Sep 9, 2010 2:09 PM in response to Xplorer77by Amazing Bass,I spoke too soon when I said 4.0.1 sped up my 3G iPhone.
The speed gradually decreased to the point where I'd walk away and come back and pages would still be loading.
After installing 4.1, speed came back...hope it stays.
New thought...battery meter stopped working , phone died. )-; -
Sep 9, 2010 4:12 PM in response to Xplorer77by sanfrandan234,I have had the same problems everyone is complaining about with their 3G when they upgrade to the IOS4 software. I did a few of the "tricks" I read about to fix-nothing worked. Made an appointment at the Apple Genius Bar and they told me that I would just have to wait for a software update and that hopefully that would happen soon. I am waiting and growing more frustrated that at times I cannot use most of my iphone functions (cannot access Safari, app store, etc.) If this is apple's way of trying to get me to upgrade my phone it is not going to work. I will not replace a phone that is 1 year old because of faulty software that I upgraded to. Had I know about this I never would have upgraded my software. I put this complaint on my facebook warning all 3G users. If they do not fix this issue this will be the last apple product I ever buy. I am sick -
Sep 9, 2010 4:19 PM in response to sanfrandan234by richardc1983,Another one...
There is a fix,a new software release is now on itunes but it is reccomended to do a restore of the phone rather than just update as its like putting windows vista onto a computer that has windows 2000 on, you cant just upgrade you need to do a fresh install. -
Sep 9, 2010 4:43 PM in response to Xplorer77by lusciatti,I did a restore using iOS 4.1 today and my 3G is back to iOS 3 speed again! This is GREAT! -
Sep 9, 2010 5:16 PM in response to Xplorer77by TomNYC,The iOS 4.1 update has finally fixed the instability problem with both of my 3G iPhones. I upgraded both phones immediately when it was released and have been using them ever since with none of the same sluggishness and unresponsiveness.
I would have been a lot happier about this update had Apple not left 3G iPhone owners in the dark and with barely functioning phones for the past 3+ months. -
Sep 10, 2010 1:33 AM in response to Amazing Bassby roofgardener,Abbout midday yesterday, before i had the chance to update to 4.1, I started getting messages saying my USB device (i.e. iPhone) was drawing too much power and had to be disconnected. I refuse to think there is an hardware issue as my phone is unchanged in any way and I have never dropped it etc. All USB ports and cables work fine with other devices.
I would guess this is connected to the OS stuff that has been going on lately, has anyone else had similar issues recently? -
Sep 10, 2010 10:47 AM in response to Xplorer77by bpdresser,I ran the update on a 3g to 4.1 and still had performance/lag issues. This morning, I did a restore and things are much improved. (I've also kept spotlight disabled on everything). Camera still lags (but now only about 5 secs), but texting no longer takes 10 seconds to load. One odd thing is that while some custom ringtones still appear through the itunes interface and show as synced, I'm unable to assign them to my contacts. Overall though, the 3g is probably 90% of what it was originally. Way better than before. -
Sep 10, 2010 1:11 PM in response to bpdresserby Tay2001,My Wife and Son's 3G's have been pretty poor since upgrading to 4.02, I have applied 4.1 to my Wifes phone and it does seem to have improved performance. My wife is pretty tolerant of technology but when she whines about it going slow you know its bad..
Alas the upgrade on my son's failed and I'm in the middle of restoring it now but it should be 4.1 at the end of it in a hour or so once its all restored!.
I have to agree with your comments, it's not fantastic but its a bucket load better.

Good way to describe it. -
Sep 10, 2010 7:27 PM in response to cliffby AndySA,Despite many positive comments, suggesting the Iphone 3G problems have been resolved with IOS4.1, I for one am not seeing any improvement whatsoever.
My phone still intermiittently stalls for up to several seconds, whilst going from menu to menu, even then the menu transition is jerky. Takes several seconds to enter Settings, Messages etc
How Apple can get this so wrong amazes me. I mean, the only additional functionality the 3G has really gained with the introduction of IOS4, were the folders. With the introduction of 4.0, the 3G didnt get Multitasing, didnt get Backgrounds and now with 4.1 we dont have Game Centre.
So what the heck is this device doing, to chew up so many resources, yet give little additional functionality compared to IOS3.1.3?
Battery life on the 3G with 4.1? Also no better. Just got 12 hours from charge to depletion, having made only 2 calls, no notifications enabled, WiFi off.
Is anyone else with a 3G also experiencing continued problems, since upgrading to IOS4.1? -
Sep 10, 2010 7:38 PM in response to AndySAby AndySA,Further to my last post, I suggest the problems plaguing the Iphone are not isolated to the Firmware alone.
With my experience with the Iphone 3G over the last two years and numerous firmware updates later, I am strongly of the opinion that there is some fundamental problems with the whole Itunes / Iphone update, backup and sync processes.
Similar battery life, speed and lag issues have plagued the Iphone 3G since day one, with each successive update either making the problems worst, or resolving them temporarily..... until the next update when the same problems kreep in all over again. Well at least that is my experience.
Apple, I really feel your Dev Team are looking in the wrong place, or only addressing half the problem. -
Sep 10, 2010 9:23 PM in response to Xplorer77by jpharper999,Updated to iOS-4.1 yesterday morning (Wednesday). Saw some improvement right away but not as much as I was hoping for. Since then, performance has stayed about the same so far. I have noticed that while Safari still crashes on a regular basis or freezes for long periods of time when I want to zoom in or slide the view over to another section of the page. My photos are still extremely blurred and I expect I will have to remove them and reload them yet again and hope for the best. My slide bar still freezes when I need to unlock my phone but for not quite so long (atleast I have not accidently opened up the emergency call functionality like before the update) Opening mail seems to work ok but nothing to jump for joy about. It is still relatively slow in going from the view to a mailbox's inbox even after the messages have fully downloaded. My games such as backgammon, solitaire, and hearts, still crash occassionally (they did not crash under 3.1.2).
All in All... it aint perfect, but atleast it's usable.
I may post more in the next few days with more detail on usability and any other issues I find. -
Sep 11, 2010 1:31 AM in response to irons1980by ernieboy,The procedure should be, download the 4.1 update first, never choose the ‘Download and Update’ buttton, just choose ‘Download’. Then at your time of convenience, first restore your phone to the factory state, that is choosing the ‘Restore’ button in iTunes, it follows that this will do a complete restore and then it will automatically update the phone to 4.1. After that you will have an iPhone with 4.1, absolutely clean.
it will prompt you to recover from choice all all the back ups you had. Obviously you should choose the most recent one.
The whole process lasted less than an hour for me. -
Sep 11, 2010 4:40 AM in response to ernieboyby step_andy,4.1 is big improvement on 4.0-4.02 but still not as fast as 3.1.3. Even after the Restore option, SMS, camera and e-mail still take several seconds to kick in. -
Sep 11, 2010 6:35 AM in response to roofgardenerby Christopher John Hunter,we've had this with our iMac, now & again, seemingly at random, ever since we got it - had to unplug & wait a bit, then try again ... not had it for some months, though, so perhaps an update fixed it ...
