Sep 11, 2010 7:06 AM in response to Xplorer77by n3nto,After having had a crippling IOS 4.0 on my 3G for such a long time I installed 4.1
Version 4.1 is much better than 4.0 but NOT as fast as 3.1.
Most importantly the clock/calendar/messages/contacts and settings work reasonably well and the OS feels more refined.
In general the Iphone 3G is usable once again (even if it does stutter a bit) so if you have IOS4.0 on your Iphone 3G I would definitely update it.
I just bought an Android phone because I was P** at Apple but I might keep the Iphone 3G as a second/backup phone. -
Sep 11, 2010 8:34 AM in response to Xplorer77by lusciatti,My 3G is still working GREAT on iOS 4.1! -
Sep 11, 2010 10:06 AM in response to lusciattiby tcphoto1,Dear Mr. Apple,
I have bought your computers, software and now your iphone for over sixteen years. Two of the computers were replaced because they were lemons while another, the Powerbook G3 Wallstreet edition had defective hinges that you refused to recall. The Powerbook was simply trashed and I mistakenly purchased another Apple machine.
Now, after buying an iphone you decide to make my phone obsolete in order to sell me a new model. I may be one evolutionary step away from dragging my knuckles on the ground but I am smart enough to not give you any more of my money. Loyalty is a two way street and I now chose to move on. I will be very happy to contact Adobe and do a cross platform move to the other side of the fence. I wish you well but not at my expense. -
Sep 11, 2010 12:12 PM in response to Xplorer77by missionarymac,I have read with much interest all the responses regarding the 3G problem since O/S 4. I too have wished I had done as I usually do and waited to see the results before updating my 3G but this time I just went for it. I have had nothing but good out of my Apple products and till now have not had a problem with any updates to any of their products. I have had multiple problems with PC, Microsoft updates and etc over the past so Apple's track record has been very good for me. Still this has been disappointing to say the least and I have wished I could go back to O/S 3 but all the attempts I have made using all the helps have not allowed me to be successful to put the phone back. So I have done all the little fixes and helps listed and for me they have made some improvements. Still it seems sad that I have a phone that is capable of doing many things and did before that I now have to turn off just to have a usable phone function etc. I still have my BB and have seriously thought of going back to using it but I do like the Iphone over all. Just wish it could be back to it's old self again. Will I quit using Apple products over this incident? No, as I have had far more problems with other products with the exception of my BB products. But I will no longer take for granted the upgrades that are put out that are supposed to be so wonderful. An old adage comes to mind, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it"! Maybe that is a good lesson for all of us 3G users but a little to late at this point for most of us. Live and learn! I am still hoping for a complete fix one day and hopefully soon. -
Sep 11, 2010 3:16 PM in response to missionarymacby kut2000,I just installed the 4.1 update and my 3G is WAY better. I can't say for sure if it is as fast as it was before 4.0 because, honestly, it's been so long I can't remember. -
Sep 12, 2010 2:43 AM in response to kut2000by Christopher John Hunter, not sure we're brave enough to try iOS4.1 yet (we're with 4.0.2 & 3.1.3 at the moment) but we were in-town a few days ago, taking our MBP for repair (new logic board) & while we were there had a look at what was in-store -
iPhone 4 looks nice & seems to work well, first time we'd seen it, and when we asked about it we were told they were sold-out with any that come-in being gone in no-time, even now ... so we didn't have the opportunity to not buy one, or two (our 3Gs being on monthly holding arrangements, and now way beyond the end of their original contracts) ...
the new iPods Nano & Shuffle were just in, and they played great ... so when Apple waived the labour-charge on the MBP (we should have asked why, but the store was in the process of being moved a few doors down, so they had no stowage space & we'd had to make two journeys) we broke our resolution and bought one of the former, and a few other bits & pieces ...
hmmm ... weakness even this thread had not dispelled !

PS: when we mentioned our 3Gs in the store, the lass said straight-away to update to iOS4.1 - ie: she seemed well-aware of the issue - and when I then said once-bitten / twice shy, she clearly understood what I meant ... -
Sep 13, 2010 8:00 AM in response to Xplorer77by jpharper999,about a week has gone by since I updated to 4.1
results are mixed with me. While some functions seem to work better and faster, When I compare it to my wife's (wife is running 3.1.3) hers is faster in most aspects. Her apps very rarely crash at all. Her Safari and txting snap open when called and you can not outpace the phone when you are typing. My Phone on the otherhand (running 4.1 now) has developed a strange habit of locking itself while I am in the middle of doing something on it. Anyone experience this yet? Apps still crash on a regular basis. I am not running any major apps, just basic games and such like hearts or backgammon. Safari still locks up on a regular basis. I can be typing a message and the phone simply freezes. It finally releases and then tries to auto correct. AT&T Mark the Spot App is working now. Don't know why but it simply started working. Still not to happy -
Sep 13, 2010 11:57 AM in response to jpharper999by cliff,Now that I've had 4.1 on my phone for a week I can say it's better than 4.01/02, but not as spunky as 3.1.3. I still get instances of "stickiness" here and there. From using FreeMemory I think there's something going on memory-wise that is not releasing memory or somehow taking unused memory. If I only have Mail and Phone as running processes I can open FreeMemory and see that I have 3 megs of unused memory. Huh? As the program works and clears the unused, it can jump up to 45 megs or so. Then a little later if I feel "stickiness" I can go back to FreeMemory and it's down to 9-12megs. Doing this experiment in 3.1.3 didn't get such fluctuation. I've turned off everything unneeded and don't use folders.
Since my 3G was not one of the worst cases with 4.0 and was somewhat usable, I figure this update has made my phone about 10% better than with 4.0. Overall it's about 85% of how it was with 3.1.3. -
Sep 13, 2010 12:32 PM in response to NotGuiltyby Rebecca O'Rork,I'm having the same problem. It's been "Backing up" for more than 4 hours! How much longer is this going to take!? -
Jul 2, 2015 3:05 AM in response to Xplorer77by userremoved,I also have the 3G iPhone with 4.1 running. The phone is definitely slower at times, some apps crash. Has anyone else realised that the 3GS with the same OS upgrade features 'active apps' found by double clicking the home button and a window scrolls up from the bottom of the screen showing all open applications....iPod etc. It would appear that to speed up re-visiting apps they are not fully closed at 4.0 +. This is fine when using a 3GS as you can access the active apps as described, long touch to display a '-' sign next to them and close them. Without the ability to do this (3G) apps are simply left open and eventually impact performance.....so the question is why 3G phones do not have the same ability to close active apps that 3GS phones do?.......does anyone concur with this idea? -
Sep 14, 2010 4:29 AM in response to Rebecca O'Rorkby NotGuilty,Late to reply,
i was upgrading my iphone from 3.1.3 directly to 4.1. as it is without restore to factory settings or clean install.
it took 3 hours to back alone and 1 hour to install and sync everything back again.

Sep 14, 2010 5:05 AM in response to cliffby Christopher John Hunter, difficult to believe Apple haven't looked after memory usage in getting the app to-market, especially after all the recent nonsense - but then this story has always been difficult to believe, so anything's possible ! -
Sep 14, 2010 5:10 AM in response to userremovedby Christopher John Hunter,double-click of the Home button is an allocatable action on our 'phones - ie: going through Settings / General / Home Button gives a list to choose-from ... not including that option, on our 3G 'phones anyway ...

Sep 16, 2010 12:47 AM in response to Xplorer77by jpharper999,I have had ongoing issues since going to iOS 4.0.1 but since updating to iOS 4.1 something new has cropped up. Been on 4.1 since the day it came out and I was wondering if anyone else had experienced the following.
I have had several incidents of being in the middle of doing something and the phone has simply locked itself forcing me to unlock it again. When I unlock it, it has a completely different app up than the one I was in or no app at all running. On a regular basis, I will lock the phone without any apps running only later to unlock it to find an app running like weather or such.
