Oct 8, 2010 3:26 PM in response to Xplorer77by stockli,4.1 is still sluggish on the 3G.
Theres still a very noticeable difference between 3.1.3 and 4.1. The speed boost from 4.0 to 4.1 was minimal at best.
Still present in 4.1:
- icons still "stuttering" into place when unlocking the phone from standby
- long delays when opening apps
- less free memory when idling compared to 3.1.3
I think this is as good as it gets for the 3G hardware. Considering everything, I'd recommend sticking with 3.1.3.

Oct 10, 2010 2:28 PM in response to stockliby Jonny Apple Seed,i feel your pain. I finally gave up after following the advice of everyone and anyone, including apple employees. Until a new version of the software is released to address the issue, there's not much you can do but do a restore as a new phone every couple of days or downgrade to 3.1.3 -
Oct 11, 2010 11:38 AM in response to Jonny Apple Seedby Serge Issakov,This is unacceptable.
If Apple can't fix iOS 4 to be reasonable on the 3g, what confidence can we have that a future iOS "upgrade" will not turn the iPhone 4 into a brick like the 3g is now?
Is everyone calling Apple to complain, or what? -
Oct 12, 2010 2:02 AM in response to Xplorer77by Gino Iarossi,Hi
I have updated to 4.1 and my 3g is still very very slow. Does anyone know if any future update will help make things any better for 3g users? I don't really want to downgrade to 3.1.3 as many are suggesting -
Oct 12, 2010 2:12 AM in response to Gino Iarossiby Bugfixer,Gino,
have you tried to reinstall from scratch (4.1) instead of updating? My 3G is almost as it was with 3.1.3. Not the same, but almost. -
Oct 12, 2010 2:20 AM in response to Bugfixerby Gino Iarossi,Hi Bugfixer
Well, I'm not sure if what I did was 'right'!
I plugged my iphone in and clicked on restore, but when I got to an option that said restore from backup I clicked that. So I'm not too sure if I have really done it properly. Should I have clicked the 'new iphone' option?
(Thanks for the fast response BTW) -
Oct 12, 2010 2:26 AM in response to Gino Iarossiby Bugfixer,Yes, not from a backup, but as a new Phone. What you can do is backup anyway before to do that and make a second restore, but the first should be done as a new iPhone.
I didn't, anyway, due to the fact I would restore only some applications (I had too many apps). Sync would do the rest. Without restoring from backup, you lose Text messages, anyway. -
Oct 12, 2010 2:29 AM in response to Gino Iarossiby Bugfixer,And don't forget to deselect all Spotlight search, unless is really necessary. This speeds up the iPhone a lot.
Good luck. -
Oct 12, 2010 2:14 PM in response to Xplorer77by step_andy,Restored my wife's 3G with 4.1.
Battery now lasts only 1 day under normal use.
Phone is less than 6 months old - swapped by Apple as a refurb.
Does warranty cover battery? -
Oct 12, 2010 2:28 PM in response to Xplorer77by Trevor Churchley,With over 300k replies to this thread, you'd think that Apple would realise that they've screwed up with the lastest upgrade for 3GS and put out a fix. A plot to get 3GS users to upgrade to iPhone 4? Hmmmm!
I agree with many of the blogs below. Also:
- my 3G coverage seems to have deteriorated badly and everytime it loses the network, a really annoying warning screen appears (A LOT!) providing an option to change carriers - AS IF!
- when setting the alarm clock for workdays, the alarm goes off 1 hour prior to the scheduled time
- on the day I upgraded, the battery drained from 90% to 13% in the blink of an eye. The phone is only a year old so it shouldn't be battery wear and tear
COME ON APPLE - DON'T FORGET THE 3GS USERS - IT'S HARD TO UPGRADE WHEN YOU'RE STUCK ON A 2-YEAR PHONE PLAN!!! -
Oct 12, 2010 8:41 PM in response to Xplorer77by kenju4u,I am in the same boat as you guys! Just keeping this post going...i upgraded a perfectly fine 3.1.2 to 4.0 which became unusable. I downgraded to 3.1.3 but its still very slow. Learning to live with it, but I wont forgot this.
My Next phone will not be a iphone. It will be a Android!!! -
Oct 13, 2010 5:43 AM in response to Xplorer77by Unforgiven,I've tried multiple times to upgrade to all renditions of 4.x all with the same results (either bugs like a blank calendar or my battery being drained after a few hours of use). The answer is downgrade or stay on 3.1.3 period.
It's time to face facts that Apple has left many of us high and dry that use the 3G. When I finally came to grips with the fact that I have a 5 month old 3G that will ONLY work properly on 3.1.3 I stopped stressing out.
As long as apps continue to be released and work with 3.1.3 I'll be ok. Once we get to the point where apps no longer work and are only being released for 4.x, it will be time to drop this phone and head to an Android.
I'm trying to convert my friends and family over from a PC based platform to Apple products over the past year. Makes it really difficult to have an embarrassment in customer support like this looming. No excuses and no BS here, Apple left us out in the cold. I love my iPhone 3G still, but Apple, this will be the last product I purchase from you! -
Oct 13, 2010 12:52 PM in response to Xplorer77by Nimster,I have an iPhone 3G and have the same exact problems as everyone else when I updated to OS4. The phone has literally become unusable. Apps freeze on me constantly, calls are dropped, and nothing works right.
What really frustrates me is Apple. They're response to this has been disgraceful. It's almost as if they're forcing our hand to buy their latest and greatest when I haven't even had the phone for 2 years! What really got me was the the snub I got at the "genius" bar at the Apple Store. Some little snot nosed kid said there's nothing they can do, and even had the nerve to do a couple quick things on my phone and told me "it works fine."
Needless to say I'm through with Apple. I've been a customer for over 15 years and this is it. I'm not giving my money to a company that treats is customers like this. -
Oct 15, 2010 5:51 AM in response to Howardswebby AndySA,The expensive bricks many of us have been left with as a result of this mess, is totally unacceptable. The situation only worstened by the lack of any acknowledgement.

Oct 16, 2010 8:59 PM in response to Xplorer77by Shelia Addison,Another 3G user here who got no relief from the most recent iOS update. I continue to get apps hanging while opening, extreme slowness in apps, screens that freeze (typing in search fields such as in Safari, Maps, or Google often results in a single letter on the "keyboard" magnifying... and then sitting there, staring at me, while the keyboard refuses to accept any other input for 15-20 seconds), on and on. I am only a year into owning this phone, and into my AT&T contract. I have been a dedicated user of Apple products for a decade and a half, but this is beyond disappointing.
