Q: Iphone 3G slow after update to IOS4

The upgrade to IOS4 took forever but eventualy was completed succesfully.
But the iphone is very slow with IOS4. It doesn't work as smooth as it used to be. Also new applications such as the iBook application are very slow, doesn't respond smooth on screentaps etc. Who has the same experience?
I'm thinking about going back to version 3.1.3 because IOS4 doesn't add anything to improve the user experience on the iPhone 3G.

I hope Apple will listen to their iphone users and will release an update soon for iOS4 which improves the performance on older iPhones.

I upgraded three days ago. Simply plugged in, started iTunes and followed the prompts. Upgrade took about an hour and reloading music and apps another couple of hours. My iPhone is faster, runs great, no problem with any of the apps, and the phone works fine. Two friends upgraded a little before me and both are happy and not having any problems. All three phones were virgin, never been hacked, no third party software installed. No problems before any of the upgrades and none afterword.

I got it a bit faster now. I moved all photos off my iPhone 3g to my desktop (using image capture on my Mac, and set to delete after transfer (it moves it to a folder I made on the desktop and then). After that reboot the iPhone. Now it is much faster

So I wonder if part of the photo database got damaged a little or something with the photos was slowing it down (took off 203 photos (100.3mb))

My 3G has been so slow in the past week or two that I have had to do hard re-sets almost every other day. I loaded directions in Maps, and the route showed up but the rest of the map would never resolve past fuzzy and pixellated. Searching for an address or location has resulted in the keyboard freezing for 30 seconds or more. Yesterday the Phone app kept freezing and crashing, just trying to make a basic call. I am so tired of this behavior.

As many people here, my iPhone 3G was very slow after update to iOS 4.0. I had hoped that the problem would be corrected with iOS 4.1. But it is still the same.
After a few months, i'm fed up with waiting !

If you feel the same, please join my group on Facebook : "How long will iPhone 3G stay slow with iOS 4.x ?". How many people are we ?

After following this thread for so many weeks, yesterday I decided to try to go back to 3.1.3, in order to really touch with my hands the difference in performance/functionalities with 4.1.

It's early to give a result, but at first glance I've lost a couple of apps that don't work on 3.1.3 (but I can live without). Obviously no folders and many graphical details, Mail is two steps back.

But - that's true - the iPhone now is snappier than ever. I'll evaluate and decide later.

I'm having the same issues. It is dreadfully slow. Sometimes even making phone calls lags. I definitely notice a problem when using the Calendar and in fact I have even stopped adding appointments to it. Yesterday I called my wife (on my iPhone) and had her look at my iCal at home because that is quicker than trying to do it on the iPhone 3G with iOS4+!!!

I don't want to get an iPhone 4 (trying to wait it out for the next gen). But this is driving me crazy.

I´m having the same problem. Since I updated my Iphone to the 4.0 is working really slow. Now I have the 4.1 but still the samew, even I erased all the data because I thought that was too full, but even that didn´t work. There is any way "legally" to do a downgrade to the 3.1?? I have now my Iphone unlocked by the mobile carrier and I don´t want to lose it if I do an "illegally" downgrade.

The 4.1 is much "pretty" than the older one, but really deteriorates the 3G performance.

Same problem here with IOS 4.1 on 3G. iPhone 3G is now an iBrick. Downgrading to an older OS may open you up to vulnerabilities that were addressed in later versions of IOS. I'd rather have a functional iPhone versus something that looks pretty.

I did have 4.1 installed on my 3G phone but over the past few weeks I found it was getting slower. So today I did a fresh install of 3.1.3. It's much snappier. Only two of my apps were no longer compatible with 3.1.3, and I was able to find a free replacement for one of those, and the other isn't a big deal, as I can look at its content on a website.

Sorry to hear you're having problems with iOS 4.1. I installed iOS 4.1 on my iPhone and it's working great! No iBrick here! Hope you figure out your problem soon.

I have to concur, my unit is so slow now reading SMS, mail, ect. I basically select the function and set down the phone and walk away while I wait for the phone to access the apps. In comparision my ipad dominates the iphone in all operations. I feel like others that my iphone service and operations of the 3G phone are subpar and not what I expect from Apple.

I found this post through the ABC news article. I specifically upgraded early to the iPhone 4 BECAUSE of the iPhone 3G problems and so did most of my friends and co-workers. Although better, the iPhone 3G is still nowhere near as fast as it used to be with OS 3.x.

I have wasted way too much personal time synchronizing, deleting, restoring, removing and reinstalling apps. I have given up on fixing the iPhone 3G. I bought an iPhone 4 under early contract extension, and will set the 3G on ebay as soon as the 2-year forced contract wait is over so that I can finally unlock it.

In the end I still feel that Apple: 1. was negligent to release the update to iOS4 for iPhone 3G/3GS models when and how it did, 2. Delayed the iOS4.1 "fixes" until initial iPhone 4 sales had peaked, and 3. continues to restrict resources to correct this problem. Where is OS4.1.x? When will the full speed for iPhone 3G/3GS devices be restored?

Although the iPhone 4 is actually worth the upgrade costs and a fantastic device, this problem needs the attention of regulators and subject matter experts.

That was my experience too -- for about two weeks, then it got slower and slower. Now it is as bad or worse than the 4.0 bad times.

After months and months of a slow 3G phone thanks to OS4, I have decided that I will not be getting another iPhone. I'm not happy with Apple's way of handling their upgrades to the phone, nor am I happy with the phone itself anymore. I will be moving to an Android phone when it's time for me to upgrade. I miss having a phone that allows me to expand its storage memory and to save my personal photos and files on a memory card. And it is frustrating not to have basics that all other smartphones seem to have. In a few months, it'll bye bye Apple. I can hardly wait.
