Q: Iphone 3G slow after update to IOS4

The upgrade to IOS4 took forever but eventualy was completed succesfully.
But the iphone is very slow with IOS4. It doesn't work as smooth as it used to be. Also new applications such as the iBook application are very slow, doesn't respond smooth on screentaps etc. Who has the same experience?
I'm thinking about going back to version 3.1.3 because IOS4 doesn't add anything to improve the user experience on the iPhone 3G.

I hope Apple will listen to their iphone users and will release an update soon for iOS4 which improves the performance on older iPhones.

looking at it ten minutes ago, it was hovering around 2MB free, now it's around double that, and I'm not aware I'm doing anything different with it ... now it's around 2MB again ... now it's over 3MB, and all I'm doing is watching it ... and inactive is around 8MB ... and now, a few minutes later, they're around 3MB & over 9MB respectively ...

whatever, not sure I understand what the four categories stand-for - ie: free, inactive, active, and wired ... current readings for which are around 3MB, 9MB, 16MB, and 26MB, respectively ...

if I free memory moderately (15MB target) those last figures become around 15MB, 6MB, 9MB, 26MB, with the first dropping slowly as I watch ... after a minute or two it's down to under 14MB ...

    who knows ! (?)

    and after checking e-mail etc, it's back to 3MB, 10MB, 12MB, 28MB, respectively ...

Well, we have two 8Gig 3G phones. Both working on 4.1 very well. 4.0.x was a disaster but not so for 4.1. Btw I have 32 apps and my wife has 25. We both use our phones extensively each day (web, e-mail, text, phone, apps, wifi and 3G). Is 4.1 as fast as 3.1.3, I don't know as that was months ago but if I can't recall it means it is certainly acceptable.

I agree there seem to be people with lots of problems but I believe the majority are ok with 4.1. As someone said forums are usually used for problems as opposed to saying "all is good".

Smart phones are still in their infancy and the 3G, while still new, is also now 2 generations back. I am fortunate in that our phones work fine and are also 1 1/2 yrs old so we can upgrade to the ver 4 in 6 months.

Thanks and I hope there is a solution/cause found to the others.

Seems Apple didnt like my previous post and have edited the other 90% of it out, which suggested something along the lines of a "consolidation".

Maybe too close to the bone!

Hmm, just made a post critical of Apple's handling of this, now I can't find it.

I'd be crazy to buy any more Apple products if all I can expect is abdonment.

I am extremely disappointed with the performance and support of the Iphone 3G since the release of OS4. We LOVED our phones and were avid supporters, now we feel jilted.
I have spent hours on the phone with Technical Support trying to resolve the issues which began with the update or our phones to OS4. We have updated to 4.1 and still our phones performance has not returned to the speed and consistent performance we had prior to the update to OS4.

    * Phone access and operation moves at a snail’s pace!! Phone freezes during calls causing dropped calls. Locks in the the phone app screens... the most important task of an "iPhone" is to be a dependable PHONE!!! and since this update it is not.

    * Apps unresponsive, extremely slow, or constantly locking up the iPhone, including Apple's proprietary apps (messages, phone, camera, settings, maps) ---- up to 30+ seconds to open standard iPhone apps... thats just crazy
I just timed opening several App - Text(8sec) Mail (7sec)
Forget searching the internet typing in the search bar takes forever... but didn't before the update

    * Reset of the iPhone now required on almost a daily basis.

    * Navigation is considerably slower than before the update

In a nutshell this software "upgrade" has been a nightmare for 3g owners.
Apple needs to acknowledge there is a BIG problem and fix it.
We were all set to buy two new iPhone 4's once eligible for upgrade, however I can't justify buying anything if Apple does not address these issues and get these phones working as they had.

I keep checking to see if someone has had any luck in updating their 3G to IOS 4.x. I have intentionally not upgrade and staying in 3.1x OS. I also use CraigsPro alot. However, my app will not open for about the week ago or so. I checked the app website and it states the following:
"CRASHES? PLEASE UPDATE THE OS ON YOUR DEVICE

If CraigsPro+ crashes on you device, please update the OS to iOS4.x
If you can't or do not want to update the OS, please wait while Apple reviews and releases the next version of the app that will provide full support for devices running the OS version 3.x. _*ETA is October 25*_ for the next version release."

So I sent them an email which states:
"I bought the CraigsPro App on my iPhone 3G because it is a great product and it was worth the money. However, I use it daily, but it has been down now for the last week and now you say it will be at least another week?! Why did you need to update to IOS 4.x version? All the millions + of the 3G iPhone Apple discussion threads state the same thing (108 pages since June 2010) - that using version IOS 4.x wreaks havoc to 3G phones. Apple has no solution. We have chosen to use v3.1x to be able to use our phones.

If Apple does not update the OS as you website states, we will not be able to us our CraigsPro application. I am already using a free craigslist app to get by and I had considered using other Escargot Studios apps. Oh well."

The bottom line is that the Escargot website states that Apple will be offering a 3.x update in a week ~10/25/2010.

    Is that true Apple techs?

I am afraid to roll back my OS for that reason.... I don't want to go back and then my apps stop working. SO its either stay in a OS that bogs down your phone, crashes, but you get some use out of it OR roll back and risk your apps not working because they have all been updated for the new OS

    What to do ???

I know Apple fix this or post an roll back to 3 with instructions and App downloads to make sure everyone has support versions

if its any help scorpibell, I downgraded to 3.1.3 about a month after iOS4 came out & everything still runs, all the apps that get updated for iphone 4 still work fine.
I dont intend to upgrade my firmware ever again. the only thing id say is back up everything in itunes 1st & including your contacts as its like getting a new phone.

its a bit of a hassle & will take a few hours to set it back up again the way you like it, but the improvment in performance is worth it.

I am getting ready to finally make the plunge to 4.1 because there are features of several apps (and some exclusive apps) that require os4. I am curious if the people who are having "satisfactory" results wiped their device before installing the update. I know when 4.0 first came out I tried to update it but I was getting errors which my friend told me he resolved by removing some apps that were "coded wrong" until it installed.

I am thinking that I might have better luck if I just did a fresh start and reinstalled all my apps under the new OS. Any thoughts/experiences?

There is track of my positive experience on this thread, but I'll summarize.

First, 3.1.3 is better than 4.1, at least from a performance point of view. When I first upgraded to 4.0x I was really upset, but 4.1 fixed almost all issues, so now my 3G is usable again.

According to my experience reinstalling from scratch is the best thing to do in this case. 4.1 is a little bit slower and sluggish than 3.1.3, so expect some delays. Disabling spotlight search can help a lot, disabling push notifications, too.

    Good luck!

Good riddance 4.1, welcome back 3.1.3! I was simply tired of the delayed response to just about every task and I reinstalled 3.1.3 and will be happy with the faster system. Let the hipsters have the latest version, I will wait for the others to test future updates and post their results before upgrading. I will not be bullied into upgrading my phone before it's time. My next eligible upgrade will be with iphone 5 and not a minute earlier and that is only if it's a marked improvement.

I found a FIX to this problem! Not a patch or work-around, but a fix! I got an Android phone, and let my kids play with my old Iphone 3g. Now my phone works WAY better than with IOS 4.1, and even way better than with 3.1x! (And for $50 bucks through Amazon, way better than an Iphone 4 would have too.)

Note: the Galaxy S captivate for AT&T had so many lockdowns and bloatware from the carrier (maybe they've been sleeping with Apple for too long) that it took a bit of effort to break free and use it as designed, but now I am amazed at what this phone can do! To each his own, but this absolutely fixed the problem for me...

I've upgraded to ios4.1 and my 3G still lags constantly. I don't recommend the iPhone to friends anymore. I tell them to buy the android. Apple no longer cares about it's customers.
