Q: Iphone 3G slow after update to IOS4

I hear yalls pain!!!! I took mine to Apple today and they said it caused corrupt files. They did something to it and now its back to normal with the 4.0! It was soooooo slow I hated it and caused me to curse out Apple daily. However problem had been corrected!

Quite honestly, this is just typical Apple 2010. I have had issues with MacBooks, a Mac Air and now my iPhone when things degrade or stop after updates. I no longer update my Mac Air just in case! I also have an iPad and await with baited breath the next software update to see what breaks on that. Obviously I have always liked Apple products, but I am becoming bored with the problems.
In the past, there have been patches and workarounds, but Apple are becoming worse at publicising these. They are starting to hide behind denying any issues and are looking more like their parody on the Simpsons as each day passes.
Bring on Android and Wepad etc to introduce a bit of choice!

Now 24 hours after iOS4 update, running 8 web pages, under heavy usage battery life remained consistent with 3.1.3, standby time is usual.

I am experiencing no slow downs that a lot of people in this thread speak of.

Are you all completely wiping your iPhones and updating? A problem with mine forced me to wipe mine, no back up, started fresh.

I did mine on a fresh install of W7, fresh install of 9.2 iTunes, and fresh iPhone software upgrade using USB 1.1.

This all seems to be pointing towards a corruption issue.

Thanks for the update on the web page experiment. I'm happy to learn that your 3G has found a happy place. Perhaps I'll try yet another clean restore and update, including a fresh install of iTunes (I han't tried that yet).

be careful,

first install iOS4 my Sounds are gone completely (but no slowdown).
After first restore sounds are for a few seconds back, but gone quick...

After a complete eraese and restore nothings works anymore - nothing!!!!!!
iPhone is mostly black... no keys work, nothings - dead!
after half an hour I can start it again (looks like all will work, no settings are done, it loaded all mails)
But I can't stop mail by pushing the home-button, can't do anything.
Made a hard reset, it goes black and there it is now since one hour and nothing could make it awake!

I had the same issue went to settings reset, reset all settings voila probably better then before 4.0 update very speedy for 3g. Small and I mean small compared to how much better it is you have to renter some passwords no big deal.

Probelms here too: my 3G has been totally bogged down since installing iOS 4. Apps take 2 or 3 times to load without crashing, and twice the phone has simply rebooted itself spontaneously. There doesn’t seem to be enough RAM to do simple things like play the iPod while playing a word game—things that used to be OK. Apple should not have released iOS 4 for this device. The device simply cannot handle it reliably.

Wiping and restoring MIGHT help, maybe, but it’s an unacceptable experiment: it’s a 10-11 hour process (I have 14GB of data) and the iPhone restore procedure has never been reliable. So you might lose everything (I did once before). Waiting 11 hours with no phone is unacceptable since I’m a freelancer, but waiting 11 hours for a restore that MIGHT help, or MIGHT wipe out all my data, is even more out of the question.

I like the folders. But I liked it even more when I actually had enough memory to run apps....

try this.
hold power button and home button at the same time until phone reboots. ignore the power off prompt with slide bar and keep holding. let phone start up normally. then repeat this process again. after that iphone 4.0 on 3g was performing normally and even seems faster. it worked for me and hopefully it will work for you.

Hey, Goofy69, THANK YOU! My 3G had been S L O W and Google maps was useless after I "upgraded" to iOS4. Then, I tried your suggestion. It worked!!! Yippee! Everything is back to normal, plus I have folders, too!

It was an easy and fast fix, compared to restoring again!

Yep, just tried it here and, on a quick check of a few apps etc, normality seems to've been returned - fingers crossed it'll last ...

BTW, when we looked in the iTunes folder on our host laptop, for iPhone OS backups, the only one we found there was for iOS4, so presumably previous ones are overwritten ... (?)

since the last Firmware-Update a few days ago there is no possibility to go back to 3.1.3!
iTunes is phoning home, to check, what Firmware you have.
Now there is no chance to Downgrade anymore.
I just tried it yesterday. (There are some instructions to downgrade, links to them were posted here...)
But it is no more possible after this Firmware-Update.
Apple has wiped out all older versions.

My Model (3GS) is still without sound after a few seconds...

The iOS 4 installer moved the 3.1.3 OS software package into your Trash. If you haven't emptied it, the file may still be there:
iPhone1,23.1.3_7E18Restore.ipsw

If you can't find it, you can download it from various places, as per the recipes for downgrading to 3.1.3 that have been published here in previous postings.

The old V3 backups that iTunes made of your iPhone data (your settings, your prefs, your data...) may well be gone, unless you've been backing your system up regularly. I found mine in my Time Machine backups:
~/Application Support/MobileSync/Backups

I found the 3G about useless after the upgrade. I restored as a NEW PHONE.
This has made the system much more stable.
It is still a bit laggy but this is to be expected with the older hardware.
Realize the pace of development in this industry is much faster than what we as consumers would think.
Apple has never been one to support major system advances back many generations.
We as consumers have to make the correct choice. Apple should have been a bit more upfront about the performance hit the 3G would take installing iOS4.
The fact that on the Keynote they replaced it with the 3GS says something. Its done in their eyes. We say what!!, We just bought it a couple of years ago!! So very true but this is a consequence of the development pace. We just need to be carful if we are choosing not to keep up with the leading edge.

I like iOS4 on the 3G. I have to wait for a few things but it mostly works. I reboot ( home+power till the apple logo) each morning. Folders, spell check and the new email are great features.

So... Restore as a new phone. You will have to re set up all your apps and media. Network passwords ect. Just jot all that down before you do the restore. This will make your phone usable again. I will never be an iPhone 4 or a 3GS. But it is pretty cool still.

Same problem here. i hope apple alow a downgrade until they figure it out what is the problem on the upgrade of the 3G iphone.

But this updgrade was definitly not proof in the 3G iphone.

Oherwise they could not put this upgrade on the streets.
