Q: Iphone 3G slow after update to IOS4

The upgrade to IOS4 took forever but eventualy was completed succesfully.
But the iphone is very slow with IOS4. It doesn't work as smooth as it used to be. Also new applications such as the iBook application are very slow, doesn't respond smooth on screentaps etc. Who has the same experience?
I'm thinking about going back to version 3.1.3 because IOS4 doesn't add anything to improve the user experience on the iPhone 3G.

I hope Apple will listen to their iphone users and will release an update soon for iOS4 which improves the performance on older iPhones.

More than 412.000 people read this topic. Big problem.

Please join the fb group created about this issue "How long will iPhone 3G stay slow with iOS 4.x ?"

iOS 4.2 should arrive in the next days. And i hope it will solve the problems with my 3G device. Or i will have to change my phone. And it won't be an Apple iPhone.

    Victor,

I've seen your message in some threads, but the group seems not to exist; maybe I'm doing something wrong, could you please be so kind to post the direct link?

    Thanks.

I agree with you. I was going to get the I-p4 before Apple disabled my phone. I was waiting to get some money. Now I got the money and ready to buy my phone. I am looking at the New blackberry 9800. Too bad Apple messed with my phone. I loved it. Now I can't stand the fact that I can not answer the phone or text fast enough. It's useless. Bye Apple I will never buy your products . This is the last post. I'm off to buy my new Blackberry. G

i have now an iphone 3g wherein i
    1. can not make calls, or if i answer the phone, the other side can not hear me.
    2. photos taken using the camera keeps on disppearing.
    3. it takes forever to upload pictures in iphoto coz the iphone is not recognized.
    4. language input is soooooo slowwwwwwwww
    5.apps keep on crashing.
    6. home button is unresponsive.
    7. battery last 3 hours without even using it.
IN SHORT, I GOT ME A NOT-SO-SMART-PHONE TOY.
PLS RELEASE A SEPARATE UPDATE FOR 3G. WE DONT CARE ABOUT THOSE FANCY FOLDERS ETC AS LONG AS WE CAN STILL USE THE PHONE.

i feel your pain man, but apple is not the type of company to help users of older devices. i mean, look at the 2g iphones, identical performance specs besides the 3g, yet we dont get an update for it? its ******* me off too that apple doesnt do anything to help us, but theres almost nothing that they will do, theyll probably just tell us to buy the new iphone. so, i wouldnt hold your breath for a separate update. as steve jobs would probably say, "just buy the new one. its better."

bubbleman - re my 3G (which turned into a brick after updating to IOS4)
    1. It was hardly an "older device". Apple sold it to me less than a year before this happened.
    2. I'm not complaining that they won't upgrade or give an update for this device as you seem to be WRT your 2G. I'm complaining that it was working fine but an update they did give STOPPED it from working as it used to. I didn't want or hope for any improvement in my 3G as I was happy with what it did. I was unhappy that it STOPPED working!
To use a parallel - if I took my car into a garage for a service I can't expect it to suddenly compete with the latest model for speed or gadgets when it comes out. But I would moan if when it came out it could only do 10mph suddenly!! And the age of the car has nothing to do with it!

I guess I might as well support this thread as I am in the same boat and I am just surprised at how many are on board. It just goes to tell not everybody can think of just dumping their old devices and hopping on to new ones as they become announced.

If this keeps up, in a couple of years time you will see those who were on iPhone 4 creating a similar thread complaining how the future iOS6 is slow on their device.

    Dear Apple,

I really don't want to look elsewhere for my next phone purchase (at the moment Androids are really tempting), but I simply can't justify getting a new iPhone every year just so I can have a device performing at normal speed or better.

I am curious, do Android users have this sort of problem? Their updates are OVA and pushed by their Carriers or Phone Manufacturers and they will only receive them if their device is supported. Sure it is not as timely as iOS, but at least they are not forced to update/upgrade their devices and softwares.

    you can't expect much

ios4 and beyond are meant for iphone 3GS and iphone 4

iphone 2G and 3G both have 128MB of RAM and 400mhz cpus but the 3GS has double the RAM at 256MB and has a faster cpu at 600mhz and the iphone 4 is even higher at 512MB of RAM and a 1Ghz cpu

its all those differences that cause ios4 to run slowly on iphone 2G/3GS

so theres no firmware update that can make it run better, your only choice is to deal with the slowness or update to a 3GS/4

If, as you say, IOS4 and beyond are meant for the 3GS and Iphone 4, what I expect is that Apple do NOT put it out as a normal update for 3G phones. Simple.
And, if they do mess up by putting it out for 3G phones, I expect them to provide a legal and supported method of UNdoing it.

That seems a reasonable expectation to me - but one Apple have spectacularly failed to meet!

oh, and did I mention that since IOS4 my 3G won't even work as a simple alarm any longer? Since UK changed its clocks, the alarm on the 3G has been going off one hour later than it should.

Then why did Apple deploy it on the 3G?

The one choice you left out, and a very significant one, is for Apple to give us the option of going back to 3.1x

Wow 3G users had never heard any of that. That's so enlightening. Thanks so much for sharing.

Why did this guy spend all that time in Safari? I'd like to see how 4.2 acts with someone really using the phone and whether the memory still frags.
