Oct 17, 2010 8:57 AM in response to Shelia Addisonby Digital Dude,In *my opinion*, the software update was partially designed to stimulate 3G owners to upgrade to the iPhone-4.
Heaven knows that I need an updated device for my international travels, but I’m not at all happy with Apple’s strategy these days. I had my fingers crossed for the Nokia N8 but its software is actually worst than the iOS. I won’t consider Android due to its lack of any central oversight. That leaves the upcoming Windows-7. Unfortunately and initially, it’s going to be like having dash-one performance in a dash-five world.
As much as I hate to admit it, the somewhat fragile iPhone-4 is the most logical solution for current Mac owners'.

Dan

Oct 17, 2010 8:57 AM in response to Digital Dudeby Bugfixer,I don't think so. Due to the fact that many people are happy (almost) with this new update (and I'm talking about 4.1), I think that all those who have not had a solution in the upgrade 4.0.x to 4.1 are using some functions still buggy or something.
I use the phone, send text messages, use e-mail, with both WiFi and 3G, surf the web, listen to music and use some applications, including Goggle maps.
My iPhone 3G has been bought in Agust 2008, so my battery lasts only a couple of days, maybe less.
So what is the reason that the SAME PHONE used from different people has a so different behavior? If we assume that the hardware is the same, there must be some software problem.
It's clear that the way I use (as others) the iPhone 3G does not generate problems, other people not.
Now this topic would be more interesting if we declared the way we use the iPhone, maybe there is a connection; I think there is a common use that generates these problems.
Opinions?

Oct 17, 2010 9:19 AM in response to Bugfixerby blinking,Bugfixer, you are convinced that the phone is perfectly okay.
You post repeatedly that your phone is okay. To each person who comes on here saying that they are having a problem you repeat the same thing over and over - that the phone works fine. Which it doesn't (and I do mean with the latest upgrade 4.1)
I - and many other posters HAVE described what we use the phone for and still you keep posting that WE must be doing something wrong without coming up with any concrete suggestions. It's becoming insulting.
Obviously you cannot and will not accept that some people have a real problem and you are starting to be every bit as annoying as Apple themselves. -
Oct 17, 2010 9:28 AM in response to Bugfixerby Digital Dude,Overall slow stuttered performance indicative of a device that’s fast becoming underpowered to support most every function from looking up contacts to using apps.
It’s completely reasonable when one considers the numerous app updates that provide more functionality. The issue in my view is that Apple should had either called it quits on updates past 3.1 or provided 3G specific updates. The bundled one-size-fits-all simply isn’t the best approach. I spent the good part of a Saturday removing the 4.0 update and re-installing the 3.1 OS back on my phone. I know folks with a 3G who are using the 4.1 update and it performs slower than my resurrected 3.1 OS.
There is simply no way I’ll trust Apple again with this issue. I’ve been a loyal Apple user since 1984 but this whole iPhone-4 & 3G update conundrum has really turned me off.
As I suggested, it’s not unreasonable to expect slower performance on the ageing 3G rather, it was Apple’s approach to the update stradagy and overall performance expectation. When one considers the problems with the rollout of iPhone-4, the last thing I expected was a follow-on debacle with hosing of the 3G’s. There was a time when Apple made things that ‘just work’.

Dan

Oct 17, 2010 9:24 AM in response to Digital Dudeby blinking,I haven't seen anything which makes me think that this was a deliberate act on Apple's part. But I do think they have made a big mistake. I am forming the view that they will not admit to that error which means we are left with the option of either downgrading to 3.1.3 or buying a new phone - both unpleasant options. -
Oct 17, 2010 9:28 AM in response to Xplorer77by Apple a day,I think It could be something with the amount of free ram available
Tho what might help is if we describe some things about the phones, like # of apps, free space etc, try to narrow it down -
Oct 17, 2010 9:28 AM in response to Digital Dudeby blinking,In my case I have no apps beyond those it shipped with so mine should perform fine! You may call the 3G 'ageing' but I'd rather expected that a phone would continue working for longer than this - and it was doing so prior to the Apple-promoted upgrade.
I agree I won't trust their updates again. Until now I happily agreed to any update that came along from them. Not any longer! -

Oct 17, 2010 9:34 AM in response to blinkingby Apple a day,I have an app (its 99 cents) that shows it, I just rebooted and have watched the free ram go from 30 mb to 1 or 2 mb free
Here is the app http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/istat-sys-monitoring-battery/id303034517?mt=8 not sure if I am allowed to post that kind of thing (there maybe others I am not sure) -

Oct 17, 2010 9:50 AM in response to blinkingby Christopher John Hunter, well, I've been through all the pain of iOS 4, and since 4.1 it's been OK - not quite as fast as my wife's that's still on 3.1.3, but OK ...
have they been trying to force people off 3Gs to 4s - can't really see it myself, not least because many 3G owners will still be early in their contracts, which could be up to two years long ...
so, it's a big mystery why Apple, who have always made such a very big point of pointing the user at the centre of things, have acted as they have ... we're still big fans of most of what they do, but we've held off updating our laptops & desktop, and a few non-trivial accessories, including two iPhone 4s, because of this, and it seems likely many will have done the same ...
BTW, since 4.1, we've noticed there's usually (not always) more free & inactive memory than we used to see before ... that is, when occasionally we check (we use an app that calls itself "Scan lite" to do this) ...

That's interesting because I've found since 4.0 and even with 4.1 that if my phone starts to act squirrelly I can open FreeMemory and it shows my available RAM down to low single figures. The app then frees the memory and the phone acts normal. Force quitting Safari and iPhone apps makes a difference in performance. I can't understand why those apps (or any apps) remain open when not being used on a device that does not support multi tasking. -
Oct 17, 2010 10:28 AM in response to blinkingby Bugfixer,Dear blinking,
I sincerely would not offend or insult anyone... I was just trying to understand, simple as it is; I've not said that the other users do something wrong (ho you could?, please define "wrong").
What I'm trying to understand is where's the problem here. I've overused mt iPhone in these two years, with some small problems. 4.0.1 killed my phone and as many of you, I was really upset. 4.1 fixed many (but not all) the problems for me.
Maybe from my messages does not emerge, but I'm really sorry for you guys. But I disagree when somebody says that this is a plan from Apple for making us jump on iPhone 4.
I'll continue to lurk this thread, thanks to everybody for your opinion.
