? one app I have saw that I have 2 mb free & 21 mb inactive on the ram in the iPhone 3G, I wonder if that has anything to do with it.

ITunes is telling me 4 hours to download 4.1. Yikes. Pays to be first in line.
